Meister-Meister and the Trackers

Newer-ish news on the “who will” and “who won’t” of the Democrats for Governor.

KHAS and Joe Jordan are both reporting that lawyer Mike Meister of Scottsbluff is the latest to be considering a run against Dave Heineman.

Meister was the Dem nominee for Attorney General against Jon Bruning back in 2002 when Bruning was elected the youngest AG ever in the USA.

Since then, Meister apparently considered running for Congress in 2006 when Tom Osborne gave up his seat. (Democrat Scott Kleeb eventually lost to Congressman Adrian Smith for the 3rd District seat.)

We will have more on Meister if he confirms his interest.

***

And speaking of the Kleebs, KHAS has confirmed that neither Mr. nor Mrs. plans to run for Governor. (Whew! We were wondering when we would get word!)

Anthony Pura interviewed the Hastings Kleebs on the “issue”, basing his story on the musings of certain “blogs and gossip sites”. And he skims L. St. in his report. Without showing the name of the blog of course.

Oh, we’ve got our eyes on you, Anthony...

(And did you know that Scott Kleeb was providing a public service with his new little company? Why THANKS Scott! Thank you! WE should be paying YOU! Oh, wait...)

***
National Review Online’s Jim Geraghty notes,
(The Nebraska Democrats’) dilemma may be the strongest argument for amnesty for illegal immigrants, as they appear to have finally identified a job that an American won’t do.
Chuckle.

(And hey old Lakers’ campaign: Shut off your auto-emailer. Reporters are still receiving your July1st “newsletter” about why you want to be Governor...)

***

And, you really should listen to the interview by Jack and John on KLIN of Nebraska Democrat Chair Vic Covalt for his reasoning why there are no Democrats who want to run for Governor:

It doesn't pay enough.

Really.

You see, there are lots of Dems who make a half million dollars a year, and Governor is just too much of a pay cut.  If it paid the big bucks, there would be Democrat candidates in droves.

That's the reason.

That's your leader Nebraska Dems!  We're amazed that Vic can't find you a candidate!

***

And it’s summer campaign season, so let the stalking begin!

The Democrats and the Tom White for Congress campaign apparently have THREE stalkers following Congressman Lee Terry around at events.

Of course, while they’re busy following Lee, they are also blocking the views of people that would actually like to see the Congressman, and pursuing his wife and kids as well.

You stay classy out there, Democrats.

(Here is an idea: stalk some Dems who might want to run for Governor. Or Attorney General. Or Auditor...)

***

In the mean time, Tom White is refusing to state how he would vote on various bills in the House -- like the recent $34 billion unemployment benefits extension vote. White would like to convince you that he would have dived in an carved up the bill to his liking.

As Joe Jordan asked him, aren’t you the same guy who couldn't pass the sewer bill in the legislature?

***

And the Nebraska GOP reports that they will have one U.S. Senator Scott Brown of Massachusetts speaking at their convention in Fremont at the end of the month.

Brown will be in the state to thank Ben Nelson for the Cornhusker Kickback that infuriated so many Massachusetts voters and helped Brown to win “Ted Kennedy’s seat” in the Bay State.

(He’s not going to thank Nelson? Well, that’s O.K. He probably high-fives him in the Senate corridors.)

That should be a crowded speech at the convention.

We hope to be there.

***

And we have done our fair-share of knocking Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle, so let us give him a shout-out on his latest idea to legalize fireworks in Omaha.

(Of course this is about a two weeks late, but still.)

His point is that people fire them off anyway and no one enforces the current ban.  So why not sell them, tax them, educate people on safety, and everyone wins?

Of course, had a Republican suggested this, every Democrat would scream that the Mayor hates kids who blow off their hands.

Nonetheless, we give him a two bottle-rocket (hopefully not in the eyes) salute.

(Next up: Meth labs! We kid. We kid.)

***

We will be posting the July 4th Parade photos that we’ve received, next week. There is still time to submit your candidate’s shots!

Doesn't pay enough. Ha!

Maybe the Dems should get on the same page. Junior Senator Nordquist introduced an constitutional amendment to roll back the Governor's pay and put it in the consitution so the voters have to raise it. I think to like 85k.

Is it too low or too high?

Pol Observor said...

What is even more pathetic Sweeper is that if you look at it, The Dems really haven't had a candidate for Governor since 1982 (Bob Kerry). If you remember the party's candidate was Bill Hoppner in 1990 and Old Ben spent a million dollars in the primary and ran basically as a Republican on the issues and I'm not Kay Orr to get elected.

So really if you don't count Ben, Bob Kerry is the only real statewide candidate they have had in the last 30 years except for JJ Exom continuing his run from the 1970's.

The R's have owned the 1st and third CD forever and except for Peter Hoagland's 6 years, Daub, Christensen and Terry have had that 2nd CD seat for 24 of the last 30 years.

I can't even remember when the legislature was majority Dem.
(Anyone have an answer???)

So what's that leave the Dems with? Occupying the mayors offices in Lincoln and Omaha from time to time. Great record Nebraska Dems!!!!

You'd have to have your head examined to jump into the governor's race for the Dems at this time. 4 months to go and not one cent in donations. I know I offered to be the candidate, but after a session with my shrink and two sessions with my accountant, I decided that it didn't pay enough. Instead, I'm taking the filing fee and buying Powerball tickets since I'd have just as good a chance winning that as a Democrat beating Heineman this year.

I hear members of the Dem's leadership as well as Neb. dems and Lakers staffers traveled to Columbus today. Was there a meeting about running Raimondo for Governor?

Anonymous said...

