Terry vs White on the TV

Tom White and Lee Terry have competing ads up right now. We have ‘em both here for you to view.

First White’s:

And Terry’s response:

Here’s the thing: This hasn’t exactly been a theme of Tom White’s all campaign long. It’s just sort of throw up there. “We need to have our annual senior-scare spot! Get a generic one from the DCCC!”

And then Terry whacks White with the point that White supports the law that cuts Medicare.

And last time we checked, these type of spots didn’t get Jim Esch over the hump either.

So we just chock this up to the sort of desperation mode the White camp is in. Nothing is sticking, so go to some old trope that everyone else has always used.

Honestly, we expected more and better from the White camp than this. Something original. Something hard-hitting and relevant. And at least consistent with the campaign they have been running.

Not this.

Oh well.

Joe Jordan takes stock of last night’s debate between Terry and White, and calls it a clear win for Terry.

See his report here:

Did Tom White not know the story of him flying lobbyists across the state would not come up? Again, no response prepared? Brother.

Wierd closing by White last night--and then that he literally ran out of the room to avoid reporters. Trying to duck questions about his lobbying ties and plane flights?

It never fails--when a Democrat is losing a race they throw out the senior scare ad. Tired and lame.

The prob for White though is his support of Obamacare and the $500 billion cut to Medicare to partially fund it.

No wonder White never mentions healthcare anymore. That's ok, Terry's campaign will do it for him. lol

Total snooze-fest posing as a debate. Neither candidate addressing serious issues with real solutions. Just more same-old-same-old stuff. A liberal afraid to be liberal and a desperate incumbent back-bencher praying he doesn't have to face a real conservative challenge in 2012. Still ends up with Terry beating White with a bigger margin than last Terry-Esch campaign.

This whole race is a snore. What's Lee Terry worried about? White is obviously not up to the task.

Anonymous said...

Well, yeah those ads didn't get Jim Esch past the finish line, but you'd be wrong to suggest they didn't work. If they didn't, they wouldn't have run three separate ads on privatization between Esch and the DCCC.

Esch didn't win because Terry's attack ads worked better. White's likely in a bigger hole than Esch was this time in 2008.

Anonymous said...

The problem for White is he is having to attack Terry directly, rather than having the DCCC do it (like they did in 2008 for Esch).

They've dumped White.

It just has the feel that White and Ian viewed old commericals by Nancy Thompson and Esch and then picked a few to duplicate--the issues they're pushing are basically the same old attacks.

Didn't work then. Won't work now.

We don't have to feel sorry for White. He will still have his planes in Iowa, and his millions in the bank. Not to mention he will have the time to defend his clients.

Nothing to see here keep moving

Terry wins, again.

When will the D's in Douglas County put a candidate forward who can appeal to a less radical element? Someone like Ashford, Council, or Cornett?

Just saying.

Anonymous said...

Oh big deal. So White has a plane and it flies. Maybe he can fly in a clue for Lee Terry that he hasn't done anything in 12 years of having the chance.

Anonymous said...

Terry "hasn't done anything..." That's your argument for White?

What are you doing for White here in this room? You stand there quivering in anger, ready to blow a gasket.

Get hold of yourself, shut off your PC, go outside and get a few votes for your guy.

Anonymous said...

to 11:57: Thanks Dr. Phil. Kind of sensitive a little like your guy Terry. Good luck with that.

Anonymous said...

Or, you know, more likely, the same issue resonates against Terry in their polling as it did for Thompson and Esch. Hardly surprising to see the same themes again and again. Thompson didn't do it very well. Esch and White have.

12:13--all of the attacks have one thing in common--they are retreads from 04 and 08--they didn't work.

Insane.

Definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and hoping for a different result.

Anonymous said...

If White is doing so well--then why did the DCCC blow him off?

So what if Tom White has 2 planes hangared in Council Bluffs. He worked hard to earn those planes.

Macdaddy said...

I'm sure Tom White did work hard to earn those planes, if by working hard you mean convincing a judge to force other people to give up their money under threat of jail. In any event, does Tom White think the people of the CD2 are too incompetent to properly care for his planes? Maybe he thinks they are not offering a good value for the money. Maybe there are tax incentives for him to keep his planes there. No, I'm sure it's just more convenient for him to drive over to Council Bluffs to hop on board. Or maybe that's where all his long-time friends who just also happen to be lobbyists live.

Don't attack me for riding in tom whites planes! Do you know how scary it is up there when he's drunk an angry?

Mile High Club said...

Tom White is well known to "entertain" lobbyists in his "Mile High Club" he holds in his large private plane. The bar is always open at 25,000 ft.

Anonymous said...

Kim Robak's firm has given White money. Did she ride on the plane too.

Anonymous said...

Anon 11:27- Ashford and Cornett are both Republicans. Brenda Council is one of the most liberal senators we have- a lot more radical than White. Bad examples.

I agree Terry will win again, and with a larger margin than the last election. White has nowhere near the base that Esch had.

Anonymous said...

Ashford and Cornett are barely R's. Council almost, by 400 or so votes, won a Mayoral election. She would beat the pants off of Ernie to be sure.

So,,,,,,,

The sad thing is that the only people that Tom white sues, when he sues, are the taxpayers. Look it up, he sues the City of Omaha and Douglas County regularly. Who do you think pays for those settlements?

