Summer Lovin'...

Ah, the signposts of summer: The CWS ends. The July 4th festivities fire up. And and oily Ben Nelson is hauled out of the Gulf.

(record scratching sound)

See it here.

Well, that's what the SEIU and their brethren want you to see.

SEIU, the Sierra Club and various other left wingers have enacted another of their cutesy "Big Oil!" ads. This time they play off of the oil spill by blaming Nelson -- and using the exact same ad against Mike Johanns and various others -- for voting on an EPA bill completely unrelated to the spill.

Well, you know the Bill Clinton motto: "Never let a crisis go to waste!" You see, Nelson and Johanns accepted money from oil companies. And they voted to stop unelected EPA administrators from running amuck on "greenhouse gas" emissions.

So of course they're to blame for the oil spill. It's pretty simple, really. Math, and all that.

Anywho, we will be curious to see how many times this spot actually hits the air in Nebraska.

Oh, and note that Nelson is supported by "Bil Oil".

(Didn't Bil make a pledge to the Lakers campaign?)

***

Here is a nice new spot released by the Congressman Adrian Smith campaign that will air across the Third District.

Makes me want apple pie.

***

Congressman Lee Terry's campaign has this flyer being mailed and passed out and around.

Note the $2 Trillion reference to Tom White.

Don't worry White campaign. That's probably the last you'll hear that referenced... Maybe. Possibly.

***

Did you catch admission from Markos Moutlitsas of Daily Kos that their pollster, Research 2000, has likely been faking their polling for quite some time now?

Kos references Research 2000 quite often, and even based an entire book, calling Republicans "just like radical Jihadists", on a bogus Research 2000 survey.

We noted a poll they did back in 2008 on the Terry - Esch NE-2 campaign, a month before the election.

They had Terry up 10 points, 49% - 39% with 10% undecided.
The final numbers were 52.2% - 47.8%.

And the same date R2K said McCain 53% - Obama 40%, in NE-2.
Finals were, Obama 50% - McCain 49%.

Real polling results on that one?  Maybe.

***

Have a great 4th everyone, and per usual, we invite all the Nebraska office holders and candidates to send us their parade pics to post later!

We will also probably do as we have in the past and give "awards" for "Best Overall Entry", "Most Grueling Schedule", "Largest Float Presence" (volunteers in it) and "Most Creative Float".

Looking forward to your pics!

Summer is so slow when it comes to political news. Isn't there another lawmaker who isn't paying taxes on his speedboat. C'mon Sweeper ... you're the Drudge of NE politics.

Macdaddy said...

Thanks for the new post, Sweeper. I'll try to stay on topic this time.

OK, I loved the first ad even though I disagree with their position. I thought it was absolutely hilarious. Very clever despite the typo. Is the new strategy for Nelson to be attacked from the Left to make him look conservative?

I loved Adrian Smith's ad as well. Superbly done and one that will probably get sent along the bitter clingers' email circuit.

Terry's ad is also excellent. Lots of positive stuff along with just a little bit of mud-slinging, but nothing personal. White's absence allows Terry to do that. If you aren't out there making your case and letting people know who you are, your opponent will do it for you. Guess waiting until after July 4th wasn't such a great idea. But seriously, doesn't White realize that he has an uphill battle? Doesn't he want to be a Congressman? So far, he hasn't acted like he wants the job.

I agree with Macdaddy on Tom White. I remember chatting with Tom Becka as a newcomer to Nebraska. He told me that he wasn't a huge Terry fan (though conceding he'd win in 2008) and that Jim Esch was an excellent campaigner. From what I've heard, his 2006 was an excellent example of a grassroots effort. Where's this kind of campaign spirit from White? If he wants to win, he HAS to get out and make his name known.

Anonymous said...

If Lee Terry is for "independent minded" voters then I've got some prestine shoreline on the Gulf.

Smith's ad makes me want to ralph my apple pie in its neglect to include the many horridly wounded and the flag draped caskets. We're so busy feeling good we forgot the forgotten.

The ending shot of Smith is the same ole stuff that's been seen every campaign cycle since man left the cave. Whoopie.
Go Adrian. How original.

