Everything but a Dem candidate

A strange amount of political posturing during this hot July in an election year. But is it full of sound and fury, signifying nothing? Well...

First there’s Mike Meister of Scottsbluff, who would seem to be the current go-to guy for the Dems to have a candidate for Governor.

Meister said he is 98% committed to running for Governor.

But, ah, that last 2%.

It seems that Meister is not crazy about that little bugaboo of running for office: fundraising. It sounds like he essentially wants the state Democrat party to be his campaign fundraising arm.

How much he would be involved in actually dialing for dollars is unknown, but it would be an unusual partnership. Maybe not unworkable, but certainly not the usual relationship.

***

So what does the state Democrat party do in the mean time? Well, if you’re Chairman Vic Covalt, you send out a fundraising email!

From Covalt:
Unless you, as our dedicated Nebraska Democrats, send in contribution to support a Democratic campaign for Governor. Otherwise, Nebraska will have no choice except Dave Heineman....
It is time for every Nebraska Democrat to step up with a donation. Help us help you recruit and support a good candidate for Governor.
Now. Not later. Or it will be too late.
Awesome Vic! Because who wouldn’t want to send you a bunch of their hard-earned money for a completely unknown campaign, for an unknown candidate, to your tightly run organization. Sounds like money well-spent to us!

***

But who IS running the Nebraska Democrat party these days, anyway?

Heck, don’t ask them.

Is it Vic Covalt? One wouldn’t think the party elders are nuts about him right now.

How about Dem national committeeman Vince Powers? Is anyone consulting him on things?

Anne Boyle? Well, she successfully torpedoed the Mark Lakers campaign from within, essentially dooming the Dem’s Governor candidate without a “Plan B” anywhere in sight.

Ah, but then there’s that stealthy group out there, previously unknown, but now coming to light. We speak of “Bold Nebraska” (we know they are “bold” because it’s right there in the name).

Bold Nebraska has run some lame ads earlier in the year that no one remembers, and are responsible for the recent trackers/stalkers on behalf of Tom White against Congressman Lee Terry.

So who is running BN? Well, it’s a laundry-list of used-to-bees in the state Dems. If you’ve followed along, you know that “In the Neb!” Jane Fleming Kleeb is running the show. But the top name on their “Board of Directors”? Former Dem state chair Steve Achepohl.

You remember Steve. When asked last fall if he had anyone to run against Governor Dave Heineman, he responded, “I’m not God.”

So are there some bitter grapes from Achepohl after he was essentially rousted from the party? Does Vince Powers have any idea what is going on at the underground-party HQ? Who have the likes of the Boyles -- and Ben Nelson -- blessed to be really running the show for the group-that-answers-to-no-one?

Dunno. But that convention in a few weeks could possibly be a good show.

***

But that’s not the ONLY new Bold group out there! Because what’s the only thing that could be more-Bold than Bold Nebraska???

Why that would be “BOULDER NEBRASKA”!

Yes, we have been contacted by the new group, Boulder Nebraska, who describe themselves thusly:

Our motto is: "Sometimes being BOLD isn't enough, it's time to be BOULDER!!!!" We want to bring Boulder Colorado Values to Nebraska!!! We are not financed by some rich billionaire or tied to the Cult of Personality of one politico, we are Boulder!!!

They even have a Facebook page up which describes themselves as:
We are a group of liberal progressives trying to bring Boulder Colorado values to Nebraska.
They have numerous posts up already, and seem to be pretty progressive. And pretty bold. REALLY bold.

They seem to really be pressing for the Obama - Pelosi - Tom White agenda.

We are informed that they are not funded by George Soros.
(Not YET, anyway...)

**UPDATE 7/15/10**

We received this rather harsh statement from Boulder Nebraska, who asked us to post this here:

We at Boulder Nebraska have seen the mistatements Jane Kleeb has made about our group. We are not a part of any political party or under the direction or control of the Nebraska GOP. We are not funded by anybody and we are not a front for some out-state organization. We are also not an ASTROTURFER organization like BOLD NEBRASKA that will not reveal its funding sources and what it pays its mouthpiece Jane Kleeb. We thought transparancy in politics was a progressive virtue apparently for BOLD NEBRASKA that is not the case. Furthermore, we are not about promoting any individuals unlike BOLD NEBRASKA, we are about discussing Progressive issues with Nebraska voters. Trash us all you want Ms. Kleeb but the truth remains you are a paid political hack moving from gig to gig.

