Memorial Day Weekend 2009

As we get ready to bust out for the weekend...

How did we know the College Humor thing was going to come up again?
As noted by the OWH, the state vote counters on the new (gawd awful) license plates are now looking at recounting, based on the CollegeHumor.com's intervention.

As noted on their site:
The state government claims that our votes weren't counted, but it's pretty clear that no one would vote for that power-point-presentation worthy design because they liked it. They also claim that Collegehumor votes came in evenly over all the choices. We ruin a lot of polls in the hotlinks section. They usually display the results, and I can assure you that, that never happens.
Will this end?

**UPDATE at 11:25am**

And, they changed their mind. They're announcing that they're going with the Meadowlark plate -- like we had suggested all along.
***

Lee Terry was recently noted as a "House Heavyweight" on Telecom by the National Journal's Congress Daily.
More than two dozen other lawmakers and administration officials shine, and while they don't command as much attention as this power trio, they are well-positioned to leave their imprimatur on public policy...

Not One to Tarry: Rep. Lee Terry, R-Neb., joined with Boucher in co-sponsoring legislation to revamp the Universal Service Fund when Terry was in the majority. He's now returning the favor with Boucher in charge of the Communications subcommittee.
Rock on Lee.

***

We don't really get the point of it all, but Leavenworth Street is on Twitter, if you're into it and want to "follow" us (or whatever the hell the latest slang is for the latest web obsession).

We don't Tweet (shoot me) very often, but we do occasionally note new blog posts there, or updates. Frankly, it's just another hassle for another thing to update, but whatever.

***

Finally, this weekend, take a moment out of your Memorial Day to remember the men and women of our Armed Forces who let us sleep soundly in our hammocks because they're sleeping in tents or foxholes or in the sand.

God bless.

I dunno ... I kinda like the new license plates - clean, legible, not a lot of garpy impressionistic clutter in the background. Of course, I also like broccoli, and old Beverly Hillbillies episodes. Sue me.

At least we don't have like 27, 394,002 different license plates like our neighbors to the west. What's up with that? It's like everyone in Colorado has their own distinct license plate.

And finally ... does anyone think about what their license plate looks like for more than 18 seconds after they write the check to the DMV?

I vote we spend out time worrying about things that really trash the view ... like fat girls in Spandex, guys with no whiskers trying to sport facial hair, and body piercings that make kids look like a walking tackle box.

Priorities, people!

Judging by the number of vanity plates out there, I think Nebraskans care about their license plates a lot.

Hmmmmm, how DID StreetSweeper know that the collegehumor thing was going to come up again?? I wonder.....

Street Sweeper said...

Come on, spill! I want to know too!!!
(Hint: It's because I invented the internets.)

Anonymous said...

Heineman's communications shop totally mishandled this situation. Lying to the press about the effect of the college humor website was a stupid move that just dragged out the story.

Street Sweeper said...

There's no evidence that they were lying to the press. However, they did get poor info from their internet company.

Outsider said...

This is all Jim Suttle's fault!

Anonymous said...

"However, they did get poor info from their internet company."

How do you know that Street?

Anonymous said...

No, it's pretty obvious they didn't even bother to ask the internet company. In fact, until the World-Herald asked for the data from the internet company, they were content to let the result stand.

Hey, the World-Herald did some journalism for once! I guess they've reached their quota for the year.

Street Sweeper said...

From the OWH:

Hein said officials from Nebraska Interactive, the private company that manages the state's Web site, had provided the information she used for her earlier statements and company officials told her that, based on the consistent pattern of votes for the four plates coming from the comedy site, the hijacking effort had "no significant impact" on the vote.

Outsider,

I disagree. This isn't something that Suttle or the people watching his back could affect, and it does not benefit him directly...not to my knowledge anyway.

Intersting oppinion though. I like your moniker, and the movie even more. Stay golden Pony Boy.

I do like the first comment on todays post though.

Obama is a graduate of the Jimmy Carter school of national security/foreign relations. The way you win the war on terror is simple. You kill all the terrorists and their supporters wherever they may be. History proves that "they" will love us when we win...and winners write the history. It was hilarious that Obama was standing in front of the US Constitution while speaking. I've read it and never noticed the suicide pact language in it.

Insider,
"Nature's first green is gold". Movie was good, book was better IMO though.

I dont know what option we will have other than raising taxes. We as a society have to learn that we have to pay for what we want (on the city and federal level, the state is doing ok). This is deserved IMO. I believe spiking has been allowed for 20 some years i heard? Evidently its been a problem for some time now. Paying off the Qwest Center (which the voters approved a bond for) is part of it. And now this baseball stadium.

Im predicting 1 term for mayor Suttle, not because of some scandal or anything, but because he is going to have to make some tough decisions and tough decisions are never popular. He will probably have to raise taxes in some way, and then be voted out for raising taxes to be replaced by someone who keeps that taxes in place because they need to be there.

SS, you invented the internet? I thought it was invented by a tree, or at least somebody with personality of a tree. By the way, don't let Al see your post. He will be mad that you are taking credit.