Levi said...

Not sure if Lee should go with "People before politics, always!" I think that gives White an huge opening to list all of the cases when that has not been true. A response like "you lie" comes to mind, but that's a bit out of bounds in civil discourse.

One example - Voting against insurance coverage for children with pre existing conditions - how is that people before politics. Now White has proven less than agile in his campaign so far, so guess we will have to wait and see.

As long as Ian Russell is running Tom White's campaign, it is doomed to failure. The only winner from that will be Ian, as he lines his own pockets with all of Tom's campaign funds. He was, after all, an astute follower of Barry Rubin - he of the Kathleen Townsend Kennedy's 2002 gubernatorial race fiasco and overseer of the NDP's most troubling years. Does anyone suppose that Ian will be able to convince Nebraska's Democrats to fork over all of what little money they have to him again?

To Anonymous 12:23 PM - White has to wait until the last minute to get himself out in public because they really won't like what they will see!

1:10--I saw White's campaign lit piece that states he is "bipartisan". Says who--if you did a confidential survey of NE legislators and asked which are the least partisan, White wouldn't be on that list.

Terry, meanwhile, is on the "least partisan" list of Members of Congress in The Hill newspaper's survey of Dems and Repubs.

12:55--easy choice for seniors.

Terry voted against ObamaCare, which contains $500 bil. in cuts to Medicare.

White supports the Medicare cut and every sr.'s gonna know it soon.

We heard on hear a couple weeks ago that White was polling - a push poll at that.

But yet, not results. Where are the results Ian?? That bad??

4:00 PM, June 30, 2010

That "Little Girl" out in the Third is cute, just like Adrian, in a school marm sort of way. She's pro-life, just like Adrian. She's fiscally conservative, just like Adrian. She's a Christian, perhaps even more so than Adrian (she's a Chaplain). She's a lifelong Nebaskan, just like Adrian.

So, why should anyone vote for her? She isn't owned by Club for Growth like Adrian. She can represent us twice without costing us an arm and a leg. If Adrian is re-elected one more time, he gets a PENSION FOR LIFE, which will cost us all a ton of money. She won't.

And, she has nothing to hide.

That's the issue in the NE2 race--and Whiite couldn't be in a worse position on it.

Cute? See where "cute" got the Kleebs. She is even using the same old "worn our car touring the district story" as ol' Speedracer. She's just another bleeding lib "progressive" pretending to be a conservative in a district fed up with "progressives"...you know...like former Senator Nelson. Be and say anything to get elected.

Wake up and smell the roses...or coffee...whatever it is that spins your dynamic. Put this in you book...Smith will win by 17 percent or more in November.

Gino said...

Anon @4:21-

You've got to be kidding me. You are right, that "Little Girl" has nothing to hide. That is because she has NOTHING! She is just another liberal self-righteous Ivy League grad running who thinks she is qualified to be a member of Congress(sound familiar?). So she's had some neat interships and gone on a few cool vacations. Doesn't impress me. Some advice to her: go out, get a real job, pay some taxes, maybe get married and raise a family, and check back with us in about 15 years.

Congratulations to Adrian Smith for earning his pension!

I have to disagree with you. The little girl will be lucky to crack 30% of the vote.

One Out In The Third,

While I agree with much of what you say about the Little Girl, I have to ask --- seriously, can't the Republicans do any better than Adrain Smith? He's the best you've got? I don't see where the Democrats' lineup is any better than the Republicans' --- nor any worse.

Anonymous said...

If she's a "little girl" then Adrian isn't exactly studly dudely in my opinion.

Since when did what you drive and looks make a candidate someone to elect?

One Out In The Third said...

Anon...

I don't believe he is the best we have...I know lots of private citizens that have the leadership skills and experience that could do better. The problem is they don't want the job. Smith has issues I won't deny that...he has missed nearly a third of the votes and of late he has shown to be more of a follower than a leader...a tendency not representative of a "career politician." Of course I believe Congress legislates too much so maybe he recognizes he is doing us a favor. He does listen to his constituents and reaches out to them.

