Polling Ben Nelson: Trouble

Leavenworth Street has received new polling data on Democrat Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson.

And it ain’t pretty.

But first, we are unable to divulge the source of this poll.
If that bothers you, we are very sorry, and suggest you stop reading now and click back to Daily Kos.

OK?

Good.

Now, for the rest of you, it looks like this:

Nelson Favorable: 49%
Nelson Unfavorable: 47%

But here is the kicker kids: Over 50% of Ben Nelson’s Unfavorables are VERY Unfavorable.

Ugh.
It gets worse for the Senator.

Nelson Re-Elect: 34%
New Person: 61%

Sixty-one percent! For ANYONE! (Sit back down Chris Geary.)

But back on that, 41% of those who want a “New Person” say that they “Definitely want a new person”.

How’s that for a starting place for a challenger?
To quote an unnamed source, “That kind of intensity makes pollsters wet their pants.”

To put this in perspective against, say, someone else who was polled recently, let’s compare this to the recent Rasmussen poll on Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman:

Heineman Favorable: 73%
Nelson Favorable: 49%

Heineman Unfavorable: 25%
Nelson Unfavorable: 47%

2012 is a ways off.
But it’s not that far off, if ya know what we’re sayin’.

(Uh oh!  Watch out for a barrage of new Nelson spots during the Idaho game!)

Yeah, but 2012 is FAR ENOUGH to get a GOOD candidate for U.S. Senate. Perhaps the Libertarians will come up with someone, or perhaps Heineman or Nelson will encounter a real challenger during the primaries...

Anonymous said...

HA! Well what can he expect?

Oh you should have seen him at the Husker Game last Saturday. He is working on his next run already. I suppose he is concerned with the way he looks as it was obvious he had recently had a chemical peel done. His face looked pretty weired to be honest. Yet I guess when you have an ego like his and are ultra vain, a chem peel is ok. Judas how messed up is it for a guy who is like almost 70 to get comsmetic surgery? He was looking like Michale Jackson.

Maybe he wanted a smooth complexion for RETIREMENT!

Nelson or Heineman? I think I know who you mean...just wanted to be sure.

ANGRY DEMOCRAT said...

I am hoping that a true "DEMOCRAT" will step up and run against Nelson in the primary.

At least they would be a true democrat and not one that only listens to his party when "HE" needs us.

Not sure who at at this point...wonder what Anne Boyle will do after November...

Nelson won't get a primary challenger for 2 reasons: 1. There's no Nebraska Dem powerful enough to take him on 2. He won't run for re-election.

Having said that, I'm a little surprised his favorables are that high. Maybe the poll was paid for by Nelson.

Pol Observor said...

If memory serves me about Nelson he had favorables in the 70's most of his career. Below 50% is the kiss of death. Also remember Nelson had high favorables when Chuck Hagel Kicked his butt. The reelect number is right on target.

Bennie already has his successor picked and is grooming her within his shadow government ... Bold Nebraska. He'll be installing Tom White as the new Chair of the NDP with Ian Russell as its Executive Director right after TW's failed attempt at getting into Congress. Bennie's war chest is still full of millions, and he can buy all the clout he needs to accomplish all this and more. He might vacate the office, but make no mistake, he'll still be calling all the shots in the NDP, just as he always has.

Anonymous said...

Does that mean that Ian will no longer be a parasite to the Nebraska tax payers? What's the base pay for NDP's executive director? Will poor Ian have to resort to billing the party extra for anything he does? It would probably make more sense to turn the NDP over to Jane Kleeb. Donors would understand that Jane takes her cut off the top. With Ian all the funds will be going into his pocket out the back door.

The trend will be favorable from here to 2012 for Nelson and not so good for Heineman.
The health care law's benefits will be apparent by 2012 and who knows if Heineman will have fixed the states budget mess by then.
To me the Governor has peaked in popularity and Nelson is coming up from the bottom.
Should be a great battle, but bet on the incumbent Nelson in 2012.

I saw Ben Nelson's face too, whew! I mean the dude could have stayed in and watched the game on TV. At least until his face didn't look like a two tone paint job, baby pink and tobacco/leather brown isn't a good look.

I'm trying to figure out what a "true Democrat" is...so maybe someone can help me...

Is a 'true Democrat' a dyed-in-the-wool liberal?

Is a 'true Democrat' someone who puts his/her party's concern above all other considerations?

Is a 'true Democrat' someone who votes their own preference before that of his/her constituency?

Here's what I want in a challenger to Nelson. I don't want a "true Democrat" or a "true Republican"...I want someone who listens to his/her constituency, who recognizes the needs of his/her constituency, and who works to fulfill those needs.

Grundle King said...

"The health care law's benefits will be apparent by 2012 and who knows if Heineman will have fixed the states budget mess by then."

Holy crap.

The health care law and fixing the budget "mess" are mutually exclusive.

The 'benefits' for me, as you describe them, appear to be that I can now only put a maximum of $2500 in my flexible medical spending account, and my maximum out of pocket expenses have doubled. HOORAY!!!

