Why Blue Hens scare Ben Nelson

A Tea-Party supported candidate, Christine O’Donnell, won the Delaware Republican U.S. Senate primary last night against a much better funded, establishment, but much less conservative, RINO-labeled, Rep. Mike Castle.

So why should that have Senator Ben Nelson worried?

Well, it’s like this:

Nelson (not unlike current Democrat 2nd District House candidate, Tom White) has always tried to position himself as a “conservative”. He votes that way on occasion, and certainly invokes the ire of many Democrats for that proclivity.

But if Nelson were a Republican, and voted the same way -- with Harry Reid, for ObamaCare, for the various stimuli packages -- he’d be labeled as a RINO. He maybe could get away with that in some place like, say Delaware, but he could never last, voting as a RINO Republican, in Nebraska.

But back to Delaware. Delawarians...Delawareites...Blue Henners -- the majority of GOP ones -- showed that they are sick and tired of the RINOs. They want someone who will vote conservatively and stop the government-knows-all policies that Castle was pushing. They pushed away the RINO for the real deal (and did not even care about those who said O’Donnell can’t win in November).

Well, back in Nebraska, Nelson has always depended on those who were into him being a RINO. There are plenty of Nebraska Democrats and Independents who would be hard core Republicans on the East coast. And Nelson, as a Democrat, has catered to that crowd.

But that group, nationally, has diminished. Those who want conservatives, are tired of the RINOs -- or better CINOs. Nelson’s career has depended on those who want the CINOs. But Delaware, and much of the national mood that fostered the Tea Party movement, displays that “Toss the CINOs” groundswell.

The poll from last week that showed over 60% want Nelson out confirms that as well. One only has to ask -- "If they’re not going to take it in Delaware, why would they take it in Nebraska."

Nelson is VERY luck he is not up this year.

Will that mood change in two years?

Nelson is hoping so.

***

Oh, and that same analysis goes for the Omaha Mayor Suttle Recall movement as well.

And if you haven’t read it, Joe Jordan gives a nice analysis of what is going on there over at Nebraska Watchdog.

***

Not that we really needed them to tell us, but interesting that the oil pipeline company took the time to call out the political tactics of Bold Nebraska and their liberal enviro brethren.

The oil companies -- backed by UNO analysts -- show that Bold and the others are frightened to stand on their own arguments to make their case. Instead they have to inflate the own support (oh, by the way, it ain’t an election) with bogus poll questions.

The funny thing is, if they were smart they’d show that GOP Senator Mike Johanns is reasonably questioning the pipeline and what is going on to put it in place. Oh, but that would be pointing out that an eveeeel Republican is the voice of reason in this scenario, and they simply can’t have that.

The pipeline, as it is currently envisioned, may or may not be a good idea.

But reasonable people now know that if you are looking for balanced, informed, and unbiased information, you sure as hell don’t go to Bold Nebraska.

Oh, and that goes for pretty much anything else they're pushing.

But you probably already knew that.

Bold Nebraska was created to support the Kleebs and their Kool-Aid Drinking friends. They have not many any impact here in Nebraska and the people that troll their website were Tree-huggers anyway. Heinemann and terry will be reelected and Jane will have her bills paid to the end of the year.

It was sure funny to see the Delaware Republican Party staple their nuts to their desk. Bye Bye Senate takeover, the Tea Party saves healthcare reform!!

That's right!

I love how Malinda's "Bold Roundup" talks about how extending tax cuts will increase the deficit... except for the fact the GOP plans on slashing spending. What a maroon.

As a side note, I plan on starting my own line of BBQ sauce, right here in Lincoln, NE. The name? Bold Nebraska..

Oh shoot, we weren't able to manipulate enough voters long enough to overtake the House and Senate in 2010 and kill the healthcare reform policy that'll destroy the current system we've developed over the last 40 years by hiring lobbyists to grease crooked politicians from both parties. By 2012 Americans will see the reality of healthcare reform and they'll vote against any of our politicians that are on the take to sabotage reform. Another multi-billion dollar marketing campaign of falsehoods certainly won't help help us now. Our little niche of legally denying coverage to people who bought our policies has been ruined!

Ben Nelson was on KFAB yesterday. His vote for Obamacare was mentioned and he about blew a gasket. He's toast, even if he is the last one to realize it.

Anonymous said...

Ben Nelson only votes conservatively when he feels he needs to in order to appease Nebraska voters so long as there's no personal cost to him in doing so. And he'll make a big show of it and act like he's standing on such big principles.