Sincerely
The non-paid organizers of Boulder Nebraska

***

Oh, and we almost forgot this little item that was sent to us the other day (by a country-club "tracker", ha!):

Tom White campaigning at the Field Club pool (with his man-bag over the arm).

Now that's some voter out-reach!

***

Then just to round things out around the the Third District, Congressman Adrian Smith and Democrat candidate Rebekah Davis seem to have a new opponent in their midst.

Dan Hill has said he is going to run as an Independent in this race.

Hill says that he used to be a Republican, but doesn’t like the party anymore. In any case he said he would have a nearly identical voting record to Smith.

Uh, so there ya go.

With that plan, why wouldn’t you blow a bunch of your own cash on yard signs and hotel ballroom rentals and gas money and fast food?

***

But just to show you that Mr. Hill there isn’t the only one getting ahead of himself, look no further than the 2013 campaign for the Mayor of Omaha!

(The what?)

That’s right, none other than Christopher Geary has already set up his Facebook campaign page for that office.

So here’s our plan: Instead of constantly having Geary and Mort Sullivan and Jerry Odom and maybe Pat Flynn and probably this Dan Hill constantly running for Mayor and Governor and Senator and President, why don’t we just have a separate primary for them?

Whoever wins gets to be the nominee from the “Perpetual Candidate Party”, and they can pool their resources and votes. Think how much more crowded their post-election parties would be! And you’d have just one website you would have to visit, or just one robo-call to receive.

Someone needs to get working on this, pronto.

***

And finally, KETV informs us that Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle will hit the Dundee Dell bar at 1AM on Thursday to celebrate the extension of closing time for Omaha bars to 2AM.

Because that is just the time bar-goers will give coherent, well thought-out suggestions to the Mayor. (Our over/under on the number of times the wobbly guy tells the Mayor that he’s “awesome”: 13.)  But where to park the Durango?

Just remember Mayor, you don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay there.

Okay, for those of us with short memories lets go over the years the republicans were in power 2001-2009

Skyrocketing gas prices.
More than 5,400 Americans killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
9/11.
Katrina.
Illegal Wiretapping of Innocent Americans.
Erosion of the Middle Class.
Our huge borrowing from Communist China.
Gitmo.

These are just the biggies (in no particular order).

Even if you're not a Democrat, you cannot be happy with the tremendous debt Cheney, Bush, Rove created.

Let's keep America from ever having "leadership" like that again

BTO tell us about the Phelps Co. Democratic Party Convention!!

I heard everyone had shown up in this park in Holdrege, including Rebekah Davis, and you were nowhere to be found. A couple of minutes after the meeting was supposed to start everyone spotted you and two friends hidden behind some trees in an unusual spot. When they approached you didn't you tell them that the meeting was over and you'd been re-elected? Then I heard they complained so you agreed to have a real election and you lost to Harriet Larson.

Skyrocketing gas prices.

Still high. Probably going higher.

More than 5,400 Americans killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

We won in Iraq. Their deaths were not in vain. We're losing Obama's war in Afghanistan. Casualty figures are higher every month, and for nothing.

9/11.

Obama's worrying about giving constitutional rights to the people who planned it.

Katrina.

BP

Illegal Wiretapping of Innocent Americans.

Name one.

Erosion of the Middle Class.

Back then, they had jobs.

Our huge borrowing from Communist China.

A lot huger in 2009. Huger still in 2010 . 2011? Do the math.

Gitmo.

Still open for business, long after teh O promised to close it.

Obama combines all of Bush's bad features with a few dozen vices of his own.

And that's why most Americans have no confidence in this stumbling, far left, ideological, incompetent presidency.

The monkey, curious, puts its hand into the pot, grasps the object inside but cannot remove its fist because its fist is grasping the object. You may then approach the screaming, panicked monkey because, for whatever strange reason, it refuses to let go of the object in the pot.

I see the Vice President said they wanted to make the stimlus package last year bigger. But to get GOP votes they had to make it smaller. Why is relief for the middle class always less than what the rich get? Why are the republicans so much in love with wall street?

Socialism for the rich is fine with republicans but the poor and middle class of this country are on their own.

Funny how Rethugs didn't think the TARP bailout was too big. And that only benefited the banksters.

