In our final 4th of July Parade Award of the day, we give Best Overall Entry.
This pretty much comes down to two (that we have pics for).
The Mike Johanns for Senate campaign, which was at three different parade stops and concluded the weekend with Mike driving a tractor in the West Point parade on the 5th. That's a lot of organization and volunteers.
But we give our final parade props to the Jim Esch for Congress campaign for their appearances at JE George and Ralston.
They had a great number of volunteers and a good entry with the addition of a Statue of Liberty float. While we deduct points from the campaign's dopey decision to spend six grand to pass out bottles of water (why not just dollar bills next time?), the volunteer presence and the extra effort (if not expense), made it a nice and effective parade entry.
Thanks to everyone who provided photos, and if you have others, we may do another post of pics in the near future.

How many of those volnteers had the last name Esch? The ones sans the Esch name had to have been Jimmy's drinking buddies and/or high school and college buddies. I doubt any of them were there because they were inspired by Jim, unless they were underage and promised beer at the end of the parade.
So let me get this straight. Kleeb gets ridiculed because he is a so called-rancher and then there is Mike Johanns who pretends he can drive a tractor and spent the last couple of years in Washington DC working for the worst administration in modern history and not finishing a job is somehow the more genuine candidate? Funny indeed.
Uh, Mike Johans grew up on a dairy farm. He didn't play cowboy during summer vacations.
Oh yes? When was the last time he was working on the dairy farm? Did he spend a bunch of time driving tractors in DC? Or when he was practicing law? Did he practice tractor law?
Well, you make a good point.
Mike Johanns HAS been employed, and held a job.
He has represented the people of Lincoln, the state of Nebraska, and worked in the federal government. And he has worked as a lawyer. And he grew up on a dairy farm.
Let's hear you rattle off your boy Scott's resume again.
(Oh wait, I'm sorry, "Hope! Change!")
Let's see Johanns grew up on a farm and was Secretary of Agriculture. Hardly surprising he knows how to drive a tractor. On the other hand, Kleeb is apparently unable to even drive a car...legally.
BTW, the worse administration in modern history was Jimmy Carter.
Wow, I didn't see employment as a prerequisite for the oath of office.... Could you point me to that in the Nebraska Constitution or the U.S. Constitution?
Yes, he worked for the City of Lincoln, and left prematurely, for another job. He then worked for the state of Nebraska, and then left for another job. He then worked for the United States, and then left before another job.... I see a pattern developing....
Omasteak, if you could back up the numbers of Carters presidency and how long they were in the tank, compared to President Bush's poll numbers, I might believe you.
still waiting on the polling numbers.......
Anon @ 6:01:
How about the poll on election day in 1980?
Anon...I don't need poll numbers for correct historical assessment of complete failure of Jimmy Carter as President. All you have to know is...Iran + hostages + Carter failure to take decisive action = embolden Iran who is now largest state sponsor of terrorism and working furiously to develop nuclear weapons. BTW, Dem congress approval ratings are even lower than President Bush's and lowest ever for Congress thanks to San Fran Nan and Dismal Harry.
omasteak has revisionist history. Carter authorized a military mission to rescue the hostages, but ended tragically when the soldiers were killed (8 of them I believe). But Warren Christoper was able to work out the Algiers Accord and the hostages were released the same day Reagan took the oath of office. That's right, all the work was done under Carter.
As for the low polling numbers, those same polls you quote also show that, when asked, the people being polled say they'd rather have Democrats in control of the Congress rather than Republicans. And just keep in mind that the Republicans Senators right now (the "up or down vote" crowd) have filibustered more in the 110th than any other Congress in the history of the US. How can you get things done when Republicans are obstructing?
SS....Scott Kleeb's resume:
PHD in History from Yale, with a focus on American Cattle Ranching.
Professor @ Hastings College for a year before his run.
Worked at McGinn Ranch throughout college, FT for 1 1/2 years (starting around 1997) before going to Yale, still working in the summers and other time back (like any college student).
Currently working for Morgan Ranch.
World Fellow, represented Ethanol nationally, and has finished every job he started.
Mike Johanns: quit every job and accomplished the degrading of the mental health system in the state (Beatrice is directly the result of his actions). Quit before the Farm bill was done (told Bush to veto it). Closed all those FSA offices that will bite him in the butt (a lot of farmers angered at him about that, and it was his choice, he could have delayed until a new farm bill was done and the impact determined.)
