Hagel Plans

On Omaha KMTV Ch. 3's Thursday 6pm news, Joe Jordan reported that while Chuck Hagel won't reveal his Presidential plans until January 2007 at the earliest, two Hagel insiders said Hagel:
1) will NOT run for President, and

2) will NOT run for re-election to the U.S. Senate.

**Update 1/3/07**

Following is the transcript of Joe Jordan’s 12/28/06 story:

ACCORDING TO THE POLLS IF HE'S RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT NEBRASKA SENATOR CHUCK HAGEL HAS A LONG, LONG WAY TO GO.

OUTSIDE NEBRASKA IF VOTERS KNOW HAGEL AT ALL, IT’S FOR HIS CRITICISM OF THE WAR.

CRITICISM THAT'S BEEN NON-STOP.

Senator Chuck Hagel: (“Face the Nation) <"EVERY DAY IT GETS WORSE.">

EVEN IF HAGEL'S BEEN RIGHT, HIS ANTI-WAR TALK HAS INFURIATED MANY VOTERS.

LAST MONTH AN ELECTION DAY EXIT POLL FOUND ONLY 37 PER CENT OF NEBRASKA VOTERS WHO THOUGHT HAGEL WOULD MAKE A GOOD PRESIDENT.

HAGEL HAS DOWNPLAYED THAT POLL, AND EARLIER THIS MONTH WAS KEEPING HIS FUTURE TO HIMSELF.

(Joe Jordan) "DO YOU WANT TO BE PRESIDENT?

(Senator Chuck Hagel) I'LL TELL YOU ABOUT MY POLITICAL FUTURE WHEN I DECIDE IT, SOMETIME NEXT YEAR.

(Joe Jordan) SO YOU HAVEN'T MADE IT YET?

(Senator Chuck Hagel) I'LL LET YOU KNOW EARLY NEXT YEAR."

(Joe Jordan)

I'VE TALKED TO TWO SOURCES CLOSE TO HAGEL.

THEY TELL ME THEY THINK THAT IN THE END HAGEL WON'T RUN FOR THE WHITE HOUSE, AND WON'T RUN FOR RE-ELECTION TO THE SENATE.

THEY BOTH BELIEVE THAT AFTER 12 YEARS ON CAPITOL HILL, HAGEL IS READY TO LEAVE POLITICS BEHIND.

REPORTING LIVE JOE JORDAN ACTION THREE NEWS.

And welcome to our national audience interested in Hagel's plans! For more info on who may compete for Hagel's Senate seat in 2008, visit our post on that topic here.

And the wheels continue to turn.
See you next year!

If the Hagel "insiders" are correct, you can imagine Daub, Ricketts and Bruning are going to have a very busy New Year weekend working the phones.

Thanks to OmaSteak as well for sending in an alert on this story.

Don't count on the reliability of Joe's report.

I certainly hope that the insiders are wrong, as Senator Hagel would make for an excellent candidate in the 2008 Presidential race.

If he opts out it will be a sad day.

always thought senator hagel was one of the more honest on the repug side. whenever he spoke always tried to listen.

Does this have anything to do with Chucks interest in ES&S touch screen voting systems? Just asking...

That's too bad. A genuine Republican war hero who wasn't beholden to the christian right wing. God bless, Senator.

Shoot. The only Republican I can stand these days, and he's hanging it up.

Do not count Nagel, the former president of ES&S voting machines who was elected in a stunning upset by a Nebraskans using ES&S voting machines out.

Perhaps Dick Cheney will grow weary and resign when the investigations begin and the spickets are turned off from the US treasury to his corporate buddies.

Perhaps Bush will simply appoint Nagel as Vice President, giving him an easier shot at President in 2008.

I think this is terrific news because the more radical the Republican party becomes the better for democracy. As relative moderates abandon ship, the ship will go down faster. The GOP is shaping up to be a permanent minority party, rooted in the south. The GOP's xenophobia, racism, homophobia, contempt for the poor, war-mongering, whacko financial policies, anti-worker sentiment, and everything else despicable that characterizes them will be more and more obvious. It's nonsense to lament Hagel's leaving as a loss of "moderation" in the party. People like him have had no influence whatsoever, and it's time for Olympia Snow to smell the coffee.

Hagel was a cosponsor of S. 2611 a path to legalization, welfare and non-deportable crime. We gain by his leaving. He deserves now to get corporate board ships, speaking fees, and trips to China for having helped China get our night vision technology through H-1B's and grad students.

That is sold by China to Iran and Pakistan who supply it to the insurgents to use to maim and kill our troops. Hagel should get at least a million dollars a year for providing that service to China and the insurgents fighting our troops.

I was so hoping he'd run. It's a sad day if he's deciding not to, just when we need him most.

GOOD RIDDANCE. Now maybe he'll come clean with how he STOLE THE OFFICE in the first place with the MACHINES HE OWNS. That would maybe grant him some forgiveness, altho he should still be EXECUTED for TREASON.

but how will he ever get on the sunday talk shows now? not that he did anything before, but at least he had a title.

My! Input from kooks make blogging much more fun!

Who let goofy Charlie Matulka (the Neb. Dems' 2002 Senate candidate) post so many comments about voting machines?

Folks, this is what happens when the Michael Moore leftists get a taste of power.

Just as bouncers at every pub should keep out ugly people, blog site managers should screen for certifiable Fruit Loops.

At least the GOP tries to keep its nuts in the closet. Happy 2007!

Hey don't blame the Blog Bouncer! This is still America, and he didn't exactly yell "fire". And we're pretty comfortable that readers can distinguish the kooks...

There goes the only republican to speak honestly about Iraq. but, yeah, he prob stole the office through his ES&S voting machine connections. no worries, the gop will find some other criminal to replace him. they never seem to run out . . .

Yeah, a Republican like Hagel getting elected in Nebraska. It MUST have been robbery!

I figured you guys would be away from the computer lab while grade school is off for the holidays...

I'm no fan of Sen. Hagel. For a Republican, he makes a pretty good Democrat. Isn't there some liberal college out east that needs a new president?

It sounds like someone's sister Holly chimed in on December 30th.

Don Kuhns, you know better than to think that comment would get published here. Try again.

If Hagel runs for anything again, including dog catcher, he will not get the support from Omaha voters which will be critical to his getting any nomination. I for one will not vote for him even in a senate primary. He has said that he supports the cheap packing house labor from the illegal aliens crossing our borders and he is not for securing our borders. He supported a bill to paid these illegals SS and Medicare. If he has said legal aliens were entitle I would have no bitch. Also, he does not support the COMMANDER IN CHIEF OF OUR ARMED FORCES and he being an xmarine. I can not support someone who does not have the kuhunas support the US. He will have to look elsewhere for his votes. If he wants to be a democrat, then he should joint the Jackass party where he belongs with all the other Jackasses.