"Power without Responsibility" That above statement describes the republican party so well. They don't have to do anything but say NO. NO, NO, NO. And they do. Know matter what Obama tries . They say NO!. Even when he waters down bills to get republican votes. They still say NO. Then when it passes they say repeal. The GOP has the good life. Now if they get back in charge, look out. Then it will be yes to tax cuts for the rich. Yes to Wall Street doing what ever they wish. Yes to prejudice against gay people. Yes to all of the old Republican games that never worked in the first place. Eventually the Middle class will not exist. It will be 2% rich. and 98% poor.

I'm amused to see you're continuing to defend the terrorist front organization al-Haramain, even as Obama himself uses membership of the organization as a reason to continue to detain people in Gitmo. If you google UN security council committee 1267, you'll find that the UN has designated it a terrorist organization, as has the US Treasury Department. Or you could google the counterterrorism blog for the dozens of proven instances where al-Haramain has financed terrorist activities worldwide.

It sickens me you would defend a group like this simply to bash the previous president. Typical leftist.

To the "so-called" Holdrege voter,

Evidently you received your information from Marion Bahensky, Rebekah Davis or Harriet Larson, since they were the only ones that showed up late, and they must not have looked too hard to find those of us that were there at the appointed time and place, which was announced per Nebraska statute, as an official publication in the Holdrege Daily Citizen. We were in plain sight, seated in one of only three shelters in the park, but please, don't let facts interfere with your fantasies.

Ms's Bahensky, Davis and Larson showed up about 45 minutes late. Did you expect special accommodations to be made for them, especially since only one of them was a registered Phelps County Democrat?

I was NOT re-elected, for the reason that I did NOT run. So, when Mrs. Larson showed up, she was told that if she wanted the job, she could have it. I wish her the best of luck and I have already given her a box full of materials to get her started, which was a hell of a lot more that I got when I took on the task four years ago. You're momma should spank your bare bottom for spreading such filthy lies. But then, you'd probably enjoy that!

And, Luke, shouldn't you just stick to trolling gay porn websites?

Anonymous said...

Oh, BTO, don't know about the other person, but I heard about your "convention" from someone who was there when you started your meeting. They say Rebekah set up at the closest shelter, but saw you at a shelter past hers. They went over there, not sure what was going on. You started your meeting, asked if anyone wanted to be chair, and when no one spoke up you said you'd do it again. But then the others that had been at the other shelter came over. When the people initialy present found out Harriet wanted to run for chair, they say they voted - you did NOT resign. You lost. Everyone was in the park on time, and you would have had to walk past Rebekah's sign just like they did. You tried to get away with something and you failed.

I hear you're going to run for an "NDP Office", and you sent an email to a few people about it. I thought you announced you were getting out of the party? I hope you do run. You'll see just how unwanted you are. No one will support someone who's made it their hobby trying to find every way possible to bring down a party.

Hey Anony 12:29,

The "everyone" you report consisted of the aforementioned Ms's Davis, Bahensky, and Larson ... no one else. The previous Phelps County Associate Chair, who was present, and I had already stepped down, and with no replacements volunteering, the positions were vacated, leaving Phelps County in the same situation so many other counties across our state find themselves in ... devoid of any real Democratic party leadership. Since Mrs. Larson showed up and agreed to take on the task, and not wishing to discourage volunteerism, we re-opened the proceedings and even I voter for her.

As for anyone "having" to walk past Rebekah's sign, dimwit, there are three entrances to Holdrege's North Park. Most residents of Holdrege enter from one of the two southern entrances, as did I and the others. Ms. Davis's entourage arrived from out of town and entered from the north, where they set up camp. I cannot be held responsible for their ineptitude. And, as A 12:46 pointed out, neither candidates nor CD3 Chairs have the authority to control the meetings of county Democratic organizations.

So please explain, if you weren't so busy molesting your neighbor's children, why weren't you at the convention, voicing your opinions and getting your facts straight?

Mike Pence GOP congressman believes that the rich should get tax breaks . But that the unemployed should not get any more benefits. He needs to check out the facts that are below to see who gets the most in America today. The Top1% &Corporations benefit MORE from Taxpayer funded programs than ANY OTHER GROUP.

1) Military -
56% of budget. Defending the country benefits everyone; but it benefits the rich more, because they have MORE PROPERTY to defend.

-Same principle as insurance: if you have a bigger house, you pay more to insure it.

2) Nation's infrastructure--
Federal roads & bridge, airports, port authority, Coast Guard: benefit interstate commerce and people who can travel, not ghetto dwellers. The MORE business you own the MORE YOU benefit from Nation's Infrastructure.

