Turning Terry

Lots of campaign news over the past three days. Let us review.

On Friday CQ Politics moved Nebraska’s second District from “Likely Republican” to “Safe Republican”.

(Pssst! Lee Terry is the Republican.)

***

On Saturday, CNN updated their list of the 100 most vulnerable House races.
Lee Terry was on that list....

Was.

He is now on a new list:
Dropped from the CNN 100.

***

Saturday’s Wall Street Journal said,
"Democrats say they still have a narrow path to retaining the House. Their plan includes picking up four or five seats that are now held by Republicans, winning all of the other races that tilt their way and then taking the lion's share of the true toss-up contests."
The article goes on to state:
"The plan also includes winning several GOP-held seats--in Illinois, Florida and Delaware, where President Barack Obama and the first lady visited this week, and in Louisiana and Hawaii."
And NOT on that list.

NE-2.

***

And then on Sunday, the OWH endorsed Terry.
Yet even with that, many think Terry will still win! (snork)

***

And the latest fundraising numbers came in. The White camp was pretty excited that the Cash On Hand numbers were close.

And that’s nice if you haven’t spent any cash up to now.

But note a few things.

First, Tom White’s Vice President Biden fundraiser was a bomb.

(That’s “A” bomb, not “The” bomb.)

White received $37,817 from the committee that was formed for the Biden event -- it was a joint event with the state Democrats.

However, take a look at the expenditures: White paid $10,700 to the DCCC for “operations” to reimburse for costs of Biden, security etc.   Then they transferred $14,000 to the “Nebraska Victory Committee”, most likely for start-up/operations costs of the committee as it fundraised, rented the Field Club etc.

In short, White raised $37,800 but spent $24,700 to do it -- netting him a measly $13,100 for the visit.

Ugh.

To put this all in perspective, compare this to Jim Esch from 2008.

You remember Jim Esh? Lowly Jim Esch? The candidate that was sooo much inferior to the mighty Tom White?

Well, Esch raised $340,087 in the same quarter in 2008 (July 1 - Sept 30). Tom White raised $237,892.

Oh, and this quarter, Terry raised $445,017.

And for the race so far, Terry has raised about twice as much as White.

***

Of course, even with all of that, we still suggest that you go and vote. It’s a good idea.

Is Lee Terry proud of being a Republican? If so, I'd assume that in one of his commercials he might use/show the word. I can understand Tom White not using the word "Democrat" in his ads. He's already losing so why add to his already high negatives by really aligning himself with the "tax and spend liberal democrat" in chief.

Anonymous said...

Geo - Terry never uses that word in any advertisement. It's like he's trying to pretend that he is an "independent" Republican. Why is he scared???

I can't recall anytime in the last 3-4 election cycles an ad where Lee uses the word "Republican." He uses the following: independent, conservative, bi-partisan.

Anonymous said...

HAHAHAHA, find me ONE SINGLE person that has lived here for more than 2 years that doesn't know that Lee Terry is a Republican.

For one thing, Jim Esch tried to kill him with that title for 4 years.

Second, Lee Terry's family has been active in Republican politics for over 40 years in this community.

Lee Terry probably has over 95% name ID and likely over 80% Party ID.

Tom White? Very few people even know who he is. Those that do, can't say anything nice about him. And, WHITE is the guy running from his Party affiliation. Fortunately for him, very few people know how much money he raised from Labor Unions to stack the Legislature 2 years ago. Feel free to look it up on the NADC website (it's not very user friendly, but stick with it, White had a special committee for it.)

Are you guys new to politics or just new to Nebraska?

This is NONPARTISAN Unicameral-land where nothing is hated more than political parties. Everyone who runs for partisan office in Nebr pretends he or she isn't partisan. Why? How the heck do I know? Maybe it comes from eating too much corn.

Anonymous said...

I figured Lee was leading big when I saw the Tom white ad trying to scare senior citizens.

Anonymous said...

And Nebraska is relieved to White's brand of politics in the Unicam!!