Buuuuuut ... when the chips are really down and his vote actually matters, he votes for Obamacare. That's all you need to know about Ben Nelson.

Like all University of Nebraska faculty members, I'm covered by Blue Cross-Blue Shield, a not-for-profit organization. In fact, a lot of the insurance industry is not for profit. So this troll, who claims the industry is made up of profiteers, is just ignorant.

By the way, grad. student premiums at UNL went up 10% for next year; probably mostly because of ObamaCare. I can't wait to see how much faculty and staff premiums go up.

Obama is so scared of how big the increases will be, coming just before the election, he sicced his botox-addicted attack dog Kathleen Sebelius on the industry to try to prevent them from raising premiums. Problem is, when you have an insurance pool to be covered, and you have to increase coverage, there's no alternative than to raise premiums. ECON 101.

RWP,

A 1 minute google search shows Cleve Killingsworth, the CEO of BCBS of Massachusetts, made 4.3 million in 2009. Yeah, he's a real Mother Theresa isn't he? Please show me a government official that makes that much from medicare or medicaid.

Right Wing Professor shows his stupidity once again. BCBS is a federation of 39 separate health insurance organizations and companies. In 1994 BCBS allowed their licensees to be for-profit organizations.

Can this guy be any dumber?

Right Wing Professor said...

First, BCBS Massachusetts has nothing to do with Nebraska. The CEO of Nebraska BCBS makes a total of about $230,000 a year, less than Harvey Perlman, less than JB Milliken, and a heck of a lot less than Bo Pelini.

Second, $4.3 million is peanuts, anyway -- less than half the median compensation of the CEOs in the S&P 500.

And third, while BCBS certainly allows for-profit insurance companies in the federation, BCBS Nebraska is not-for-profit. It is a mutual. I don't expect anonymous coward @3:54 to know what a mutual insurance company is, but he can ask his mom to look it up for him.

And finally, yes, I could be dumber, Anonymous Coward @ 3:54. I could be you. Chicken$hit AND stupid is no way to go through life.

That is the problem when money like this is peanuts. Some people are way over paid. Nothing wrong with making a profit. But no reason to go over board. People who honor money over people lifes and health are not good people. A major reason why there was new health care law.

Wow check out the comments on the last blog, Right Wing Professor totally got owned. RWP claims he's never given any winks or nods to the birther/obama-is-a-muslim crowd but someone pointed out the July24th L-Street blog called "Dems Invade Columbus" from 3:33 PM, July 25, 2010 where RWP describes President Obama as a "slightly mysterious half black guy."

I agree with the other poster, if Obama is "mysterious" please tell us what makes him mysterious?

Embarrassed Husker said...

Sad is the attempt to divert the conversation. Whatever RWP is or isn't has nothing to do with the topic.

Ben Nelson is scared, he should be, he will be out of office soon.

White won't be elected because of who HE is. Any message he might have carried get's lost in him.

I doubt 2 years is going to be long enough for Nelson to wash the stink off.

but now back to the diversion channel and......... wait nobody outside this blog is really listening.

The distraction is the Republican party's alone. They want everyone to forget about the disastrous state of affairs they left this country in and focus on Obama being a muslim or not being a legal citizen. The lies get repeated so many times that eventually college professors start repeating them. George Orwell would have been fascinated by these times.

Nelson is running out of time and options. Should the Republicans retake Congress, he will need to toe the GOP line if he wants any hope of re-election. That won't go over well with his base. Meanwhile, if Heineman were to prove that he understands what is making people so angry and cut the size of the Nebraska government, he will get to make the argument that he's the real deal and not some double-talking phony like Nelson.

If the Senate stays in Dem hands, he's in real trouble. Reid, or whoever, will cut him off big time should he stray too far from the party line, especially if he's the last vote needed. Then you may see another reprise of his Obamacare vote with the expected post-vote dissembling.

You want to openly question President Obama's citizenship

Seriously, see a doctor, guy. Nobody can have this level of cognitive impairment and be healthy. There may still be time to at least limit the damage.

If MCain or any other Republican could have proved Obama was not a citizen they would have jumped on that like a rich person looking for a tax break. But I don't blame you. On behalf of progressives everywhere, thank you Christine O'Donnell, and thank you Tea Party. She cannot win. Changing gears - I will now be happy to sign the Suttle recall petition ever since he convinced his whipping boy Ben Gray to bow to CVS and the corporate powers that be. I can think of a few Dundee residents that will be happy to do the same. This D-bag is as good as recalled.

Anonymous said...