BTW, most of them are quick settlements based on the self insured risk assessment-you know, like the one they used for that sexual harassment suit

Anyone know how much cash Tom White has made suing the University of Nebraska-Lincoln or has the case not been settled out of court yet? And yes, taxpayers will be on the hook for Tom White's fees and expenses for that one too!

Undecided said...

I was at the debate last night and though White brought up some interesting points. For example, earlier in the debate Terry spoke about defeding the First Amendment and the freedom of the press. Then, Terry critizes White for airing an ad (the comely lobbyist) that simply reported on the news headlines. If you notice, from that commericial, White adds no commentary he simply shows clips of media footage.

Ask most Democratic insiders their opinion of Abbie Cornett, and you're not likely to get a glowing review.

Switching parties tends to do that.

Anonymous said...

Exellent mailer by Terry--you read it and quickly realize why White never mentions his support for ObamaCare.

Anonymous said...

oh damn another restless night of worrying about Tom White having a plane in Iowa. It's soooooo pertinent to my life.

As for his success in suing and the taxpayers picking up the tab?
Maybe if the defendent wasn't negligent or incompetent in the first place there wouldn't be the expense for the taxpayers in the first place. Forgive him for daring to defend someone against what should have been competence or doing a better job at their tax paid job.

Anonymous said...

Yep, when a person doesn't get the shift they want at the jail, it's always about "who" they are, never about whether they were a decent employee.

As far as the plane, no body gives a rat's ass about his airplane or the fact that he has 2 of them. What the people want to know is:

Why doesn't he pay taxes in Nebraska on them?

and

How cozy is he with the Lobbyists that he flies around in them with AND why a State Senator should be taking ANY Lobbyists out to a "Field Hearing" (aren't those fact finders for the elected officials?) some 300 miles from his legislative district in Benson?

For a man that is supposedly a man of his people, those questions shouldn't be too hard for him to answer without a script, should they?

Anonymous said...

Are you saying that Tom White switched Parties?! Is that why no one likes him?

Anonymous said...

Cliff Herd asks today in the Public Pulse where Omaha's elected leaders are? Why haven't they stepped up to defend Mayor Suttle against this recall effort?

Yes, Cliff, I too want to know why State Senator Tom White has not stepped up to defend Mayor Suttle against all these recallers?

Maybe he and Brad Ashford are sitting at the Country Club working out the details as we speak?

Anonymous said...

Good question about Kim Robak. Tom White should disclose his cozy relationship with lobbyists. Was that a gift from Tom White on the "lobbyists" airfare. Who paid for the golf!!!

Anonymous said...

White said they didn't golf. I just want to know why a State Senator is providing his airplane to take lobbyists to a Field Hearing.

Can someone please tell me what a Field Hearing is? I thought it was a meeting for elected officials to gather on sight information about an issue to be voted upon by them.

So, why all the lobbyists? I thought Tom White hated lobbyists and felt they were something to be scraped off the bottom of a lawyer's shoe?

Anonymous said...

She's too smart, and way too professional, to go anywhere with Tom White.

Anonymous said...

Anon 6:25 is right, she's way to smart to hang out with White or Terry for that matter.

Anonymous said...

Actually, Ms. Robak very professionally represents the University. Maybe she visited with Congressman Terry when UNL was trying to get the earmark for algae research as an energy resource?

Anonymous said...

Robak wouldn't have a snack with with White.

The issue with the planes is he works so hard to put out an image of being a regular, working class, guy. He is anything but.

He is losing, and losing big.

Now all We The People need to do is hunker down and ride out the stuff that hits the fan storm.

Oh and there is some talk around town about the peeps who are buying up all the flip video cams? Seems there is going to be a whole lot of filming going on Nov 2!

Of course it won't matter much here on LWS, as most who are on here aren't of concern:)

"must be nice to have a congressional pension" I'd prefer a professional ambulance chaser's retirement plan, instead.

Anonymous said...

Actually, the cash is in civil rights suits against local governments. they are cheap to start and easy to settle quick. Ambulance chasers have to get all those medical reports and prove injuries.

Last day to buy time...

Tomorrow (Friday) really tells you if the DCCC or anyone else is going to come into NE2 and help White. It is the deadline to buy time for next week--the final full week of the race. Anyone want to bet whether the DCCC buys time...

Could that email that Ian Russel sent out last night be any more stupidly cartoonish?

In typical Ian Russel idiot fashion, he overdramatically played up a boring answer by Terry listing the four main options we have in making social security solvent, raising the tax rate, raising the tax ceiling, changing the age or reducing benefits... going after that makes about as much sense as attacking a barista for telling you what your options are for flavors in a cappuccino.

Anonymous said...

Cliff Herd? He's as relevant as when Dan Welch beat whooped his sorry council seat.

Anonymous said...

Sounds like Robak's firm has a long history of female lobbyists being very friendly with democrat state senators.

Anonymous said...

Enough bagging on women doing a man's job. For anyone to insinuate that a female cannot have a meeting with a male without her including a sexual favor or two is such bull shit!

If a male has a meeting with a married female, does everyone assume she is trying to screw him and her husband? Enough of this.

From here forward anyone that continues on this line of crap deserves whatever happens to them in Hell.