3) Energy is used disproportionately by the rich and industry; therefore, they should pay more in taxes.

4) Public education,
Better public schools are ones attended by the moderately well off. The very well off ship their offspring off to private schools; but it is their companies that benefit from a well-educated public. (If you don't think that's a benefit, go start up an engineering firm, or even a factory in a 3rd world country)

5) LARGE Corporate Subsidies:
Large US and Foreign Corporations receive MILLIONS of tax payer money in SUBSIDIES every year.

6) Large US & Foreign Corporations that make PROFITS pay ZERO in Federal Corporate Income Tax -- yet benefit the MOST from OUR tax money

7) Tax Cuts &Credits
Benefit the Top1% most. Their Adjusted Gross Income LOWERS to the point where they pay only 13% of a tax rate.

Nick,

One reason why Democrats are posting here on Leavenworth Street is that the NDP blog was silenced a long time ago. Points of view divergent from the official party mantra are no longer allowed on the NDP propaganda site. Another is that many Democrats got sick and tired of having to tolerate Kyle's rants anytime they posted a non-Nelson edifying comment on his "precious." And, last but not least, Sweeper has pointed out on more than one occasion that contributions from all sides of the political spectrum are welcome so long as they gravitate around "the talk of Nebraska politics."

If you prefer your NEGOP propaganda undiluted, you might find yourself more comfortable over on Pete Ricketts' "Nebraska Watchdog." Or, you may do as I have been invited to do by numerous cowardly anonymice, and start your own blog.

So is anyone looking ahead to what the R's are going to do here in Nebraska in the next session? The next election has a LOT at stake with redistricting and all.

If one follows the bouncing ball one can see with TW leaving the legislature there is a whole in the D's leadership. Who is going to fill the gap? Everybody knows the 2nd district was run by D's these past few years. With Ashford and Cornett being RINO's, White and Lathrop had their way.

Who will get White's spot on the Committee on Committee? And why is this important? I suppose the assignment of Senators to committee's would be of interest for one. Oh and the makeup of the redistricting committee, with particular interest in the 2nd district.

So who will take TW's spot? Nordquist, Cook, Counsil, Mello, or Howard? Or will the R's finally get an R on the committee? Who would thaat be? The contenders are Pahls, Lautenbaugh, Pirch, McCoy, and Price. Nebraskans ought to be watching this race. The impacts to the State are beyond imagination!

The balance of the standing committee's are at stake. Why with a change in the Business and Labor committee there could be a change in the CIR, then the union's would be diminished. A change in the makeup of the Judiciary and the Arizona Law makes it out of committe. The repercutions of White leaving and a change in the Committee on Committes' has such deep and last impacts on Nebraska.

Oh let alone what happens with redistricting...... moving portions of North Omaha into the 1st district thereby forever keeping the 2nd district in Republican control.

Just things to watch

Nope, I suspect lot's of Douglas County will end up in the 1st. Terry doesn't want Bellevue cut out, he would lose a LOT of support. Nope you can bet Lautenbaugh will be on the redistricting committee, and he will be sure to move enough of Douglas county out to the 1st. Heck he might even move himself out so he can run against Fortenberry.

Think about it, who is going to represent the 2nd district on the redistricting committee? Each district get's 3 members. Hmmmm will it be 2 from Douglas and 1 from Sarpy or will it be all Douglas county? The committee
breakdown is determined by adopted rules where there can only be 5 members of one party on the committee. So with 9 members, 3 per district what is the break down for the 2nd?

If the 3rd, dominated by R's, has 2R's and one D, then will the 1st have 2 D's and one R leaving the 2nd to have what? With 3 slots remaining and the 2nd with more R's than D's will it be 2 R's and 1 D? Which 2 R's Ashford and Cornett, the 2 RHINO's, and Lathrop or Mello as the D?

Or will the R's find some backbone and throw their weight around and put two other R's on the committee who aren't RINO"s, maybe Laughtenbaugh and Pahls? Or....

Will the 1st district put 2 R's on and thereby leave only 1 R for the 2nd, and which one RINO Ashford/Cornett or not?

This will impact the State of Nebraska for at least 10 years.

Oh and with redistricting which districts will be taken from the western part of the state and moved east? This would yield more power to Omaha and further push rual Nebraska to the back seat. However, perhaps there will be a bill this year to authorize the last senate seat, district 50! A fight between Omaha and the rest of the State would be something to watch.