I'll take this one:

What makes Obama "mysterious", is that so many uninformed AND informed voters followed him so blindly in last cycle's elections.

What makes him half black, is the undisputed fact that his mother and her parents were both white and his father, by his own statements is a black African.

Macdaddy said...

Anon 10:00: You have no solutions to the problems you want to lay at the Republicans' feet, so do us a favor, admit you can't do it and step aside. Let somebody else try. Ain't nothing permanent in politics, even after we elected The Ones We Have Been Waiting For.

GeosUser said...

Oh Mander,
Suttle didn't convince Ben Gray to change his vote on CVS' Dundee location, I'd bet CVS' money to some Ben Gray-related campaign fund or "cause/community effort" changed Ben's vote. It's likely that Ben's friends/family directly benefit from a CVS shakedown...err donation. Sort of like Suttle putting him on the OHA Board was tied to his early vocal support of the police contract, higher taxes, etc.

Oh mander said...

Anon 11:40 - I am not one of the dumbasses of which you speak because I didn't vote for Suttle. You call me an idiot and yet you are the one running your mouth without knowing the facts.

As for the jobs that CVS will bring - Dundee is not anti-CVS, we are anti-CVS in this location. We simply want them to build somewhere else, which they are doing anyways. So fear not, all those low-wage jobs that will run the higher earning mom-and-pops out of business are safe. Furthermore, adding another chain of pharmacies will not create an influx in the number of prescriptions written in Omaha. Their successes will come at the expense of other businesses, so the increase in jobs will be temporary at best.

Name calling makes your argument weaker. A complete lack of facts makes it irrelavent.

Oh mander said...

And what is your point? You have no previous point because you are anonymous!

What a laugh. There's nothing "mysterious" about Obama. Hell, the guy published 2 books about himself before the election detailing his life story.

That dog won't hunt.

Anonymous said...

As I previously stated, the "mysterious" part is not about President Obama, it is about why the Hell so many voters blindly followed him. It is the mystery that surrounds him to this day-especially in light of the way he has managed the Executive Branch so far.

I am not a birther, nor do I think he is Muslim, it is my belief that if a Christian calls themselves a Christian, then they must be, because any non-Christian would not be caught dead calling themselves a Christian.

Religion should be for oneself. Not a merit badge of sorts, anyway.

Mander, those are pretty strong accusations of bribery you are flailing about. You should probably check that at the door as I am quite certain you are not as anonymous as you may think that you are.

Jobs for the whole community-GREAT!

Many insurance plans do require you to use a specific pharmacy, if there is no brick and mortar, then you are required to work via mail order. I know for a fact that 5 of my friends are required to use CVS as their pharmacy in their plan.

Last, were you this bothered by having another run down bar in your 'hood, back in the day?

Anon 12:35 - I did not make any accusations of bribery. You are confusing me with GeoUser. I simply implied that Gray's sudden change of heart was suspicious, and I'd say that to his face if I ever met him.

The 49'r has not been a problem for the neighborhood since I have lived in it. And this is not about what the 49'r is or was, its about the bigger picture.

And again, Dundee is not anti-CVS. Soon there will be plenty of other locations where your friends can get their pills.

They're not typos. Typos are instances where one hits the wrong key accidentally. These are instances where you don't know how to spell, punctuate or use correct grammar.

Right Wing Professor said...

So why is there such rage among the lefties here? This is my theory.

Most Dems aren't Dems because they've read John Rawls and have thought deeply about the Politics of Identity. A few have, but not most. They're Dems because they have serious doubts about their own self-worth. They've figured out they'll never be Bill Gates or Albert Einstein or Mahatma Gandhi, and it grates on them. So they'll settle for the next best thing. Not being erudite or tolerant or thoughtful or generous themselves, they'll join what they think is the club for tolerant, erudite, thoughtful, generous people. And then they can look down on all the people who aren't in the club as intolerant, uneducated, misogynist, moneygrubbing etc.. It's a strategem as old as human society. You can spend other people's money, and bask in the glow of their achievements, as if it were your own! No, you didn't have to deal with sexism, or put your ass on the line for civil rights, but you feel like you were part of the Struggle!

And they would be happy as clams, except, now and again, someone comes along who disrupts their comfortable view of themselves. A confident, outspoken, conservative woman perhaps, or a conservative African American, or a right-wing college professor -- someone who damn well ought to be in their club, because 'diverse', smart people are supposed to be in it. And that enrages them. It challenges their self image. And so their vilest attacks are reserved for the Clarence Thomases, the Sarah Palins, the Newt Gingriches -- those they regard as renegades.