Hmmm wonder where Ian will surface in the capitol?

Heheheheh Buh Bye Tom:)

Please feel free to make room on the bench for your bro Benedict Nelson:)

Well, it's the usual Monday morning nasty. Must be something someone did in someone's Wheaties.

I am to believe Lee Terry fights for his district when he doesn't even fight for himself?

When called out for having a possible encounter with a comely whatever, he runs to hide behind the skirts of Senator Mike who ironically does a great routine of "shame on Tom," while throwing a bit of mud himself. How noble.

Terry raised scads of money, is that why we are getting those silly stupid ads of large heads of strangers telling me he's a good guy? So much for production or creativity. Can't he tell me why being a conservative, or for that fact "Republican," is a good thing after 12 long years?

Bag on White as you must, what's not to say he doesn't have the intelligence and conviction to make a difference or at least bend some ears. He didn't get to be that successful as an attorney by failing to persuade judges and juries that his points weren't solid or had value.

White's worst mistake was having someone manage his campaign that didn't know squat in how to manage, while Terry's campaign doesn't know squat on how to market Lee's success assuming he has them.

Great use of resources I am sure the Tom White group is happy with you.

Anon 10:54: White has only himself to blame for his poorly run campaign. Competence should start from the top.

Here's a freebie idea for Tom White: pledge to refuse to vote for Nancy Pelosi for Speaker. Other democrats have done it. Tick tock, Tom. Only 2 weeks left. You need a Hail Mary pass.

No one will believe him after he hung the Biden Badge of honor around his neck for a measly $15 grand?!

From 10:54AM: I actually agree with your observation MacDaddy.

White has an ego problem, couple that with self-loathing and you get the bully who wants everything his way.

Oh well...... it's not like there weren't people out there trying to help him. I'm sure Jane was doing her best with all of Dick's dollars. Ian really, really, really wanted to get Tom elected. I guess Ian thought people would not look into White's back ground, or his work as a Legislator. Let alone his Independent Expenditures, nor his avoiding Taxes on his planes.

I suppose you could say Tom White lead the charge on Suttle. What with his bill to block the sewer separation project taxes and fees on fees. Or his not spending money in Omaha by parking his planes in Iowa....... Maybe Tom will run for Mayor? Whew that is scary.

Whatever the case, Tom White is done! There are a bunch of Democrats in Lincoln who are relieved he is out of the building. Now they can work on building bridges and mending fences. Heck they may even stop caucusing and behave in NON Partisan manner. Or Not.....

Anonymous said...

Just looks like all of the major indicators are falling toward Terry in the final weeks.

Anonymous said...

I don't know if White has done enough to define himself--and tell the voters who he is. It has been all "attack Terry"--just too much of it.

Anonymous said...

If the race was close, the DCCC would be here paying for White's attack ads.

Anonymous said...

At this point in 2008, the DCCC had already poured about $500,000 into NE2 for Esch.

No $$$ for Tom though.

Anonymous said...

This one is over. Stick a fork in White he is done. How about some insights on some races that are still up in the air. Anyone seen any polling on Lautenbaugh/Lorenzen?

The OWH editorial did have one, maybe two sentences where they said a nice thing about White.

Will he put the editorial on his web page?

Lack of Enthusiasm....

By the Dems...you can see it out on the streets.

You can also see it at NNN--Vile Kyle posted four articles this past week--only 3 people commented. Wow.

Anonymous said...

5:05--relevant comment in that the posts were harsh attacks against Terry and Heineman. Yet, no one seems to care about Vile Kyle's rants.

Anonymous said...

Are you sensing that there is a lot of entusiasm for Terry? I think the R's are happy for the win, but don't have very high expectations for him doing anything significant. Lee's not going to be confused with Thomas Jefferson. Most of Terry's materials have been not about how great he is, but rather that is not as bad as White. All pretty discouraging.

Anonymous said...

I have a question for Tom White--

If he stands by his votes in favor of the stimulus ($800 billion) and the $1.2 trillion healthcare law, why doesn't he mention either one in his ads?