At this stage of the game I don't think either party has the courage...desire or answers to do what is best for America. As a nation we have dug ourselves into a very deep hole and frankly I don't know if we can dig ourselves out. I also believe the majority of politicans are deep into the pockets of moneyed special interests. Ego plays a large part too.

Despite Smith's foibles...he stands at the top of the heap when considering past and present alternatives.

I can understand the GOP not wanting to inherit their own mess in 2008 and have the Democrats try to clean it up, but the voters had more say in that outcome than any deliberate effort by the GOP to lose.

The same cannot be said for the ensuing two years however and although one would think they'd have an appetite for retaking control, their own acts and omissions lead one to think that they just don't want to do any work to win.

While opposition to the party in power is to be expected it seems that the Republicans obsession with undermining president Obama has become such that they think that they can prevail without having offered anything of merit that benefits the American people. While party fealty is par for the course, the voters that elected them expect something more in return than mere party unity. It is quite clear that the GOP has failed to deliver.

When voters go to the polls, except for the ever shrinking minority that blindly vote Republican, most will ask themselves "what have you done for me lately?" The answer is clear when considering the GOPs track record of late and that is simply nothing

Anonymous said...

Um....Palin is a Republican.

Need I say more?

(OK. Bachmann and Angle are too.)

Anonymous said...

6:00 pm--here's what the Repubs have done for you lately--tried to stop the failed stimulus program and an absurd healthcare law--if they had prevailed we wouldn't be spending $2 trillion that we don't have.

btw--did you hear that only 14,000 jobs were created this month nationally? Have fun defending that incompetence...

Anonymous said...

It really is pretty simple.

If you like how things are and the direction we're going, vote for for White.

If you want change and a new direction, vote for Terry.

Any questions?

Anonymous said...

I remember the change and new direction of people like Terry. They took a budget surplus and gave it to the top 2% of the rich in America . Then for the first time in history America attacked another Nation(Iraq) While our real enemy hid in Afghanistan. Then they gave permits to oil companies like BP with out checking if they could clean up a mess like they said they could do. So if voting for Lee Terry brings back those days. I have to vote for White. Did any one really think that just in two years Obama could clean up a 8 year GOP mess . Obma and the democrats are doing an OK job so far. They need time to get things done. I am confident they will do.

Ignorant...

That's the 6:20 post. If you're talking the 01 and 03 tax cuts, everyone got a tax cut because all brackets were reduced. Everyone. Most of the investment cuts translated into billions for new capital (i.e. job creation--something you Dems don't know much about.)

btw--you want to let the 01 and 03 tax cuts expire? Great time to raise taxes by $1 trillion.

Obama knows he's in deep trouble now--unemployment probably hits 10%--that's why he's attacking.

The Dem program--saddle us with $9 trilion more in debt this decade. That's one reason people will vote Republican this Nov.

Any questions?

Anonymous said...

If the Dems are against the Iraq war, why didn't they stop it when they took control of Congress in 07? they could have cut off funding--but never did--talk is cheap 6:20. Obama said we'd be out of there in May 2010--what happened?

Anonymous said...

White supports the stimulus program. Some stimulus--only 14,000 jobs created everywhere in the country in June. The $800 bil ($1 tril. w/interest) = total waste.

Can Prof. Carter show this failure in another video, please?

6:20pm anon...
We won't be able to forget the change and new direction of people like Obama and White.

Obama took deficits of $250 Billion and turned them into $1.5 trillion deficits.

Then began turning his back on our closest allies.

Then proceeded to do ABSOLUTELY nothing while 100,000 barrels of oil spills into the gulf.

You can bet that that many are looking back at the Bush years and realizing that we can't afford White and Obama.
I have to vote for Terry!

Ditching Lakers....

Can't blame 'em.

Anonymous said...

Ditching Lakers?

Well, I'm a Democrat and if my party wants to give him the boot, I'm for it. I just hope they have someone to replace him with, and not another Republican like they tried to give us with Kate Witek in 2006.