Indeed my view of Nelson is changing as we speak...it's gotten much worse.

I know everyone is pushing Heineman. I'd like to see Bruning. Better yet? Shane Osborn. THAT would be interesting.

Don't forget that you can no longer use your med-flex account to pay for over the counter drugs. Hence we have prescription fish oil. Let that sink in. Fish oil. By prescription. All because of Obamacare. I wonder what other work arounds will pop up. That Obamacare is one fantastic piece of legislation!

I think the Gov. should be worried about his 25% disapproval. I think the mask is starting to come off and Nebraskans are begining to understand what an ill-tempered bully who belittles others to get his way he is. Take it from an insider, he does not know how to managage people let alone the state. And I will have to remain anonymous or else risk having some piece of office furniture thrown at me.

Desperate Democrats said...

To Anonymous @201. Your an Insider. The only thing you are inside is Bold Nebraska's offices. If you have such an issue with the Governor, quit!!!! 25% disapproval of a well known major office holder is the gold standard for popularity. That 25% is probably the same number of people that Drink the Kleeb Kool-Aid and think Meister would be a good governor.

Anonymous said...

I just returned from a Better Business lunch where Heineman was the key note speaker. He entered and exited to the Go Big Red fight song. Talked about the football and volleyball programs. Then spoke of Nebraskans being better than everyone else. Why does everyone buy his shtick?

Anonymous said...

To Anon 2:43

I don't even know where the Bold NE offices are even at. Thanks for the job advice. I don't think I will quit - I think I can continue to improve the lives of Nebraskans in spite of inept management. Just need to duck wehn the chairs start flying.

Grundle King-- Tom White is a good Democrat-- despite his attempts to conceal it. There you go.

I too saw Ben this weekend, and I didn't know men (especially men his age) had chemical peels, so I assumed it was some health issue.

Weird.

If I were Governor Glad Happy the 25% disapproval is not a gold standard. He can't golly, shuck, gee his way around without full accounting for a ballooning debt.

What has he done for me lately?
Not sure.

How about Mike Foley...the current State Auditor as a potential Nelson replacement? He was busy pointing out some of Nebraska's spending inconsistencies in gov't...and was doing a good job...but then went quiet...someone reign him in?

Of all the Republican's wannabe's either in denial or thinking about running against Nelson...Foley stands out as a no B.S. kind of person to me. At least that's the way it appears. The current list of potentials from Heineman down just aren't impressing me.

On the Dem side...Scott Kleeb is hoping Cap and Tax is resurrected so he can come and blow hot air through your house so he is out as a Primary contender against Nelson...Bob Kerrey is looking for a new gig and wants to return to the "Good Life"...there's a possibility. Then there is always closet Democrat Chuck Hagel.

Anonymous said...

According to the little one there is no defecit. Have heard the Gov. has added to his stump speech, that the $700 M projected hole is a creation of the media. say what?? Then he smiles and cues the Husker fight song again.

Anonymous said...

Foley is trying to figure out why our state employee health care costs are the worst in the country. Good for him. Bu the Gov. just locks the door and pretends it's not a problem. Just another example of his management skills. The state is getting ripped by Blue Cross Blue Sheild at the expense of the taxpayers.

Grundle King said...

I think the whole 25% disapproval for Heineman thing is overblown due to the following reasons.

1. Nebraska's population is about 1.75 million

2. Lincoln, Omaha, and their surrounding areas account for about 50% of that population

3. In the 2008 presidential election, Obama won both Lancaster and Douglas Counties with slightly over 50% of the vote

4. 50% of 50% is 25%...and any self-respecting Obama voter naturally disapproves of Heineman on principle alone.

Ergo, I conclude that the 25% who disapprove of Heineman are Obama voters living in Lancaster and Douglas counties...bitterly clinging to the religion of the Obamagod.

Anonymous said...

GK that's a bit of overanalysis. Maybe 25% are paying attention and see what a horrible governor Heine is.

Grundle King said...

I suppose that's possible...and I suppose that, in the same vein, Obama's 46% disapproval rate (according to Gallup)is due to that fact that only 46% of the American people are paying attention and see what a horrible President he is.

Gosh, thanks for clearing that up!

Emerging issue on the horizon: Will those who have sued Nebraska over in-state tuition rates given to children of illegal aliens seek to have the birth certificate of Nebraska Red-Shirt Freshman starting husker qb Taylor Martinez, released. How many birthers in Nebraska are wondering this and where does Heineman stand on these unanswered questions?

Oh mander said...

You can't reveal the source? Why not? What happened to the transparency that you all demand from organizations like Bold Nebraska? Why should we trust a mysterious poll? If I wanted unsubstantiated info I'd watch Fox News. (I know, I know, "Then go watch Fox News!" right?)

PS - No one reads Kos. I don't know how that became synonymous with progressive points of view.

State Worker said...