Whew, so much in the balance and so few people even aware.

Who will fall on their sword for which cause. Which party can herd their cats best? The R's have a dominate lead, yet are filled with RINO's and Party devotee's. The D's are in the minority and yet are likely to vote lock step, but without their bully Tom White.

Political types ought to keep a keen eye out and an ear to the ground for this one.

Or tune into Fox, CNN, or Tod & Tyler for your daily soma. (if ya don't know it's too late)

I learned early if you don't dance the "Progressive" dance your dance card is revoked immediately...so much for being Progressive and open minded. If you don't dance the dance you are immediately deemed a racist or a Repuglican.

Nebraska and the U.S. is going to Hell in a Handbasket at breakneck speed and neither party is doing a thing to throw the binders.

Buy gold...poor investment...buy bullets. When we join the rest of our Third World friends we will need them.

In politics, you're never supposed to say "never". But, let me say, "Never, ever, never-- not in a million years-- no chance- NEVER!" I hope that's clear.

1/3rd,

I've got two left feet but I still can't do the "Progressive" dance the way Sen. Nelson and his minions expect me to. I guess I"m just too much of a Socialist for them. Funny, but Republicans used to be considered Liberals. What happened?

Nebraska is doing just fine. We could be doing better, much better, but compared to so many other places, even here in the U.S., we're doing OK. I still see the welfare farmers driving around in brand new Ford 350s, vacationing in Hawaii, buying season tickets for the Husker football games, enjoying ESPN on their 60" plasma screens and donating $$$ to the NEGOP. Life could be worse.

As for the bullets ... I think we all need to just reinvest in something we've all lost ... our senses of humor. I know I've been trying to find the one I seem to have lost once I got involved in politics, and it has been very elusive. I guess I'll have to go read Will Rogers' biography again and see if I can't get a clue where it went.

So Shoey's response to being called a liar for his false claim that Scott Brown had not voted on health care legislation is the same response that 5 year olds and Democrats everywhere use. "No, YOU'RE a liar". Sad, really. But let's take his delusional responses apart.

LIAR - can't becuase the info is classified.

But in fact, an al-Qaida front group did sue -- and was called by Shoey's soulmates right here on this thread 'innocent Americans'. This is why, kids, it's a good idea to read the whole thread before commenting. You'd hate to have been refuted by one of your own pals.

So how did a group that couldn't sue, because the information was classified, manage to sue, Shoey? Inquiring minds want to know.

Gas Prices: LIAR. Have never returned to the almost $5 gas we had as Bush's going away present to us and his cronies in big oil.

When Bush left office, average national gas prices were $1.85 a gallon. Some going away present.

Gas prices last week were $2.72.

Obama was in control of regulating gulf drilling for 18 months before the BP disaster. But instead of doing inspections, the MMS was tasked by Obama/Salazar with encouraging wind farm development.

Obama can't close it because the Senate Republicans won't let him.
This is the funniest one. The Democrats had a filibuster proof majority in the Senate until after Obama missed his own deadline. There's a story in the London Times today about how Obama, by executive order, suspended all repatriations of Yemenis from Gitmo, after the Christmas Day bombing. The Yemenis are mad.

The GOP has had nothing to do with Obama's failure on this issue. He made a stupid promise he can't keep.

LIAR. When they had jobs they paid higher taxes than the richest Americans.

In 2006 the average federal tax rate for the top 1% of
wage earners was 22.8%. The average rate for the 26-50th percentile -- as reasonable a definition of 'middle class' as I can find -- was 7.0%. The average rate for the bottom 50th percentile was 3%.

Most of those who planned 9/11 are at large.
According to most reputable commenters, 9/11 was planned by Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Bin Laden and Muhammed Atef. Atef was killed in the invasion of Afghanistan. Muhammed is in custody, although Eric Holder is agonizing about whether he should get the death penalty. Bin Laden is still at large.

Borrowing from China - caused by entitlement spending. Something Bush said he would fix and didn't

He tried. Dems in Congress blocked Social Security Reform. And you can't blame the gross increases in domestic spending, such as the 'stimulus' bill, on Bush. Nor can you blame health care so called reform.

I won't count this against you, because it is true, albeit only partially true, to say that Bush failed to control entitlement spending. What efforts he made to do so were prevented by others.

But all in all, it's a pretty miserable performance Shoey. Perhaps you should find another hobby -- maybe one you might actually be good at?
