GOP's Future in Omaha

On this day-after, let us make sure we state the obvious, lest someone try to argue otherwise at a future date:

Hal Daub beat Hal Daub on Tuesday. The election was a referendum on Daub, pure and simple.

No one (with any sense) went to the polls and said, "that Jim Suttle guy has the right ideas for Omaha!" Of course that is mainly because Suttle offered no ideas during the campaign. He simply drove the "I'm not Hal Daub!" sound car up and down the streets so that people knew they could check his name.

Daub pointed out in his election night speech that he wouldn't have done anything differently in the campaign. And how could he have? People knew who he was, knew he had all the ideas, knew he was the superior intellect and manager, and just over half the voters still decided they didn't like him. He was never going to change his personality.

And Daub was stuck at times. His negatives were always high, and he had a difficult time besting 40% in some polls. So he was forced to go negative against Suttle, to raise Suttle's negatives (which were basically in the "unknown" department prior to that). That gave Suttle the opening to go with the "same old negative Hal Daub" line. And it worked.

Daub could have tweaked some of his ads (we weren't nuts about he Suttle-sled one), but he really ran into the same problem, so to speak -- he is, was, and ever shall be Hal Daub.

But note that being "Hal Daub" nearly got him elected again. And it let him lead a successful city previously as Mayor. It let him be a successful lawyer and businessman. It let him be a successful member of the MECA board. It let him be a successful Congressman.

Daub, and the Daub campaign, should have no regrets and no apologies. Sure you can always come up with something that you would do differently as you look back. It was close. Whaddaya gonna do.

***

Now, a few notes about Hal Daub and some other candidates.

There is an argument floating around that Hal Daub should have stepped aside and let Jim Vokal (or maybe Dan Welch) run for Mayor because Daub (and Maxwell) should have known that he couldn't win the General Election no matter who he ran against.

It is certainly the case that Daub knew he would have had a much more difficult time against Jim Vokal than he did against Jim Suttle. There was a reason why Daub went after Vokal and not Suttle in the primary.

But the idea that Daub should have stepped aside for Vokal (or that Chip Maxwell should have done the same for Brian Buescher) has no merit.

If Vokal or Buescher couldn't win in the primary on their own accord, they don't deserve to be in the general. Daub lost in the general by 1,463 votes -- less than 2%. Maxwell lost by less than 500 votes. It is too convenient for the Vokal and Buescher proponents to come in now and declare who could have won those races.

We think that both Vokal and Buescher were and are outstanding candidates. They both have a bright future in Omaha and Nebraska politics, ran good campaigns and would have been excellent in the positions they sought.

But no one inherits a right to a candidacy. To suggest that someone else step aside "for the good of the party" usually means that you want them to do it for the good of your guy. Next time we suggest running a more effective campaign yourself. You control your own destiny, not the other guy.

>***

Suttle's win in Tuesday's election ended a fantastic and tumultuous career for Hal Daub. While Daub will likely be around for a long time more and continue to be a mover and shaker, it is unlikely (we think) that he will run for another major office.

So where does that leave the Republican Party in Omaha?

We look at Omaha, mainly because Dave Heineman still has a firm grasp on the Governor's office. And back locally, Lee Terry isn't leaving any space in a GOP Primary. (If Terry ever leaves or loses, there would be a cut-throat in-party battle for his seat.)

So lets focus back on Omaha city government. There is certainly a vacuum right now for the Mayor's office in 2013. Think that's too far off? Ask Jim Suttle when he decided to start running for Mayor.

So who would you point to for a challenge to him?

Running down the list of elected Republicans you could look at (in theory) Chuck Sigerson, Franklin Thompson and Jean Stothert on the Council. (Keep in mind that Suttle was a one-termer.)

There are Jim Vokal and Dan Welch who recently left, and could possibly be interested in a return.

Others interested? Dave Kramer? Dave Nabity? Someone else with enough money or influence to build up name ID? (And by the way, don't think this isn't one of the MAIN responsibilities of the state and local party apparatus.)

We're interested in your suggestions. It may give a good indication of what will happen in the nearer-than-you-think future.

Oh, wake up guy, I'm with you on that! Our Republican leadership definitely was lacking this race and we need our DCRP and the NEGOP to be re-organized and re-vamped.

I just don't want any Dems to get any big heads thinking Suttle won because his IDEAS (snort!) were so much better.

Okay, so everybody knows that these were a NON-PARTISAN races, right?

I'm awake, I'm awake...