Anonymous said...

Just aw Terry's ad--the one with Richard Carter and several others talking about Terry. Excellent ad!

Terry's done alot!

The only poll that counts is the one on Nov. 2.

Don't give up, Tom--you haven't lost yet!

Anonymous said...

No one cares about Vile Kyle but himself. The same can be said for Jane and Ian. They won't be missed when they're finally gone - sort of like that BTOx guy.

Anonymous said...

Tom is just on the wrong side of the spending issue--he just can't get around it.

Terry has nailed White in the debates over the fact that White did not vote to balance the budget in last fall's special session.

It makes White look like a "Do as I say not as I do" person.

Anonymous said...

White would have a better case when he says Congress should 'balance the budget' had he voted to do it in the legislature. He didn't.

Hypocrite...

Anonymous said...

White's TV ads are way, way, way too negative. Who advises him? People are very tired of his attacks. We know what Tom is against (anything Lee Terry). What they want to know is what is Tom for?

I like what Don Walton wrote in the LJS; Sarpy County is a firewall for Republicans in District 2.
That's pretty sad the people south of Harrison St reflexively pull the lever for any Republican.
So, after redistricting next year, we can let a city in Sarpy go and elect a Democrat who really represents the interests of Omaha and Douglas County.
But maybe it's not over, if White runs a commercial about how Rep Terry and his wife like to ban books in public schools, to save Terry's relationship to energy companies like Mid America Energy.
(The books Robyn Terry got banned in the Millard Public Schools were regarding global warming).

I just saw Tom White's ad against Lee Terry on Terry's 2008 efforts to kill social security. The ad is killer, especially the line about how he got over $300K from the investment industry and how he will pocket a luxurious pension. We need pension reform not just from "greedy unions" but also need it for greedy politicians.

None of the Republicans running for state offices or Congress are using "Republican" on their yard signs except Don Stenberg. Big Mistake for these guys not to be playing off their party, if you ask me.

Two big articles in the OWH today. 1. The biggest tax cut in history was Obama's and no one remembers it. But it did happen on Obamas watch You know a democrat.
2. The South land of red necks and racists is solid republican. It goes back to the LBJ years and the Civil rights acts of 1964. I guess the OWH missed the memo by Glenn Beck and company on re writing history, that so many LS readers love to quote.

Don Stenberg has burning ambition and the personality of roadkill.

After being Atty General, he spent decades losing to everybody. Now he is running for a job that is on the chopping block because many deem it useless.

9:39 says everyone else running today is making a "big mistake" if they don't run like Stenberg. To run like Stenberg is to lose. Maybe 9:39 is Stenberg.

Nebraska Republicans have wasted a lot of time and money promoting Stenberg. They justify that by saying Stenberg is Conservative. So what. Most people in your neighborhood are Conservative.

No Democrat ever hurt the Nebraska GOP as much as Don Stenberg did. His presence on the ballot sent people to Washington who embarassed Nebraska. That doesn't mean Stenberg was the better choice. It means Don Stenberg is usually as electable as roadkill.

That's great that Obama cut taxes. BTW, how could we afford the largest tax cut in history when we can't afford the Bush tax cuts, which obviously weren't the largest tax cuts in history? Macdaddy I am glad your finally seeing the light on Obama the tax cutter. Obama wants to raise taxes back to the Clinton time period on on the rich. Keep taxes down for the middle class and the poor. Republicans said that would crash the economy back then. Well it did not happen.Wrong agian republicans. During that time period 25 million jobs were created. The budget was balanced. Oh I know it was a GOP congress that did that. The standard GOP take the credit when they did nothing to help. If a GOP congress was so great, how come they did so bad in the time period 2001-2007? Macdaddy said...