Anon 3:44pm..Not entirely true....Foley wants the personal medical records of all state employees to find out why our costs are so high...he doesn't need to know personal information. Any auditor will tell you he can find out the same information even if personal information is extracted. It is not his, or anyones, business what health issues or procedures I have. I am already ticked that he had access to my prescription records...no one's business.

And please don't give me the "I pay your salary with my taxes" argument...I pay taxes too. Therefore I am contributing to my own salary. AND to follow the logic of those who say government workers should accept wage freezes, furloughs, etc just like a private business...well, a private business wouldn't release personal medical records...so why should state government?

Anonymous said...

You conservatives don't get it. They are making fun of you on the racial profile of a Husker player. In other words don't see a name and just assume. Or in other words don't be so right wing about it. Pretty funny. Conservatives love to be bigots unless it hurts them personally.

Anonymous said...

Anon 8:25 a.m. is spot on. LMAO that el professor de derechas and others couldn't figure it out.
Had I wished to play with the clan (or should I have used a k instead of a c), I could have continued in a similar vain:

Sure, he has an anglo first name, but this begs the question of citizenship. Did either of his parents come here in order to give birth just so he could have US citizenship (which I won't concede until he finally shows us his birth certificate and Glen Beck can attest to its authenticity)? Should we amend the constitution just as a precaution? Would he qualify for an H1 visa? Is he a part of a vast hispanic sleeper cell.
I could go on and on. . .
You right wingers are too easy.

NE Voter said...

I can't say until Taylor Martinez produces his birth certificate. Until then, there will be a perpetual cloud over his legitimacy.

However, if after producing his birth certificate, if I am personally, subjectively satisfied with its authenticity, I will embrace him as a fellow natural born citizen.

Until then, he's just another potential anchor baby.

Ben Nelson this morning has the single lamest letter I've ever seen printed in the LJS. He's now claiming the term 'Cornhusker Kickback' denigrates the UNL athletic department! And there is the usual excuse that the kickback itself, though it was quite explicitly written for Nebraska, was a 'placeholder' for everybody'. Riiiight.

Right Wing Professor said...

No, you liberals don't get the point. Unlike you, conservatives don't assume that because somebody has a hispanic surname, they might be illegal. We are the party of Linda Chavez and Marco Rubio and Miguel Estrada, the guy you filibustered to prevent there being a conservative hispanic judge on the appeals court.

RWP so many hispanics are republicans. They just love the Arizona law, the Fremont law. RWP have you ever been right about anything? Laugh, Laugh, Laugh.

Right Wing Professor said...

So at least two of Arizona's five congressional Democrats support AZ SB 1070. Do they hate hispanics too, anonymous coward @ 10:01

Anonymous said...

At least now it's clear why the left says the AZ law will lead to profiling-- they think everyone sees the world in the race-based mindset they have. How offensive is it to drag Taylor Martinez into this? And it's because Obama has behaved in turn arrogantly and bizarrely when the issue of his birth location has been raised to the point that it remains an issue for some. Jeez-- how many times will the "smartest man ever to be president" have to bungle another issue in his trademark, ham-handed fashion before the left starts to doubt him even a little?

Progressives are so sensitive. You all might want to run down to Wal Mart and buy some larger briefs...your current ones are obviously affecting your circulation. If you didn't see the tongue-in-cheek in anon 4:20's post you need to check into the Helen Keller SOTB.

Taylor Martinez will do just fine...although the accolades spewing from the media and the rest of the Husker myopic are grossly premature...but typical.

Now...down to the detail. It's that swarthy Carl Pellini that is the real threat to white bread Nebraskans.

Just watch him...he's always in the background...never loses it like fair skinned brother Bo (all a facade to protect Carl...Bo is a good soldier.) And we all know about the affair with the big NU donor's wife that was immediately shed like water off a ducks back.

I tell ya...Carl Pellini is the brain trust...he runs the show...he is the Godfather. Mess with him and it's a late night visit from the cement overshoe committee. Anybody seen his birth certificate?

Why is it that "progressives" are always the first to bring up race or scream someone is a bigot??? Guilt??? Loosen your shorts and take a chill pill dudes. In the meantime...keep one hand on your wallet at Memorial Stadium/Tom Osborne Field.

Anonymous said...

RWP, Democrats can pander too. Those 2 want to get reelected. I'm sure 100% of the AZ Republicans running for Congress support 1070. Anyone who things Dems are worse than Rs concerning racial profiling definitely has the blinders on. And now the "birther" controversy is Obama's fault? The delusions continue on this site, but it is good for a laugh.

This is just the dumbest joke. This crack about T Martinez isn't even the least bit funny. We have foreign athletes from throughout the world playing sports for Nebraska so even if Taylor was born in Tijuana, it wouldn't have any effect on his eligibility. And since he's on scholarship, there's no real issue about in-state tuition either. This feeble attempt at left-wing humor has no comedic value at all.

For clown fish, you all just aren't very funny.

I'm sure Charlie Jansen will still introduce a bill based on Fremont's hate ordinance for the entire state. There is no chance these laws will be upheld as they clearly violate the constitution.