I did not hear any candidate talkiing about drunk driving or the fact that there are way too many liquor licenses in this town. That's the real issue in the drinking and driving tragedy that just happened. Slim Jim wants to go the other direction and increase minors access to bars. Taking on the bars in this town, that would take courage and leadership.

Now, back to sleep people

TokenD,

It's amazing how you know what Suttle was thinking since he was unwilling to explain himself publicly. He had a chance to explain himself but refused. Do you honestly think Suttle isn't a dirty politician who will do anything to win? I know what he'll stoop to, and soon everybody else will get a glimpse of what he is all about. I can't wait for that.

Lee Terry won Douglas County by 1,000 votes, but let's not kid ourselves. It was the national Republican Party who won that race for Terry. And his traditional advantage in Sarpy County padded the margin. The Douglas County Republican Party can't claim credit for that victory.

No, county parties have the greatest impact on local races, and on this count, the DCRP has been getting spanked for the past three years.

2006 wins:
John Friend

2006 losses:
Don Kleine
Roger Morrissey
John Ewing
Pam Tusa
Steve Lathrop

Kleine and Ewing defeated Republican incumbents. Tusa knocked off an incumbent county commissioner for the first time since I-don't-know-when.

As if 2006 wasn't bad enough, 2008 was even worse. Republicans failed to field a single challenger to any incumbent Democrat in Douglas County government.

Of the competitive races on the ballot, Anne Boyle crushed John McCollister, and Marc Kraft beat Chip Maxwell. Beau McCoy beat Rex Moats. That's it.

Two wins in two cycles - and that's being generous, since the NEGOP did most of the work on McCoy's race.

Two wins, a bunch of losses, and even more no-shows. Then they lost the council and the Mayor's race. Pathetic.

DC Voter said...

I'm sure the party apologists will attack me when I say this, but we need to dump the idiots who are running the DCRP. Two wins in three cycles is bad even during an anti-Republican climate.

If the local Republican Party wants to save itself it needs to move to the center;

Things it can do:

Allow Republicans like Brad Ashford to have more influence.

Dump the evangical right, "value-based politics" and focus on taxes & crime.

Invite Michael Steele to town. Hold the next Republican dinner in north Omaha.

Honor people like Jack Kemp & former Rep Arlen Spector.

Get your message on MTV, Ellen, The View, etc.

Hold the next Republican dinner in north Omaha?

Yeah, because I'm sure the wealthy donors to the Republican Party will be thrilled about that.

And I'm sure North Omaha will love the patronizing nature of holding a fundraising dinner that they cannot and would not attend in their backyard.

I would sugges the first thing Republicans do is to find their soul.

Help get Michael Savage into the UK!

Why is it that the GOP always has to move to the center and never the Democrats? Why are Republicans always told that they should abandon their beliefs to win votes? Personally, I believe that if the GOP doesn't become liberal, they'll have some success because then people might see that they're willing to stand up for what they believe

The car incident was a tragedy, no doubt about that. But are you seriously claiming that there was a cover-up by local officials, that this incident is somehow Jim Suttle's fault, AND that this is the first "scandal" for the new mayor? Are you serious?

Nate,
I don't know about that, but it does seem that Fahey had the budget numbers several days ago, before the election, but held out in coming out with them. You know, the same numbers and recommendations that Suttle said he would follow. Incidentally, I heard that those numbers indicate that our property taxes are going up about about 14%. Correct me if I am wrong, but I beleive it is at least that. Does that count as scandal #1 or #2? Wonder if that would have affected voting?

For the other to be a scandal, I guess we would have to know how soon they knew the guy was an illegal immigrant, and who was in a position to keep that quiet from early morning until the poles closed. I do imagine that if people knew about it early in the day, it would have affected voting given Suttle's statements on immigration. Does Fahey have that power, and does Fahey have a history of hiding things from the public?

Wonder how many more scandals there will be? I've already heard a lot of talk about a recall.

And The Grandma said...

Exactly, it's a pretty sad day in Omaha, and tomorrow will be an even sadder day, at 10:30 AM, at the funeral for the little 4-year old Josie Bluhm. I can't help but wonder how her family must be feeling, and what they could be experiencing at this moment in their lives. I, thank GOD, I, have never had to go through what the entire Bluhm family must be going through right now!!!

Now, I am also, wondering if the immediate family, extended family, and their friends are upset NOW - over the ILLEGAL immigration problems that we are ALL facing.

These problems, that we have, not ONLY here, in the United States, but, ALSO, right here in Omaha. We watch the news, we see the occurances over and over and over, unfortunately again.