So far, Anon 10:07, Obama and the Democrats are also going to be known for the largest tax increase in American history because they couldn't be bothered to keep the Bush tax cuts in place. They have been too busy trying to remake America in Obama's own image. On January 1st, income taxes are going to increase by over 10% on all but the bottom two tiers, taxes on dividends will increase by up to 50%, capital gains taxes will increase by 33%, and many, many more people will have to pay AMT. How can this be? Obama is a tax cutter, you say. It's just like the 3 card monte guy. He let's you win one and then takes you for the rest of the money in your pocket. It must gall you that people aren't falling for it.

Macdaddy said...

Oops. Taxes on dividends could go up by as much as 160%, not just 50%.

Anonymous said...

You can do negative ads, but before that you have to have cred w/the public. White doesn't have that--people are tuning him out since he's 100% negative.

As Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn once said: any jackass can kick down a barn door. It takes a carpenter to build one.

Anonymous said...

Love the spin, MacDaddy. If nothing happens, the tax increase is the Republican's fault. It was their bill which has the sun-setting provision that results in the tax cuts expiring. Now if the Democrats produce a bill that retains the cuts for all income under $250,000, and Republicans block it because it doesn't extend the cuts for the portion of income above $250k, it will totally be the Repubs fault. (It bears repeating here since few on this blog seem to understand, that even if the tax cuts expire on income over $250k, the portion of income from $0 - $250k will still be taxed at the current rate even for those making millions, IF Rs don't block the upcoming Dem tax cut bill.)

Anonymous said...

11:36--I guess you failed Econ 101--maybe you need to talk with Richard Carter and get tutoring!

People reporting $251,000 and above on their returns are individuals who own small businesses. You increase their taxes, you reduce their ability to reinvest in the business or hire additional workers. Why is that so difficult for you to understand?

Anonymous said...

Interesting that even the Dem trolls here want to keep most of the Bush tax cuts in place.

Like an alcoholic though--who just has to have that next drink--the Dem trolls here still can't help wanting to raise some taxes on others.

Their tax hikes hit small business owners--real smart move when the economy is flat.

Anonymous said...

11:46--I guess you failed Reality 101-- The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities reports that only 3% of small businesses make over $250k, and these are mostly physician and attorney groups, so your concern is based on a fallacy.

Anonymous said...

Tom White can have fun explaining why he wants to cut Medicare by $500 billion--that is a crazy plan.

Anonymous said...

Interesting that White doesn't talk about his support for the stimulus plan in his TV ads.

Maybe because that's the one the Dems promised would keep unemployment at 8%--it is now 9.6%--total failure.

Anonymous said...

Anon at 11:59, define "small business" according to your Institute pals. Is the mom and pop trucking company in Seward that employs 60 people a small business, yes or no?

And the lady down the street who sells "Pampered Chef" or scented candles but employs no one -- is that a small business?

Finally, what percent of workers employed by "small business" are employed by those making more than $250,000 per year?

Macdaddy said...

Anon 11:36: What Democrat bill to extend part of the Bush tax cuts? That's a big if. My guess that the Democrats will be a lame duck Congress and they will then deliver a big F U to the American people by not bothering to do anything about the Bush tax cuts. They have had plenty of time to fix this. They just don't want to and they won't admit it.

Anonymous said...

MacDaddy, if you are correct and no bill is introduced, I'll quit commenting on your posts. But if you are wrong, will you promise to remove your blather from this site for a month or 2? You're insane if you think Democrats will simply let all of these tax cuts expire. But I wouldn't be surprised to see Republicans block a bill that doesn't retain the tax cuts on income above $250k and somehow blame this on Democrats.

Anonymous said...

12:26, a small business generally is one that reports business income on an individual tax return. It may be organized as an S-corp, LLC or partnership with the profit passing through to an individual's taxes (K-1 form). So your first example is probably one, second example is not. Now what many seem to be forgetting is that taxes are paid on profit, not revenues. Let's say one's company makes a 5% net margin (better than the one that employs me). Then taxes would only increase on the revenues above $5,000,000. You can spend your own time googling the answer to your last question. I've got a job to do.

Anonymous said...