And the really kewl thing is, when they stumble upon a renegade, the rules of the club no longer apply. They're not really tolerant, they're often misogynist pigs, and they're sometimes resentful of people's better education, but they can't express all those emotions within the club -- until Sarah Palin comes along. Then they can unleash all that pent up resentment against women in general on her in particular, and still be in the Tolerant Club. Likewise, Gingrich taught history at college, and they
struggled to get through high school, but they can call him stupid, because he's a Republican, and the rules say it's OK. And all those nasty racist feelings -- why unleash them on Justice Thomas! That Uncle Tom, that Affirmative Action recipient, that uppity...oh, wait, better back off a little there.

Of course, most conservatives aren't Albert Einsteins or Bill Gates either. But they have a more realistic view of themselves, and so it doesn't bother them. They'll do the best they can, and it will be enough for them.

RWP I don't know who you think I am. I don't really care. But not all republicans are like you. Talk politics and stop bashing people. Maybe they will stop bashing you.

The Democrats have Bud Pettigrew. The Republicans have Gerard S. Harbison. I believe we can safely call it a draw.

RWP, I'm a bit confused. Since I don't comment about others' behavior on this blog, then I'm siding with "pond scum"? And this is despicable because I pretend to know better? For the record, I don't always agree with the way in which people on "my side" present their case, but it's not my job to comment on this. Have you ever crticized any of the juvenile, asinine posts made on "your side"? I haven't seen it. You seem to be promoting a double standard which is a bit elitist of you.

TedK.

You can try playing me for a fool, but don't expect me to play with you. I've said what I wanted to say. You read it, and understood it.

And that's all, folks. Too much noise here, not enough signal.

TedK said...

RWP, I'm not playing you for a fool. I just don't understand the double standard you are promoting. Guess since I'm a liberal (a moderate in most other states) the standards are higher for me.

Libs always get that NPR liberal tone when they are losing an argument and try that "better" than you crap. Then they will start throwing fits. They aren't used to having someone stand up to them. Just like a bully.

So RWP you are good with me, a conservative republican.

Lets talk about theoriginal post. Sweeper, that was blogging jujitsu to morph Ben Nelson into a Republican so that you could portray him as afraid of the tea party. Interesting. But you forgot to mention one thing: so far the only incumbents to lose to the tea party are Republicans. Not Democrats, DINOs or CINOs. Just sayin...

And did you call O'Donnell the 'real deal"? Tell me, is it a conservative principle to perpetually run for office so that you can raise money and use it to pay your mortgage, your living expenses and other personal expenses? I don't know if it is conservative living so to speak, but I'm pretty sure it's illegal.

As for Nelson being "conservative". He consistently ranks more conservative in legilsative analysis than a handful of Republicans.

Hey Pol Observer: Maybe Nebraska's poor moved to Iowa because they could get some help there. Ever thought of that?

RWP - ponderthis: you hate ben nelson so much - why don't you quit your cushy job abd forfeit your fat salary at the U in protest over the U's insistence on working with Ben Nelson to procure and spend federal earmarks on research and facilities at all the campuses? Why don't you disclose if you get any research funds from earmarks?

The way I ssee it Ben Nelson was doing as well as he could and then he gave the 60th vote to advance ObamaCare. Now he is toast.

It's not unlike any relationship where one person cheats and the trust is foreever broken.

The divorce will be final in 2012!

I am starting to think you should run against Sen. Nelson, or even Pres. Obama for that matter. COnsidering how hot and bothered some of the trolls are about you, your past and nitpicking your statements, they must see you as a serious threat!

Keep up the fight!

Shoe,

First, THANK YOU for not furthering the inane threads above. Really folks, you come to a political blog, and that's what you want to bitch about? Bring it up a notch, would you?

Back to Shoe:
1) Few, or probably zero Tea Partiers ran in Dem primaries. But you knew that.

2) And no, I didn't call O'Donnell the real deal (which you know), I said that's what people want. I have no idea whether she is a True Conservative (whomever may be defining that term), but voters said that her opponent was NOT.

3) I'm not comparing Nelson to Maine Republicans. I'm comparing him to Nebraskans (which, I was very clear about, but you knew that). By that standard, Nelson is in trouble.

And you, and he, knows it.

Nelson is down but not out. Maybe the amnesia will start to affect the left, as well.

Macdaddy said...