I am wondering if Josie's mother was taking her children, maybe to daycare, so, she could go to work.
Or, how much worse for her, IF, she was going early Tuesday, so, she could go vote before she went to work, and, for a man who would uphold for illegal immigration.

It would be interesting to know, but, like other things it could get covered up. The polls opened at 8:00 am, Tuesday morning. The timing of this tragedy is upmost interesting. Let us look at the timing, for JOSIE'S SAKE, and for the possibility of other future victims. I wonder have we been victimized, NOT ONLY, by illegal immigrants, BUT by our supposibly representitives as well.

Tuesday morning, I saw the news (breaking news) of the accident at 180th & Center, a little after 8:00am, which scared me, thinking of my own grandchildren in that area of town. So, I listened up real close and kept watching for more coverage to see the vehicles that were involved. Then, realized the vehicles involved were not the vehicles my grandchildren would have been in, was releived, BUT, sick for the other little children in a BAD situation. So, I watched ALL day to find out the outcome of the children and people involved.

Didn't know Tuesday morning but until Wednesday sometime that it was and 'illegal immigrant' that caused the 4 car pile up (and, yet little Josie at this time was still alive). Had also, talked to a family member that assured me that my own grand
children were alright. :) But, it was intense when I first heard that breaking news.

Now, I wonder just what their schedule was for the day, or would have been!!!

Now, I wonder, if they planned to vote for legal immigration or illegal immigration. To put it in a nutshell, or in otherwords.
Hal Daub vs. Jim Suttle.

I hope to the readers of this it will be understood, and, I don't mean to make light of the tragedy that we have actually ALL just experienced. I would like for this NOT to ever happen again. It is an extremely SAD, UNFORTUNATE SITUATION. It can happen to any of us or (our family members). BUT, how much worse when it really happens to one of our innocents and is at the hand of an allowed illegal immigrant.

It just makes me sick to think about it. Cannot imagine what they must be feeling, let alone thinking! Can't believe there are people on this blog site that condones illegal immigration! It just sickens me to think of cold hearted people! I was against illegal immigration before this BUT, I am even MORE against it now. This was an innocent little girl who should have had a bright future!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And, a pretty and sweet looking little girl. Makes me think of my own daughters when they were young
HOW, would I be feeling and what would I be thinking. Especially, IF, which I wouldn't vote for any one who would uphold for ILLEGAL immigration.

And, to ALL of the above bloggers that gave me a hard time earlier over my sentiments about this tragedy - be you one or all of the same - how are you going to show a charitible contribution? Maybe, you plan to donate for some of the huge expenses being put on this young family - maybe not. Are you going to donate to the Bluhm family of fanancial support for the hospital/medical/funeral/etc expenses? This is a young family and you can be sure that their debts are going to be high. This illegal didn't have auto insurance
WHY??? Because he is illegal!!! Instead of going through the ropes the right way to become legal - he didn't. I'm sure he is probably very sick about what happened but the problem is that - he was not so concerned about somebody else more than himself. Obviously, there are a number of issues here, but, the one that stands out the most is the FACT that he was here ILLEGALLY and he has slipped thru the system for 12 years. Keep in mind the conditions in Mexico are alot different than here and they may either get away with more or just maybe they have found that we are EASY.

I have got to end my blogging and start again. I am lost on this issue for right now. But, feel very strongly against illegal immigration enoungh that I WILL come back to it.

I am SO upset that I just realized that I am rambling. This is SO lengthy that I am losing my place with it, BUT don't want to go back to fix it. So take it as it is!!!

Insider,
I was referring to other commentators who made the claim that the death of the little girl was Suttle's fault because the driver was an illegal, the supposed "cover up" about the fact the driver was an illegal and that it wasn't released until the next day because of some conspiracy, and that together this all counts as the first scandal of the Suttle administration. I wasn't referring to any budget numbers. And with how low in regard Fahey is held, I dont think he could pressure the police department into keeping this quiet. Would it have affected voting? Marginally yes, but i bet most voters dont base their votes on single incidents such as this.

Insider said...

Nate,
I'm not so sure this wouldn't have affected the outcome. Suttle started off slightly ahead, then Daub pulled ahead and seemed to have the momentum to win, but at the very end of the day there were a flood of votes for Suttle. This indicates to me that the final votes of the day determined the winner. Also, from what I've heard from MANY people, unscientific I know but worth noting, they thought Daub had it so they didn't vote.

Could Fahey keep this quiet? Hard to say, particularly due to his lame duck status, but keep in mind that Fahey's protege (which probably makes Fahey throw up a bit in his mouth, but be that as it may) would be taking over. This puts "them" in charge of peoples' careers who are the ones holding the information. I personally know that Suttle is not opposed to offering, lets call them "favors" to people or even making threats to get what he wants, and I only say things I can proove in a court of law, and there is much more that I am not saying.