1:17--there are about 50 Dems who signed a letter to Pelosi saying they want all of the tax cuts extended--that they would vote against any bill that tried to play class warfare.

who would be holding it up?

Anonymous said...

Well I went over to the Terry for Congress website and looked it over carefully. What's your point 11:27AM? Or, in the words of Dr. Phill: How's that workin for ya?

Anonymous said...

For those who don't have a clue on how a small business is most often defined by the SBA: Less than 500 employees or less than $21M. Now they also use NAIC's, which if you don't understand what they are you can google, and will at times modify the size standard to less than $6M.

So, most every company in Nebraska will fall within these parameters! Sure there are some which won't BUT a "vast majority" will.

And guess what? They will be paying more taxes! So they will hire less. Just drop by Valmont and check out their workforce.... or how about Behlen...... or Kawasaki...... of course the Omaha Sewer Seperation Project is going to be hiring soon. They are even advertising how you need NO experience, as the job will last 15 years and you can learn on the job!

While I applaude the opportunity to provide jobs can you imagine how 15 years of road work will impact Omaha?

Might as well build in Dodge, Washington, or Sarpy counties.

15 YEARS of Public Works....... wow what great timing to set this one off. Just when there is going to be a recall, new Mayor taxes, wheel taxes, and Tom White......

Got to hand it to the leaders in Omaha. They sure know how to build an economic strategy.

But I'm sure the Sarpy County folks are going to like it.

3:09, still only 3% of small businesses will make a profit of more than $250k. Most of you posters make the unsubstantiated claim that any increase in taxes will result in a precipitous drop in employment. What you seem to forget is that taxes are needed to pay for the government that we all use. And we have been borrowing from future earners for quite a while. So who pays? Should we raise taxes on low income people? Or those who have money and have seen their income soar and tax rates decrease the last decade. I grew up with a top marginal tax rate of 70% - 90%, and the economy did fine. You righties need to look at both sides of the economic equation. A business has to have customers that can afford to buy its products. Keep pushing income to the top and your customers won't have the income to buy from you. Every time the minimum wage is increased, companies (mine included) complain that they'll have to start layoffs. Never happens. Look at econ statistics after a min wage increase. The economy ALWAYS improves because the consumer has more money in which to buy a business' products.

Anonymous said...

Look at it from White's perspective though. He can't talk about jobs or the stimulus or healthcare--since the public knows their policies are a total failure in those areas.

Anon 3:26: The problem conservatives have is not paying taxes it's with paying for gargantuan government that is ineffective, job-killing, freedom-snuffing, wasteful, incompetent, insert suitable synonym here. Sure the economy, even with 70-90% marginal tax rates, did well after World War II with ours being the only economy standing, a baby boom, and tax loopholes out the wazoo. That no longer applies. (Of course, the economy wasn't doing so well in the 30's and early 40s when the marginal tax rate got jacked up from 25% to 70%). In the meantime, Obama spends, spends, and spends some more with nothing to show for it except a big bill. We all know that bill has to be paid and we will have to pay it. In the meantime, we need to quit digging the hole deeper. This is what the Democrats have failed to understand.

Anonymous said...

MacDaddy, I have no problem with the conservative viewpoint desiring smaller government. I may believe in the need for a larger govt than you would like due to our increasingly complex society and the dangerous power our large corporations are gaining (you should fear them more than the govt; can't vote them out), but that point can be rationally discussed. However there is a rationale behind the stimulus spending that any undergrad economics student understands and could explain to you. It's not just spending for the sake of spending. Our increasing debt load wouldn't be so bad if Bush and the Republicans hadn't frivolously spent so much on an unnecessary war. Never before had taxes been cut while going into a war. We should have been saving for the eventual rainy day and building budget surpluses that Clinton had started.

Anonymous said...

The debt increased from $10 trillion to $13 trillion under Obama and Pelosi. And, under their own economic projections it will go to $18 trillion by the end of the decade.

That's not sustainable--and it is one major reason Dems like White will lose on Nov. 2.