I think Nelson doesn't survive in 2012 and not because he voted for Obamacare. I think he could have made that case and over time people would have accepted it. Instead he went out and secured a bribe that brought dishonor to Nebraska, then when caught, he panicked and started pointing fingers everywhere else and spinning stories about his own involvement. It's really unbelievable that a man his age would try to get away with something like that. How can you be that old and so insecure about your political philosophy? Nelson's actions yanked the mask off and what was underneath wasn't pretty.

You are out of your mind. Your thumbnail take on Nelson is just lunacy.

Nelson was responding to Heineman's begging when he went and fought against the unfunded mandates - when he couldn't get the feds to cover the whole bill off the bat he took the Nebraska deal - addressed the gov's problem and then would address the unfunded mandates as the bill proceeded. When he looked behind him after he got the deal for Nebraska - he was alone in the foxhole and the governor was pissing into it.

Sure the deal has gotten plenty of negative press coverage and has severely damaged Nelson politically -but all this pretending that he took a bribe (he never got paid for anything you realize of course) is nonsense.

What is embarassing is the behavior of the governor throughout the process. Asking for, rejecting, then asking for again the funding. Using federal funds to balance his budget while he decries federal spending. Playing politics with $100 million for health care for unemployed and low income Nebraskans.

Maybe this costs Nelson his senate seat. But ultimately, with 30 million Americans benefitting from the new health law - poeple without health care and without a way to get it - I think we know Nelson did the right thing.

All the political posturing and partisan attacks -lead by governor deficit - is just that, politics. Nelson dids what he has always done - he tried his best to do what is best for Nebraska. He may have been wrong on the politics - but he was right to do what he did.

Sweeper - yeah I know all those things. As did you before you posted. And Nelson STILL isn't a Republican (at least party registration-wise anyway.) Why not do a post about how Chuck Hagel, had he not quit on Nebraska and then flamed out so spectacularly on the presidential stage, would also (and more likely than Nelson) be sweating getting tea bagged by some unknown pretend constitutional scholar a la O'Donnell.

And for the record you did call her the real deal - are these not your words? "They pushed away the RINO for the real deal..."

Street Sweeper said...

Shoe,

I'm only stating with the DE voters are saying. Frankly, for all I know she is a card carrying Bull-Mooser.

And, no one cares about Chuck Hagel. Last I checked, he wasn't up for re-election in 2012.

But nice distraction try.

(And be sure to read and comment in our new post!)

Macdaddy said...

Shoey, you could have called me crazy for saying that Nelson's vote for Obamacare isn't the reason he's toast in 2012. As for your contention that it wasn't a bribe, we now know that 1 million DSCC dollars came Nelson's way for an ad campaign to explain his vote: 2 years before he was up for re-election. It just defied any sort of logic that the national party would lay out that kind of cash with no election coming up. We also know that in his subsequent explanations of where the idea for the Corbnhusker Kickback came from, he changed his story several times with the most recent one blaming it on the Dude family. (Some Dude suggested it.)

As for Hagel, he dropped out because he was about to get Tea-Partied by Bruning who was gearing up to fish-slap him. Hagel wisely dropped out and Johanns slid in. Tough luck, Mr. AG, but your intentions were noted and appreciated.

Bottom line, though, Shoey is that Obamacare sucks, it will not do what it says it will do nor for the cost it was sold for. Someday, I won't hold my breath, Lefties such as yourself will realize that government cannot deliver.

Shoe, Nelson put too much stock in what his close political advisors were telling him on healthcare. While the ultimate "achievement" is at this time to your liking and Nelson's liking; (just wait for piecemeal repeal) he actually got screwed over by having advisors who were clueless about how Nebraskans would react to a government takeover of healthcare. Your house of cards on healthcare is collapsing, Nelson will lose (if he runs) and you can all go out feeling like you did the right thing. Except your guy, who was once respected in NE, is now spurned. What a way to end his political career.

How is that any worse that what you do, which is to excuse or ignore the bad behavior by your fellow libs because conservatives do it.

Yes, it's a vicious cycle...but if you think your best bet at ending the cycle is to act in an adversarial manner and castigate the other side, rather than talking to your own teammates, you are sorely mistaken.

Sorry about this if it's posted already, but even though I'm on your team, i wouldn't go so far as to equate Nelson to Castle. There is the fundamental difference of a RINO running as a R and a CINO running as a D. That is why Nelly has done so well thus far. Castle, for example, wouldn't be around today running as a D. The NDP won't run someone legit against him, and they he'll have all Ds and a few Rs in . He'll lose to Mr. Heineman, but it's not the same as Castle v. O'Donnell.