I don't believe Suttle is directly responsible for this tragedy, but his beliefs are going to allow it to happen, and may very well increase it. Would Jim feel differently if this poor sweet little girl was related to him? I know I would be devastated, and even moreso to think that if somebody had just enforced the law just one out of several times it could have been avoided. It's a what-if that will haunt that family for life. I realize locally that we have limits to eliminating this probelem, but my question is, does Jim's postion on this help these situations or make them worse?

I'm well aware that there was a slight change in the DCRP leadership but their track record isn't any better. So far they've lost a Mayoral race and the city council. I think we need to whip the slate completly clean.

Anonymous said...

The attacks on the DCRP and NEGOP for the '08 cycle (and '06 cycle for that matter) are rediculous. The Republicans lost the house, senate, and presidency during those cycles. This was one of the biggest changes of power in the history of the U.S. So was the DCRP and NEGOP supposed to single handely change the politics in the whole country during those elections and somehow not lose a vote?! Give me a break.

You're right, the party lost some seats. But look at the facts of the races they lost. Most of the time the candidate imploded or other circumstances clearly caused the loss and the party had nothing to do with it.

For example, we lost the County Treasurer's seat. No informed person would blame anyone but the former treasurer's massive mistakes for that disaster. We lost the register of deeds. Unfortunately, anyone who paid attention to that election knows the real estate community abandoned our Republican Register of Deeds after performance problems within the office (i.e. delays in deed registration of deeds). Maxwell's county board seat--well, if he had knocked on half the doors he did for his city council race (which isn't saying much) he would have destroyed the very weak (and twice recently defeated) Kraft.

County Commish Kathleen McCollister did and said some things that made her less than reelectable. The hard core right wing volunteers certainly didn't show up to help her and bashed her at every opportunity. The party probably could have done something there, but Kathleen made it harder than it should have been.

Stu Dornan's seat, well, that one is one the party probably could have done beter on. It certainly didn't help that Atty Gen. Bruning basically endorsed his former deputy Don Kleine. However, Kleine was also a highly qualified candidate after being deputy co atty for like 15 years. I don't recall Dornan bashing the party's peformance in that one but there probably was more to do there and that's one we let get away.

The gloom and doom on the DCRP is rediculous. At a time when the House, Senate, and Presidency went from R to D, (along with a $2.5 million money dump into douglas county by Obama and the national Ds compared to $0 from the RNC), Douglas County has done much better than the Rs nationally.

That's probably why there has been little, if any, DCRP bashing until the last 3 or 4 weeks. Even that bashing is misplaced.

To Fed Up Already and a few other recent posts:

My hope is that none of this will cause any vigilantism, unless of course it is in the voting booth. Innocent people should not be hurt in an attempt to punish the true wrong-doers, or we are no better than they are.

I know how you feel, but the best way we can do that is to be careful about who we elect. That is one of the great things about the country we live in. Unfortuneately, we forget to take advantage of that with things like low voter turnout. I suspect if we knew this guy was illegal at about the same time that Scoot Voorhees did, many more people would have voted, and I have a hunch HOW they would have voted.

After listening to Scott Voorhees the other day, if it turns out that Fahey/Suttle knew that the person causing the accident was illegal, then perhaps that is a good sign to consider a recall. If it was held back, they knew the implications of releasing that information and purposely hid it to further their OWN agendas, not that of the public good which is what they were elected to do. Holding back that info protected nobody but them. It is beyond ridiculous that something like this should happen on what is essentially Suttle's first day as mayor (elect). I realize Fahey was technically mayor, and thus holds the reigns over the police chief, but Fahey backed Suttle and has a vested interest in having Suttle sweep in and accept his recommendations without question. You know, the ones in which our already high taxes will spike another 14%-plus. Nobody has corrected my numbers, so I'll assume what I heard is correct.

I have a feeling there is going to be so much scandal and misdoing's with Suttle's administration, that eventually he will be recalled. I beleive Suttle was part of Boyle's administration when Boyle was recalled. Maybe that's telling.

I'll make no bones about it. With what I know of the Suttle's, I was beyond disappointed, not to mention completely shocked, that he was elected. I'll try to find the positive in it though. Now many more people will see him as I, and many other insiders do. I doubt it will be a 4 year term.

Later, (roughly 3 years) they get divorced. NOW, they are citizens!!!
And, they have worked the system. Worked around the IMMIGRATION LAWS.

