How convenient

A few days ago an OpEd ran in the OWH by former "Mayor" during the Fahey Administration, Paul Landow.

This OpEd ran three days AFTER the Mayoral election. Three days after Mike Fahey's endorsed candidate won.

Remember that candidate? Along with pledges to build a bridge to Iowa and the Pope Benedict Slide, you will remember that Jim Suttle promised that he would not rule out raising taxes.

Huh, what?

And what does Mayor Landow write?
"Mayor-elect Suttle will have to raise taxes."
Hmm. Wouldn't THAT have been a nice item to have BEFORE the election?

But of course, the gall is that Landow lists a bevy of items -- pension reform, debt, AAA bond rating, and taxes -- that the new Mayor should, nay, MUST fix.

Or, you know, they could have been addressed DURING THE PAST EIGHT YEARS!

Can we yell that loud enough?

Not only is someone suggesting that all the problems get fixed -- it's the guy who should have done it in the first place!

Jaded? Why would we be jaded?

***

In case you thought the Presidential campaign was over, if you were watching, you would have noticed that MoveOn.org and their buddies are still hunting for scalps.

Since the John McCains of the world aren't evil enough any more, now they've set their sites on the "conservative" Dem Senators. One of their top targets? Yup, E. Ben Nelson.

Take a look:

You see, Nelson had the nerve to suggest that everyone shouldn't roll over and play dead as the Obama Administration takes us on the quick jog towards socialism.

Tinker to adjust the Health Care system? Nah, put the insurance industry out of work!

Because who knows better how to fix the health care and banking industries than a Chicago community organizer?

European (or is it Asian?) Socialism is such a dandy system, lets demand that it operate here!

Oh any by the way, your Nebraska activist Dems think Ben Nelson is a traitor for doing this. "Next time I would even vote for Pete Ricketts," they'll tell you.

But no, Voter, you keep on voting for your personalities like Obama and Jim Suttle. Don't make them tell you what they'll do when they're elected -- just feel good about their speeches and hate on the other guy.

You'll like what they do after the elections, right? Right???

Landow is a clown - - he also said no candidates should take $$ from the police and fire union - - this after they put Fahey in office. Comical.

UNO GRAD said...

He's a clown with tenure. Will he ever get a job that isn't funded by the taxpayers????

macdaddy said...

If anyone out there voted for Suttle while believing that he would not raise taxes, then a fool and his money are soon parted. I don't think Landow's op-ed would have made a bit of difference in this election. His opinion probably did make a big difference in Fahey's decision to forgo another run.

Paul Landow is a genius. He should have ran for mayor.

Sour Grapes said...

Wow SS, you're kind of going off the deep end aren't ya? Lol.

Should it come as no surprise - the LIBS want to raise taxes. This will kill small business, families. They will move to Sarpy and Washington Counties or move to Valley and the sort.

Dumb ass LIBS!

i wouldn't be surprised if EBN actually asked Moveon.org to make these ads against him in order to prove his conservative bona-fides to Nebraska voters. He is such a two-faced phony, but I have to give him credit that he is a prodigy when it comes to fooling his voters. Nebraska HAS to be able to find a competent Republican to run against him.

Anonymous said...

As the former mayor of Omaha, Landow should be the man we all go to with questions concerning city governance. The guy is what Omaha needs.

Anonymous said...

The city would face a serious financial shortfall regardless of who won the election. It's a recession people. When such a severe drop in sales tax revenue occurs, there is a problem.

And implying that some of those issues should have been fixed in the past years would imply that problems were generated by the prior officiating body.

Anonymous said...

Duh?

You don't think that the current Mayor had anything to do with the current police and fire contracts? The condition of those pension funds is exactly why our AAA Bond rating slipped last year. That is Fahey's fault.

The problem is the idea that raising taxes will solve anything, it hasn't worked in California, has it?! They had a double digit tax increase in January to make up for the shortfall in their budget. Not only are they still short, but they are shorter than they were in January. So, did the tax increase in CA not create additional revenue (since they never do) or did those fine Pols out in California decide to spend more 'cuz they thought they was gonna get more?

Paul...

Who would you pick to run against Nelson? Surely not Heineman...Bruning? Either might be an improvement...but by how much? They are great cheerleaders...but cheerleaders are a dime a dozen.

Bruning showed his colors when he backed away from Johanns.

