The Benator: Summer Lovin'

Ben Nelson's summer skirmish with The Left keeps us chuckling.

We like how The Lefties are coming into Nebraska screaming, "You know what? That Ben Nelson? Your Senator? He's CONSERVATIVE!"

(Of course they don't note that he's voting FOR Sotomayor...)

Did Nelson pay them off for these ads?

Let's see. Nelson says, "Whoa, slow down on this whole gotta solve one sixth of the economy by next week, plan."

And then The Libs run a one minute (!) TV ad with a guy with a problem with his health care, where The Leftists essentially shout,
"There you go! It's time to shut down the EVIL insurance industry! It's time for Socialism. And it needs to be finished yesterday! And Ben Nelson is standing in our way, Nebraska!"
Heck, it's gotten so "bad" that Mike Johanns has come to Nelson's defense.

So just to review. Nelson gets to:
  • Fight an Outside of Nebraska Leftists group;
  • Say slow down on crushing the economy and upturning your current health care system (to a Goverment that can't handle Cash For Clunkers);
  • Stick up for the Nebraska Insurance industry and all its employees;
  • Get a Nebraska Republican to vouch for him;
  • Have everybody think the Health Care plan runs through him.
How is this not a win-win-win-win-win for The Benator?

***

And then we continue to chuckle at our comrades over at another Nebraska blog who are getting pummeled by their Lefty coastal bloggers because they are perceived as Yes Men for E. Benjamin Nelson.

And the kids over there are shocked (SHOCKED!) to see the Liberals putting up ads that are cheap, unfair and tell half truths.

Guess what? That's known as the Progressive (or Lefty or Liberal or whatever it is that you're calling yourselves these days) Playbook.

Weird to see it thrown at one of YOUR guys (or YOU), huh?

***

We were remiss last week in not referring you to Don Walton's review of UNO Prof Adkin's book about the NE-2 2008 race.

In it, Adkins gives a nice review of the race and summarizes a number of statistics found after the smoke cleared.

A couple of notes:

1) While Jim Esch benefited greatly from the influx of Obama dollars into the Second District, many Obama voters simply didn't bother to check the box for Esch or Congressman Lee Terry.

And in precincts where that happened at a higher rate, Terry did much better. (Uh oh, you mean Barrack Obama won't be on the ballot in 2010? Wonder what will happen...)

2) Terry's camp put together a field organization that walked the precints where Terry won or lost in 2006 by a very close margin.

So what happened in 2008? Terry increased his average win in those 118 precincts by almost a full percentage point.

In other words, while all you saw back in 2008 were stories about the Obama volunteers, it was the Lee Terry walkers who made the real difference in the 2008 Congressional race.

***

By the way, according to the FEC.gov site, a quick view of Lee Terry's fundraising in the 2008 campaign, and the 2010 campaign, at comparable times:

July 2007 Quarterly filing (for 2008 race): $263,449
July 2009 Quarterly filing (for 2010 race): $295,848

Oh, and let us say again, for those who seem to be all hot and bothered about this race:
Barrack Obama ain't on the ballot.

***

He may not be getting the big National press (yet), but the above mentioned Senator Mike Johanns continues to pound away in the Senate.

You can read here about him taking it to Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack on the "climate bill".

And our favorite MJ quote from that hearing:
"It’s no consolation to stand with one foot in the campfire and one in the ice bucket and say, ‘on average, I’m in good shape.’"
***

And finally, the Jays getting a 6'11" center from Iowa?
Yes please.

**Update 8/10/09**

Thanks to Don Walton of the LJS for the mention in his column.

Wow Sweeper...this post is a lot to digest...

Seems 'ol Earmark lives in an alternate universe. Just yesterday his colleague John McCain said he would vote against Sotomayor's appointment based on views entirely opposite of why Ben was voting for her. Who's right? Ben is such a loser.

Johanns defense of Nelson may come back to bite him.

Re: the Third. Adrian Smith held a teleconference last week...over 1700 in attendance...93 percent said barked a resounding no to Obama's health care plan. I wonder what the number would be in the 2nd or 1st?

I wonder if Ben does have the cojones to hold a town hall if he will bring thick necked body guards like Specter and Sebilius??? I would think Nebraskans would not resort ot shout downs...but then again C & T...health care in any way shape or form...and card check are hot button issues that a large percentage of Nebraskans are against. At least with the girls I hang out with.

And to Doc...if we ignore CU basketball that only leaves us to dwell on UNL Basketball...the thought of that makes me shudder.

I wouldn't be surprised if SEIU or ACORN mounts an official campaign against that other "progressive" blog. It's fun to watch the marxists mix it up with run-of-the-mill starry eyed socialists. Ben made his millions in the health insurance biz and still gets huge campaign money from them...he will back mandatory individual coverage but won't back selling across state lines, easier association access to group plans, etc. What is really needed is to remove all state/federal barriers to competition in the health insurance industry.
BTW, MattSak is a very conservative young guy with lots of energy and a good message...but no money or professional campaign organization behind him. You can bet he'd never make the House Dems top 10 Fav Republicans list.