Joking aside, because I expect Dem's will take offense. Gore did NOT invent the internet, however, he did play a role in it's expanse. It happens to be an area I know well, and I give credit where credit is due. I am sure this will fry the brains of certain people who have criticized my comments, but I distribute praise and criticism based on merit, not party lines.

Uncle W...

Good to see you are still kicking. I gave this selection process about 2 minutes of thought (more time than I should have allowed) and it came to me this isn't about designing and selecting a plate we can be proud of...it's about picking the butt-ugliest plate they can so everyone jumps on the more expensive vanity plates.

Didn't our Unicameral just pass legislation authorizing the creation of a plethora of "designer plates" for Nebraska?

It's all part of a marketing scheme by Governor Dave and his cronies. And if you have any dealings in Lincoln...you know that cronyism is the seed the Sower sows from atop our state capitol.

Pip said...

I want the old plates back!!! It made it so much easier. A rancher in the sandhills told me the lower the prefix, the less they could be trusted. He did make an exception for Custer, Hall, and Buffalo County. Truth be known, he never trusted anyone from a town that had a stoplight or McDonalds.

I wouldn't count Shane out yet.

"No charges have been filed against Osborne, who has been the state treasurer since 2006. Douglas County Sheriff's deputies said they investigated Teri Osborn's allegations of abuse and found them to be unsubstantiated. Investigators said she denied the abuse in an interview."

http://www.ketv.com/news/19570963/detail.html

Ringo Starr said...

KETV.com has just updated their story about Teri Osborn. Apparently the Douglas County Sheriff's office said flatly that Mrs. Osborn's claims were "unsubstantiated" and that she "denied abuse" when interviewed.

You Dems need to check all the facts before you start sharpening your knives.

This woman sounds very unstable. I seriously doubt Shane Osborn rigged his house with video cameras in order to watch her and I doubt even further that he hired "U.S. spies to discredit her."

One word: insane.

Anonymous said...

Prayers for the Osborn kids, it's hard enough to go through a situation like this without it all taking place in the public's eye

bob said...

The bird & weed plate won. Second place was the dancing outhouse, followed by Herbie Husker getting a lethal injection. Herb looked happy right to the end.

Anonymous said...

Hey Ringo of 8:27 PM May 26th, what do the Democrats have to do with any of this? Not wise to blame the possible victim for looking "unstable" if the allegations are possibly true just as it is unwise to condemn anyone when nothing is proven.

Ringo Starr said...

To anon 9:46am: Yes, you're right. Claiming that someone has hired the professional spies of the CIA to conduct surveillance on a random person is completely and totally 100% stable and not at all delusional.

My most sincere apologies.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go put my tin-foil hat back on.

Anonymous said...

Not saying any of the allegations are true or not, but just because a victim "denies abuse" or the abuse is "unsubstantiated" certainly does not mean it never happened. I noticed in the KETV story it mentions she apparently sent pictures of her bruises to her friends as a "cry for help." I wonder if those will surface?

Anonymous said...

And Ringo Starr: yes, it sounds a little out there if ANYONE talks about CIA spies spying on her. But years of mental and/or physical abuse can do strange things to people. She's obviously paranoid about something. Maybe it's Shane that did this to her, maybe it's not.

NE Voter said...

Why is Douglas County Sheriff Tim Dunning commenting on the alleged Christmas Day beating that Mrs. Osborn states occured in MADISON County? He has no jurisdiction to investigate an assault alleged to have occured outside of Douglas County.

Wagon-circle much?

At this point, these are allegations. The hearing on the protection order will not establish whether or not the allegations are true. Instead, the judge will decide whether reasonable cause exists to grant the order. In the typical case, these orders are almost always granted.

Now let's examine the politics. If the allegations turn out to be true, Mr. Osborn will be under tremendous pressure from NE GOP/Heineman/et al. to resign his office. A resignation will allow Heineman to appoint a Treasurer who would serve the remaining term and, presumably, seek election to the post with a record unsullied by these types of allegations.

If Osborn refuses to resign and seeks re-election, he will surely be primaried by another Republican.

Biggest Winner: Jon Bruning, who will see a potential rival exit the stage.

auf Wieder-Shane.

Anonymous said...

Would that be a teeny, tiny foil hat for what triggers your awful thoughts Ringo?

Interested said...

I think you Osborne detractors are going to eat crow. Have you read the protection order affidavit? Do you know if anyone has a history of mental illness? Do you know who called the press to be at the court house? Who is living with Shane's wife now? I think we all need to take a deep breath and let this play out. If Shane did wrong it will come out. If the allegations are not true then he will loook like a victim and recieve the public's sympathy.

Anonymous said...

I agree Interested, let the Judge figure this out. It wouldn't be the first time someone made a false abuse allegation against a public figure.

Anonymous said...

Agreed 8:24...let the judge figure it out. 99.9% of the time public figures lie through their teeth.

However, at times, I have to rule by law than what I truly know as the real truth.

Anonymous said...