I find it funny that our favorite dimocrat, BTO, goes after Nelson. Republicans couldn't ask for a better cheerleader. Shows what idiots the dimwits really are. Nelson's a powerhouse, and I like the fact he doesn't bend over and do everything he's told by the Dims.

Hey, I know how we can win elections! Hear me out, it's the most brilliant idea EVER!

We'll call the voters stupid!

Shane Osborn will destroy Ben Nelson.

Anonymous said...

Any Republican would be a fool to take on Nelson in a Presidential election year. Under normal circumstances it's difficult to knock off a two-term incumbent, especially one as popular as Ben Nelson. But with a Presidential race sucking up all the oxygen in the room? Nelson won't have to do much more than keep his head low and push forward to win comfortably.

Anonymous said...

Sadly, Anon 8:01 is right. Nelson seems to get all the breaks and no matter how irritated The Big B O is with Nelson, he will stump for him because he needs the crossover vote that Nelson gets.

That said, I do think Nelson is vulnerable, but the challenger will have to be someone with a proven record and high name ID. It is just too bad that Nelson lucked into a Presidential Year for his reelect.

Brian T. Osborn said...

Anonymous 8:11,

I don't think so.

Anonymous said...

BTO,

What part are you thinking just ain't so? Do you actually think that The O will throw Nelson under the bus? Or do you think a novice no-name can take him down?

Brian T. Osborn said...

The latest Anonymouse,

The part I doubt, actually, the part I am certain of, is where BTO stumps for him.

Yeah, Osborn, I'd like to know, too.

Just what are your sentiments for our farway, 'See Ya Suttle'?

I said...

Sorry Insider, didn't mean you,
was referring to the Tweep Osborn, not you. Mine just came in after you ran your blog.

I don't like the yuk, Suttle, yuk either. Can't even bring myself to call him anything other.

And, Brian T. Osborn - you may be carrying a low "C" in politic science, but you, totally have flunked my class in 'humanities'.

Go on home now, Anonymous Brian, your momma is calling you.

Anyone, now, can run against the most Simple/Suttle. I believe, I myself, should run against him. Atleast, some female!!! And, the issues to fix, it really does NOT matter. In fact, I don't even have to say a thing or even try to promise anything. Just got to be a Democrat to get my feet in the door. And that's pretty easy to do.

Anonymous said...

Isn't that what Suttle acually did?

Your're Being Deceived said...

Yes, acually (actually) he WAS a Repubican, BUT, went Democratic when he was told to by (?) from HDR. But, then he is (was) also a Rebel, and very much against, and hates the Yankees. OH MY ! What are we??? I tell you - he's NOT for Omaha. He's JUST for himself.

Check it out!

Anonymous said...

Hasn't the Rebel/Suttle already prooved himself??? For one thing, where was he born and raised ???
West Virginia... look it up !!!

I mean seriously......
THINK... WAKE UP OMAHA !!!

With Suttle we are STILL fighting the Civil War. Just look at it. He can't get along with ANYONE, here, in Omaha. PERIOD !!! Not at HDR, not in City Hall, not on the City Council, not with many friends, and/or family or foe.

IF, you don't believe me,
Check it out for yourselves!!!
I'm telling you!!! And, the truth!!!

Maybe, he doesn't really give a .... about Omaha. NOT REALLY !!!

Hanafan Fan said...

I got a better idea - Tom Hanafan -why don't you go over to Omaha and KICK ASS - the new mayor-elect could use some lessons from your mayorship. You turned Council Bluffs around - you could teach a few lessons to help Omaha get back on it's feet from the Fahey mess. And you could save Omaha from total destruction.

If you are looking for someone to blame for the pension mess, look to George W. Bush. Spiking made the problem a little worse, to be sure. But the real problem is what happened to the pension fund investments. How has your 401K done lately? The Bush economic meltdown is the root cause of the pension shortfall.

I find it hilarious that in all the comments on this blog, I seem to be the only one who inherited his father's surname. I guess that gives me good reason to be a bit egomaniacal. I'm proud of my name, and I put it on the stuff I write because I stand by what I say.

Anonymice are cowards ... period.

Brian T. Osborn said...

Oh, and speaking of egomaniacs. Why the hell do you Omahans all think that everyone in Nebraska orbits around your gravitational field? I'm sure Mr. Suttle will do a fine job as your mayor despite all the crybabying that has been going on here on Leavenworth Street.

Insider said...