I do know that the funding shortfalls have to be made up somehow, considering how much the city budget has been cutback so far I dont know how much smaller it can conceivably go.

Lautenbaugh for Governor?? I hope we can do better than that. His priority bill this session was allowing smoking at cigar bars (none of which are in his district). Quite the visionary.

Let me try to be a voice of reason on this blog;

Let us all refrain from personal attacks or digging into to people's personal lives.

I am sure that if there is personal baggage in a political figure's life it will come to life on its own one way or another.

In the meantime, let's focus on the important issues at hand. Remember, we are electing flawed human beings to office, not Saints.

The local GOP has plenty of talented young leaders who can rebuild the party.

Among them;

Shane Osborn
Dan Welsch
Jim Vokal
Rick Carter
Abbie Cornett
Pete Ricketts
Dan Krammer
Scott Launtenbaugh
Carlos Castillo
Dave Phipps
Mark Quandhall
PJ Morgan (yes I am serious)

Don't change GOP, focus on crime, immigration, & taxes

Abbie Cornett?? Haahaahaahaahaahaahaaahaahaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To Anonymous,

Mike Kennedy has a bright future with the Party. He was won 3 elections in a row and has supported numerous Republican candidates over the years. He along with other young office holders are our Party's future. As for Brad Ashford, you are right.

Anon 1:08,

Will you PLEASE learn how to spell your heroes' names?! It is just flat out annoying when it is so obvious that a person has no idea what they are talking about. If you want to be passionate about your candidate, then for God's sake, learn a little about them, start with their names!

Are we back to trashing good republicans again!!! Great

What if within peoples' personal lives, we see things that are obstruction of justice, with a long history of covering up crimes by people close to them. Is it warranted then? Let me throw out a "hypothetical" situation. What if there were a teacher in a local school system who lost a position for sexually assaulting a student, but continues to teach in another local school system because of their parent's connections and ability to keep things like this hidden. Is it warranted to know about personal lives then?

GOP Official - - he's been winning elections b/c his last name is Kennedy. That and a quarter guarantees you victory in lower-level races. If he runs a race in which people have to get to know him, he has no chance.

GOP OFFICIAL said...

Wow what venom Anonymous, did you lose a city council race or something? I think Kennedy has had the OWH endorsements each time he was elected. I have seen his name on most republican endorsement pieces for many candidates over the years and he has been elected numerous times to the State and County Central Committee's and the various conventions. So I believe most of the GOP stalwarts like him. If you are mad he supported Jean Stothert this past cycle that explains a lot Anonymous.

Anonymous said...

So, Richard Carter is a Republican now? Interesting.

Anonymous said...

And here's what you don't understand:

That cyclical nature is going to take a long time to come back to the Republicans, especially if they keep purging the moderates from their party.

Democrats only started winning again once they found an inclusive message.

But demographics are rapidly changing. Young people overwhelmingly favor Democrats, and as they grow up, more of them will vote. (Contrary to what you may think, the age demographics of parties are not static. Most people over 60 are Democrats because they grew up as Democrats. Most people in their 40s grew up Republicans. Most people in their 20s right now? They are Democrats.)

But it's not just age demographics. In the next few decades, the racial composition of the electorate is going to change drastically. Racial attitudes are changing, and the Republican Party better start changing with them, or they are going to be in the wilderness for a long time.

The average age of Rush Limbaugh's listership is 67. Fox News' average viewer is in his/her 60s.

The Republican/conservative talkers will keep talking, but they are not/will not reach the audience they need to grow the Teapublican party.

Major policy shifts will be necessary. The risk of course is that the social conservatives/religious right will abandon the Republicans. I personally don't see that happening because theis really is no place for them to go. Ron Paul/Libertarian?

Wake up, people!

Dave Phipps is not a good choice..He is not electable and he has screwed up several candidacies.

Fellow GOP members, are we overlooking the Douglas County Board?

Perhaps Kyle Hutchings or Mary Ann Borgeson or Clare Duda can aspire for higher office?

Maybe Borgeson for Mayor in four years? It would get women to consider the GOP?

Kyle Hutchings is a proven conservative.

Up and comers - Mike Kennedy, Carlos Castillo, Dan Welsch.

Adam Plageman is the future of GOP in Omaha!

Ernie Chambers for Governor! Yeah, think about it!

The Republicans need new leadership. Anyone is better than the clowns that are in now.

Someone please get Lee Terry to step down!

Dan Welsch, Jim Vokal, Mike Kennedy, Rick Carter, Kyle Hutchings, Jean Stothert, Chip Maxwell could reshape the party.