I wonder how the cameras showed up to Court at the same time the protection order was filed...hmmm Mrs Osborne had the press called on this, plain and simple. Anyone notice her boyfriend hanging around??? This situation really smells really fishy to me.

Cathy said...

Yes, I think she smells pretty fishy about this whole allegation deal against him. If she has a boyfriend, maybe, it's her way out. Or, maybe, she's just a NUT!!
Or, maybe she's a Manic Depressant (Bi-Polar) person. But, the whole deal does sound pretty fishy.

Heard on the news today, they just passed a NEW LAW that if anyone makes any unsubstantiated(untruthful) allegations, that can not be backed by truth they could have reprecusions and face prison time. What timing and how ironic that it's in today's news. Huh?Maybe, she (or her atty) heard the new NEWS and she'll need to back off. Unless, she likes orange and wants to write her boyfriend from behind closed doors (bars).

Cathy said...

As far as bruises, gosh, I've fell down some stairs a time or two and gotten bruises myself.

BUT... IF, I had a cheating spouse I'd maybe want to cause a few bruises on them, too !!!

Atleast, he didn't kill her !!! So, he's probably not all bad.

And, what does this have to do with political affiliations, anyway? Human affiliations, YES, but, political affiliation, NO.

Wake Up Demwits!!!

This Osborne thing looks like a set up. Her allegations are months old. According to Mrs Osborne the Feds are spying on her. She called the press to the Protection Order Hearing and BROUGHT HER DAUGHTER to the Court and subjected her to the Cameras. I'm sorry but that is psychologically damaging to a child. Is this woman mentally stable???? Should she have custody if she filed a false report?

Anonymous said...

She does not sound too stable to me either.

But, she needs to back off because they are now passing that new law against FALSIFYING allegations in regards to restraining/potection orders filed, or there is a long vacation being given to the ones complaining/falsifying. She may wind up making our new license plates. lol

People who cry wolf hurt those women that are actually abused. I hope she is telling the truth. If she isn't they should throw the book at her.

Anonymous said...

Wow. Lots of anger towards Mrs. Osborn. If she was abused, you all should be ashamed of yourselves.

Anonymous said...

OBVIOUSLY there are a lot of people commenting about something they know NOTHING about.

The Osbornes should not have this playing out in the media, but as an elected official, there really isn't much choice.

FYI, to all you fools, the 11 year old is not a girl. If there was a daughter with her at the courthouse she is a toddler and where was she suppose to leave her, at home by herself?

No one knows if the ex boyfriend from 12 years ago is living with her or just stayed over night while picking up his child for visitation that he has a right to because he let Shane adopt him? (I have to admit, this is a little weird for someone who is separated from their spouse.)

There seems to be A LOT of questions out there that 2 judges (or more) will have to get the real answers to. How about we all back off and leave the family alone for a while.

In the meantime, let's pray that the allegations by both of them turn out to be false. A spouse should feel safe in their home and a parent should have a sense of safety and security for all of his/her children while they are away from them.

NOW, can we get back to the political "Hay of the Day"?

Omaha resident said...

Mrs. Osborne's stunt is over. It looks like Shane has requested her Psychiatric records and served subpeona on her mental health providor. His attorney wouldn't have made the request unless there is an issue there.

In the know said...

Folks put 2 and 2 together. Shane's adopted 11 year old son's father is back with mom. This guy has no rights to his biological son. If Shane is painted as an abuser, Mrs. Osborne gets full custody and gets Shane to release his rights to his adoptive son. Shane is tagged with spousal support and child support and because of the abuse his wife gets permission to leave Nebraska. She is not from here!!!

WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!

Anonymous said...

Leave it alone and let the Court and the Osbornes deal with this. They obviously all have people advising them and it is none of anyone else's business.

Scott Bluff said...

I wonder if you would all be saying the same thing if Shane were a Democrat?

Anonymous said...

Scott Bluff it makes no difference if he is an R or a D...If these acusations are proven false, legitimate claims of abuse may be set aside because a judge may think the abused is playing a game. It's time the Courts get tough on false claims.

Anonymous said...

He has requested the divorce file be sealed....why?...what does he want hidden from the public?

NE Voter said...

Both parties' legal moves are quite typical. From a litigation standpoint, once the wife landed a blow, Osborn had no choice but to counter-punch.

Will the Omaha World-Herald file a motion opposing the sealing of the court file? It always does in these situations where a public figure is involved. If it does not, the paper will have lost what little remains of its credibility.

Osborn's motion to obtain the wife's medical records is also typical, and will be granted by the judge. The order will include a protective order limiting the use of the confidential medical information (the records themselves will not be in the court file).

We will then have to see what Osborn leaks from his wife's records to strengthen his public image.

By the way, have you noticed the deafening silence from Osborn's fellow Republican elected officials? If the wife is "a liar" or "unstable," as many hysterical (and in some cases seemingly intoxicated) posters here have suggested, wouldn't you expect someone -- anyone, to speak out on Osborn's behalf?

Hmmmm.

auf Wieder-Shane!