Based on what Brian? Spill it. I'd love to know what info that you have that nobody else was given indicating that he will do fine. Perhaps somebody might explain why certain information was withheld by Fahey/Suttle about the status of the illegal immigrant killing that poor little girl until AFTER the polls closed? (Your gonna get sick of this question, because I am going to keep asking it until it gets an answer. My appologies, but it does need to be answered.)

What are you talking about with regard to the rest of NE revolving around Omaha? I'd have to reread the posts, but as I remember it, the posts revolve around the blog topic. It's kind of how things work. My only criticism of the posts are that some seem to go a bit off topic, which in my oppinion waters down the true arguments. If Omaha does think NE revolves around it, perhaps it's because an overwhelming pct of it's population is here, so it actually makes sense. Farmland doesn't vote, people do, and this is where most of them reside.

With regard to your name, I am assuming you are related to Tom Osborn, which is why you are making such a big deal about posting your name. Is that correct?

Thanks SS on the spellings. Didn't have time to look them up. It just seemed like a comment from somebody that might like to ride their parents' coattails without really succeeding at anything themselves. Granted, I am basing this on only a few comments from him, but you use what you have, and I feel pretty comfortable with that assessment.

A win is NOT a win. Ask Olympian Ben Johnson, Grammy winners Milli Vanilli, Bernie Madoff and you get the point. They all won too...sort of.

Brian T. Osborn said...

Sweeper - Thanks for the name spellings. At least no one has asked me, "Where's Harriet?" (showing my age there.)

1/3 - Nah, in the U.S. Navy you're expendable. You're expected to go down with the ship rather than give up state secrets.

Inside Edition - My father was a musician named Eddie. My mother, Aileen, is a 90 year old retired nurse. Yeah, I'm living off their fame and fortune, and damned proud of both of them for all the joy and health they brought to the good people in central Nebraska over the years.

Here's a bone for ya. Mom was a lifelong Republican that became a Democrat after I asked her, "Mom, how did you raise six Liberal kids when you claim to be a Republican?" Her reply, "I don't know ... give me the form." Dad was, like many WWII vets (yeah ... Navy), a Democrat.

Wow... What do ya think?

Is a win... really a win...if it's done unfairly and unscrupulously?

So... if someone cheats to win... do you think they really won?

I DON'T

You keep insinuating that there was something nefarious about this on the part of our mayor and mayor-elect, and yet you can do nothing but spew fantasies and conspiracy theories about. Let us know when you have something concrete, we'll be waiting.

Nate:

Scott Voorhees and a lot of other people are "spewing" it too. It's not a conspiracy theory, it's a simple question. Funny how when there is a question that nobody wants to answer, that it is labeled as a conspiracy. Answer it and it goes away. Simple enough.

You mentioned your father being a muscian. Is you father Eddie Ha Dad? If so, I may remember him.

Listened to the Scott Voorhees Show last Friday and again Monday. There are alot of people wanting answers but Jim Suttle won't comment about his remarks about uncriminolizing illegals.

Go to KFAB - the Scott Voorhees website and listen to it for yourselves. Scott is correct on this issue regarding amnesty. As well as, considering our new mayor as - Santuary/Suttle. Go listen. He's only asking for some answers.

Relentless said...

Me too Nate. Not insinuating a thing, just asking a simple question that could be cleared up with a simple answer. That's all.

The death of 4 yr old Josie Bluhm IS a direct result of an illegal immigrant. If he weren't here, she would be alive and playing today. If he was here legally, it would be much more difficult for him to fall through the cracks of the justice system as he did.

Considering this was a hot-button issue in the election due to Suttle's own statements, the original and the follow-up,
everybody (including Fahey and Suttle) knows this would have had an impact on the election results if this information had been released when known earlier in the day on Tuesday. Fahey was in a position to supress this, and both Suttle and he were the benefactors. It's a very simple question that deserves an answer. When was this information known, and why was it withheld until the following day? (I will ask this daily until somebody official answers it).

Nate said...

It'll be interesting to see how the budget shortfall is made up. Chuck Sigerson says:
"How deep do you cut? Do you start mowing every 21 days instead of every 14 days? Pretty soon the city begins to fray around the edges".
When you have a shortfall you either need to increase revenue or devcrease expenses, but there are only so many ways you can do either one. There needs to be a combination of both to make the solution work best. Im predicting right now, Suttle will only be a one term mayor. Tough decisions are going to need to be made, and tough decisions are never popular.