Anon @9:40:
IS that the best you got against Johanns? The tired "quit every job" nonsense? It is no wonder young Scott is 30 points behind in the polls. Keep that line of attack up, it surely will not resonate with voters more than the fact that you boy has not had a real job in his life (you really use the title "professor" loosely) and now thinks he is fit to be a U.S. Senator. Sorry, but the Senate is not an entry-level job.
Anon...
Carter is by far one of the worst Presidents...not just in recent history...but ever. You talk about revisionist history. Carter's rescue mission was a total failure before it started. The planning for that mission must have been drawn out the night before on a Whitehouse napkin. Carter was trying to save face...that's all.
I spent enough time in the Marine Corps during the Carter years to know the helicopters were not fitted for desert operations...and that the equipment was available. You can go back and review the photos of the crash scene and see the engines weren't shielded for desert storms.
And now you "suckers" are hooked on on the likes of Obama and Kleeb. Deja vu all over again.
Let's look at the Johanns history:
Lived and worked on a dairy farm: For you non ag types, you wake up at 4 am and Milk and feed the Cows and all the kids do this work.
Mike was a successful Trial attorney
Mike finished his term as County Commissioner and was promoted by his constituants (oh yes, the President and the Senate promoted him too) every time he ran for higher office. (with current poll numbers I will include the senate seat as a win as well)
So please keep the quitter line going...You have been doing this for 6 months now and Mike's lead gets bigger and bigger
Can I ask a question?
Of the people walking with Jim Esch in the parade, how many of them have sent him a check?
I wonder if they will still do so once they learn that he (Esch) paid himself $8,000 as a 'loan repayment' in June.
Since July 1, how much additional money has Jim paid himself from campaign coffers?
Hey Ink, why is Lee Terry still lying to his constituents that the Chinese are hiring Cubans to drill off our coasts?
And what about all those meals that Lee eats at the Capitol Hill Club that he gets reimbursed for?
To anonymous: Those meals at the Capital Hill Club are quite delicious, much better than the burgers at the Bluejay. I see Lee eating there for sometime to come.
Oh, I've eaten at the Capitol Hill Club plenty. They do have pretty good food. I'm just wondering why Lee always has his campaign reimburse him for all his meals there?
Probably for the same reason that Esch's campaign pays for Jim's meals at Louie M's Burger Lust.
Hey Pol Observer,
Is that your own poll taken from the Johann's parade walkers?
A failed military mission should be blames on the generals, not the commander in chief. The mission was poorly planned and executed, Carter wasn't involved in that was he? His job is to order a plan to ben drawn up and then give the final approval. This is evidently a shock to some but the President doesn't lead his army in the field like the days of King Richard and Saladdin
And while i am thinking about it, good job with the parade contest sweeper. Very creative and very well put together
To Dem Pol Observer: No your buddys at Daily Kos paid for a poll with Johanns 58%, Kleeb 31% If 27 points isn't statistically significant, call 4.0 UNL Student to do the math. Kleeb will never show up with a poll showing him within 10 points of Johanns!!! Never!!!
Pol observer:
Never say Never. Kleeb will ride the coattails of the Obama sweep. Guaranteed!!!!
Greeeeeeen Acres is the place for me. Farm living, Hospitality, blah blah blah. Help me out here.
I wish they wouldn't have put Johanns on the tractor. Why you might ask? Because after 2 years of being a Senator he is going to QUIT & going back to the job he really loves, Being a Dairy Farmer-getting up at 4:00 AM & doing what he knows best. Schucks, we really screwed up putting Johanns on the tractor.
Jim's 'Emergency Appeal':
Did everyone get Esch's latest email? They need to raise $10,000 by the end of the month.
My question is: how much of that will just go from a contributor's wallet back into Jim's wallet under the guise of 'loan repayments'?
PLEASE SEE THE KPTM INTERVIEW WITH ESCH: www.kptm.com
Interesting as to what issues he was asked about ...
Jim stated online on KPTM the he thinks Congressman Terry's energy plan is a great idea!!!! It is on the web and he can't deny it!!!!!!!!!!!
JIM ESCH ENDORSES LEE TERRY'S AMERICAN MADE ENERGY PLAN!!!!!
I saw the video. Esch thinks the Congressman's plan is the plan that America needs!
Lee should thank him for his support!
Did I hear that right? Esch likes hagel's stance on immigration and the war of terror?
I heard him say that Hagel's stance on the path way to Amnesty is the right plan!!! Lee should jump on that!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not to mention cutting and running in the war on terror.
Esch,
Why were you kicked off the Creighton Campus??? He didn't answer that one on KPTM!!!!