Lee Terry has taken $30,000 from Big Oil and gas just this year, including a $1000 check from BP just this March. Nebraska has the potential to be the Saudi Arabia of wind energy but Lee Terry is taking money from the oil companies to sell out Nebraska's interest and fight renewable energy tooth and nail. Meanwhile across the Missouri River Iowa has more than you can count and less wind natural resources.

Does anyone really trust Lee Terry to stand up to BP and the biggest polluters in the country and help promote clean energy? Anyone?

You heard it here folks....Republicans think that being a hospital chaplin and ministering to people when they're at their greatest time of need isn't a "real job". I'm sure Jesus would approve. At least Davis refuses to take any special interest money, while Adrian would never survive without it. Of course, we're talking about a guy who greatest acheivement so far has been to congratulate the UNL volleyball team. He's one of the least active members of Congress and wouldn't know what to do if John Boehner and Eric Cantor weren't giving him directions on what to say and do. I'd rather have someone with ethics and a real religious center, than a fake without a brain. What has he done for the 3rd anyway?

And I'd also like to know all about his stance on DADT, given that......

You depict Lee Terry as I remember him while he "served" folks on the Omaha City Council. He was all for riverfront development, claiming it would bring in untold revenue to the city's coffers. But he was ignoring the raw sewage flowing into basements there during heavy rainstorms. I guess he was planning on using that new revenue for the sewer project! No? Omahans haven't gotten the sewers separated yet? All these years later with all that new revenue? Humph! Must be a "Republican" kind of thing (and Democrats have been no better).

Lee Terry is like Nebraska Right to Life. What he fails to accomplish betrays what he says he believes...

Yeah, isn't it funny that so many people are still struggling? What a riot!

Are you Republicans sick, or what? This is not a joke, not to millions of people who are terrified of how they are going to keep a roof over their kids heads.

But you got right ahead and spin the facts. Ignore the very real obstruction being implemented by the republicans. The very people that created this recession. Why do you defend those that made this mess and laugh at those who are trying to clean it up.

Do you go and point and laugh at the people trying to clean up the gulf after your pals at BP destroyed it?

Who will get Ms. Davis' vote for Speaker of the House? Who? Oh, yeah, that's right. Nancy Pelosi. It doesn't matter what positions she drops into a website, even if she believes them. Heck, she could even have won a Nobel Prize. She has an impossible battle with the Pelosi millstone around her neck.

A Democrat thinks "How can I steal more money from someone who works hard for it so I can take my piece off the top and then give this beggar the leftovers all the while getting his vote for life."

Okay, Macdaddy, you know very well that there are only 58 Democrats in the Senate since Byrd's death (really 57 considering Nelson's votes most of the time). Since the Republicans have fallen in love with the filibuster, and have threatened committee chairs if they don't vote with the party leadership, how do you expect Democrats to get anything done? Republicans don't care about this country, they just want to be in power.

Macdaddy said...

The Dems will soon have 59 Senators when the Democrat governor of West Virginia appoints another Democrat to the spot. No word on whether that governor is busy horse-trading with Obama over it. Of course, they had over a year with 60 Senators and got lots done: porkulus and obamacare. I'm sure they could have goten more done, but that's their own fault. Unfortunately, those peons, the people of Massachusetts were such ingrates that they elected Scott Brown. So now, they have 2 choices, both of which they are loathe to do but both of which are easily doable: A) call the Republicans bluff and let them filibuster. B) Actually talk to a few Republicans and find out what would get them on board. They only need to peel one off. The fact that they can't should give them pause enough to ask themselves this question: "We can't get Olympia Snow, Susan Collins, Scott Brown, or Lindsey Graham to go along with our plans, so do our plans really suck that bad?" Instead, we have the entire Democrat leadership throwing one insult after another at the Republicans. That's not called leadership. That's called posting on LS.

TedK said...

If Democrats blindly followed their leader as much as Republicans do, then 60 votes would be enough to get anything done. However we have too many faux-Dems that want that corporate money. And with getting any R support, it's constantly a moving target. Everytime the Dems give concessions, the Repubs come back wanting more. If you don't see this, then you're living in some alternate universe.

Anonymous said...

BTW, what chairmanships do the Republicans have to blackmail with? It is done by vote, not appointment.