How appropriate that Lee Terry has appeared on the cover of Madd Magazine for over 25 years.

The actions of congress over the past 10 years are driving all of us insane. Spend, spend, spend.

When will the second district stand up and say ENOUGH!

We need a leader who isn't afraid to speak out and oppose a spending bill.

I've voted for the congressman 5 times and he's failed miserably.

It's time for leadership from the 2nd district.

I don't care if it's Tom White, this upstart Matt Sak, or someone else. Who is willing to be a leader. It's not Lee Terry.

I don't think you can just say "Obama ain't on the ballot" and think that somehow translates into Lee Terry being in good shape.

It would be a better argument to say what his favs/unfavs are.

As a supporter of Lee - I still think we have to be realistic about a few things- 1)Lee had a close race with JIM ESCH!, 2)his fundraising numbers, regardless of how they compare to previous cycles, are less than stellar, 3) voter registration trends are not in his favor, 4) he's not doing anything to elevate his stature or inspire anyone.

So maybe Obama being on the ballot is the defining factor. But maybe not.

Anon 12:32

No need to catch my breath, I am in very good shape. You are the one that needs to reread, a "Darkhorse getting into the race", would hurt Matty more than the sitting Congressman. Challengers can usually pull away 10 to 15 percent of the vote in a Primary. Even if they each get that amount, that still puts them in 2nd and 3rd. (And challengers get no help from Local, State, or National Parties.)

Remember, I's and D's can't vote in our Republican Primary.

Carry on.

Bottom of the Fifth said...

In light of the recent Gallup poll, I have the following analysis.

1. The state Democratic party needs to improve its credibility.

2. Without a public face for the party (No Nelson does not count), it cannot be competitive in statewide races.

3. What makes Nebraska competitive is that independents have abandoned the Republican party.

4. However, indepedents tend to break in favor of Republican on election day.

5. The Democrats cannot even generate turnout. See Jim Esch

The best indication of the Democrats’ moribund state is that no one is lining up to run for statewide office. Politicians know which way the wind blows.

All that being said, I believe Tom White can and will win. Terry Lee is a backbencher of a minority party. He has absolutely no power and delivers nothing for the district or its constituents.

He knows it (why he is raising money earlier), his party know it (has a contender in the primary and is on the republican watch list), and the American people know it (why Tom White will win).

Anonymous said...

Okay, then let's speak ill of all the Democrats-or at least one.

Suttle, said Democrat, has announced that he will cut 100 civilian jobs this year to save 12 million dollars.

I did the math, then I checked it on an old fashioned calculator and found that the average civilian employee working for the city of Omaha is making $120,000 a year with benefits.

My guess is we could cut all of the 100 employees' benefits, not fire them and still save around 8.5million dollars. Plus, no one goes on unemployment.

BTW, has anyone calculated what effect not having employees (or police or fire staff) paying into the respective pensions will have on pensions that are already in trouble?

Will we be robbing Peter to pay Paul or just cutting off our noses to save our faces?

A Daubette said...

I'm re-reading this Suttle campaign mailing. I'll quote it for those of you that may not have read it.
But, I warn you! - it's extremely sickening, with regard to hearing the nightly news (and, hearing what he's up to EVERY NIGHT). It's getting old - real quick! Here goes
And, it shows a picture of him with his hands on his hips and downtown Omaha in the background.

"Jim Suttle will stop crime at it's roots, control government spending, and keep civility in City Hall."

"I'd appreciate your vote!" - Jim

"Jim Suttle Mayor"

Now, on the reverse side of this card it reads, (and, in bold print, mind you), "JIM SUTTLE: STONG ON ISSUES IMPORTANT TO YOU"

"FIGHTING CRIME AT ITS ROOTS THROUGH EDUCATION & JOB OPPORTUNITES" "Jim Suttle will take
action with our local schools, colleges, universities and trade unions to improve opportunities and access to job training. As Mayor, he'll put more police on the streets fighting gangs, support after school programs and work with schools & youth agencies to lower dropout & truancy rates."

"CONTROLLING GOVERNMENT SPENDING"
"Jim Suttle has a record of making government more efficient and effective. He'll control spending by modernizing city government and putting more servies online. He won't let city government return to the reckless spending in place in the early 1990's."

"KEEPING CIVILITY AT CITY HALL"
Mayor Fahey restored civility at City Hall after a period of constant infighting, partisan rhetoric, firings and even lie detector tests. Why would we ever go back? Instead, we'll continue civility in local government. Jim Suttle will provide steady leadership and real solutions."

Oh, my Gosh!!! What a jokester Suttle is...

You guys can read through it and pick it apart, comparing this and what he said while campaigning to what we're hearing him say now !!!

There's alot of broken campaign promises, did I say promises?
Hmm, I meant, lies !!! If, it wasn't so dissappointing for the Omaha citizen's, it would be hilarious.

He evidently forgot his promises, and, while campaigning maybe believed his own lies, who knows? What a doofess !!! This man has earned and is worthy of a RECALL!! He's a loose canon. I shutter to think of any more damages he may create.

Anonymous said...

Please don't hold Jim suttle to those campaign promises, Matt samp made them.

A Daubette said...

So, you guys... HAVE FUN AND ALOT OF GOOD LAUGHS WITH THIS !!! It could be re-worded to what we now know as the REAL TRUTH about Mayor Moron!!!

For instance, with Suttle as mayor there IS likely to be ALOT more crime and violence in Omaha. I could have sworn that I heard yesterday on the news, that he is grounding the police helicopter and not going to put anymore more policmen on the streets. BUT, that's NOT what his campaign card reads !!!

Plus, he's creating havoc down at city hall. Not, civility !!!

And, what did he say about he's going to "create more jobs"? And, about "trade unions"? I could have sworn that's not what I just heard on the news yesterday. Didn't he yesterday say that he's getting rid of 130 (civilian) positions, which are "union."

And, exactly what did he mean by controlling spending??? He's the only one down in city hall that is "recklessly" spending taxpayer money. And, didn't he just hire his cronies and give them huge pay increases? And, at nearly double what the last mayor was paying? And, what about that $55,000 @ 24% interest "RED" SUV for himself, that he spent of the taxpayers money. ***So now, we've got "THAT" SOB ...riding around in... "OUR" SUV ... LOL

AND, is his ideal of "supporting after school programs" for children, why he closed down Sun Dawgs??? His shortening library hours and staff and closing swimming pools, and golf courses how he intends to "lower dropout & truancy rates" and, keep children off the streets and out of gangs???

Again, to quote part of Suttle's campaign mailing. "Jim Suttle will provide steady leadership and real solutions." Oh, YEAH... WHEN ???

P.S. Jim...
Aren't you still, "Stong On Issues Important To Us?"

If you were... you'd step down... and let somebody else that knows what they are doing take over as mayor... you are in WAY over your head !!!!!

A Daubette said...

To Anon. @ 1:55 AM:

Well then, that proves another point
that Suttle is NOT competent to be mayor, nor, a good business man... because, he IS responsible for all and, anything that comes out of his office under his name. That's just the way it is, and, there are no excuses, no sweeping things under the rug, nor, blaming anyone else. I rest my case !!!

Any truth to the rumor thatObama is coming to Omaha to raise funds for White?

Who was that masked marvel? WTG Sweeper...but to have Walton agree with you could be the kiss of death in some circles.

As for the entire article... Walton's colors stand out enough to see which way he leans. "Why can't we have a civil and factual debate?" Because most people realize what kind of smokescreen snow-job is going on with Obamacare.

Johanns is making 11 appearances while he is on break...I missed the part that said Nelson is even making one. Went to his web-site...nothing. There was a story about his long concern...and lengthy chronological time-line ...with the Omaha VA Hospital and it infrastructural deficiencies... but he didn't point them out after all these months of study and deep concern. There was another story about his penchant to be DC's notorious prankster.

Sorry...I don't need the Joker running around DC representing me...I want someone who actually works to earn their pay that hard working underpaid Nebraska taxpayers dole out each April 15h...someone that actually makes an appearance with the broad range of people he supposedly represents...not just his turkey hunting pals behind the iron gate.

Now THERE is something that we can agree on!

BTO...

You and I in agreement...wow...two kisses of death in one day.

I drove through Holdrege a couple times last month...I didn't see you on a street corner with a "Will Work For..." sign. You must be doing ok after the "shake up."

1/3rd I like 'em shaken, not stirred. I'm doing fine and busier than a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.

A Daubette,
Tell you what, theoretically your now the mayor. Balance the budget, but dont cut the pool or the library or the close any golf courses and dont delay the police class. Figure out how to balance the budget and do all of the above at the same time.

P.S. BTW, you cant raise the property taxes or make a garbage fee or make a entertainment tax. And you have to do it all without making any enemies... Godd luck.

*Good luck

Close a golf course and this site is filled with angry posts claiming the ending of civilization.

Close a library and lay off over 130 people without severence which will have real consequences for many real families. . . crickets.

You stay classy Omaha.

One Out In The Third: Senator Nelson had two public healthcare forums last week, in Omaha and Lincoln. Both were well attended and while he probably only answered questions for an hour at each one, they were both written up extensively in the OWH and LJS. This week he was having healthcare meetings in North Platte, Kearney, Norfolk and South Sioux City. His Omaha and Lincoln meetings were put out in a press release from his office on Aug. 17th. Towards the end of that week I read about the others that were coming up this week. Assume he has heard from a lot of citizens at all the meetings as Omaha and Lincoln were packed with over-flow crowds listening outside the venues.