I was wondering why no one was mentioning Tony Raimondo. Here's the thing though. Tony has never and can't talk like a Democrat. Wait, that's the kind of Democrat they all like...

As for Tom White, I just watched the Joe Jordan video on YouTube (thanks for the link SS). lolololololoololol!

The controls that Tom White wanted in TARP, were the controls that Congressman Terry demanded be put into the Bill with assurances from President Bush in a telephone call from the President, right here to Omaha, Nebraska, before the 2nd TARP vote. (check the OWH archives for that story)

The fact that the Democrats took control of all the purse strings a few weeks later seems to be the problem. Thank goodness Lee Terry was able to force the money to be divided into 3 pools, the 2nd and 3rd of which could not be spent without Congressional approval, otherwise that money would have all been handed out in the first few months.

Because of the requirement of a vote to release the funds, it has been much harder for the Dems to spend any additional funds from TARP-yet, without a single Republican vote of support, Tom White's Chief Cheerleader, Nancy Pelosi, has managed to lead her little lambs to slaughter every single time she wants to spend money.

From what I hear around Omaha and Lincoln, Nancy won't have any trouble getting Tom White to drink, her koolaid.

M. Lakers said...

Who is Tony Raimondo?

Pol Observer....you just pointed out exactly why this state is all messed up with high taxes, low wages, and losing population. It's been run and controlled by Republicans for DECADES. Scott Brown is a Republican that is all the Republicans care about . They don't vote to get rid of abortion. They need that issue to keep burning to get the middle class and the poor of Nebraska to vote against their own economic future. The Grand Old Petroleum (GOP) has been running the state of Nebraska into the ground. All of the screw ups for the last ten years plus have been on their watch. We rank last in almost every means a state can be judged when it comes to wages and job benefits. But they do a good job of complaining. They are number one in that.

Somebody should ask Scott Brown his views on the NEGOP's 2008 platform. Ya think he agrees?

"We believe that life begins at conception, and that all innocent human life is precious and should be protected. We support the reversal of Roe vs. Wade and an amendment to the United States Constitution banning abortions except those genuinely needed to save the life of the mother."

Let's talk sobriety. Let's talk Danielle Conrad being sober for over 3 years now, and Joe Kelly and his DWI conviction. Hmmmm, I saw Joe drinking just 2 months ago. Oh, I bet you didn't know the Lancaster Co. Republicans have no problem running a DWI convict for county attorney (a.k.a. the official ultimately responsible for enforcing the law)

Terry is lying and making up stuff. But no surprise since he also makes up stuff on his voting record. He also made up the whole "I will only serve 3 terms" bit also...Lee Terry is all talk, no action.

And no, the pic of the rancher for the pipeline is Ben and the pic used for the YDA event was Kevin.

For those diehards like us that are genuine prolifers, having an avowed prochoicer as the keynote speaker at a NE GOP Convention???How sickening! The GOP has consistently preached solidarity with our movement--now this! Absolute betrayal! The silence from PLers like Johanns, Heineman, Bruning, Foley, Sheehy, Terry, Fortenberry and Smith is what is deafening?
One has to wonder about Julie Schmidt Albin, to. If she is our Executive Director, why is she not emailing this scandal to all of our members? Why is she not calling for a boycott? Why is she not calling for the GOP elected officials to boycott? This, on the heals of her nearly virtuoso performance of do little to stop the prenatal care revocation for unborn Nebraskans---! It's too serious of an issue to call them political jokes, demagogues and hypocrites--
Now does anyone wonder why people are fed up with the political parties?

Jane,
Terry's press release says you were filming his wife and kids at a parade. Since they are not "trackers", I don't know why they would have video of this.
So I ask you directly, yes or no:
Did you or your group film and/or approach his wife and kids at the parade?

Anonymous said...

9:32--what they've done is come up to Terry in parades--within 5-10 feet of him as he's walking it. The kids get captured in the video/audio shots. Just over the top.

Meanwhile, they keep taping while Terry is talking to someone about a casework (Medicare, etc.) problem.

They tape without the permission of the constituent involved. That seems to me to be a violation of the constituent's privacy.

From the Lincoln Journal Star, April 12, 2010:

"At this time, Heidemann isn't anticipating a special session to deal with the budget, but a lot depends on next month's revenue receipts report.

If the next report holds flat like this month's, he said, the state probably has reached the bottom of the slide.

"Unless something bad happens, there's no need for a special session," he said. "April is our telling month."

The Appropriations Committee will begin meeting in June to look forward on the budget issues, Heidemann said. Members will talk about budget reform issues brought forward by Sen. Heath Mello that include a four-day work week for state government workers, consolidation of programs and streamlining services."

People like Beck, Palin, Limbaugh, and company are too dangerous to ignore. That is because there is a relatively small but signficant number of people who are only too willing to swallow their toxic nonsense without questions. Just read some of the nonsense on LS.

The unpleasant truth is that there are people in this country who continue to be taken in by a right wing politician with a folksy facade, in spite of suffering dire consequences as a result. I can’t help wondering how it’s possible for people to keep getting conned into voting against their own best interests.

In some cases, I believe it’s because some think that “undeserving” people like welfare recipients, the unemployed, minorities, etc. might benefit otherwise from “liberal” policies, although they themselves would also benefit from these same directives.

This is why it is vitally important to never give up on fighting the dangerous anti-intellectualism that is personified by people like Beck, Limbaugh, Palin, Hannity, and others. They have too much potential to set this country back at least 100 years. Real Americans understand that you must change with progressive attitudes or the country will die. We can't gp back to the Dark Ages . Our founding fathers were very liberal in their thoughts and actions. If they were alive you would not see them part of the tea party crowd. They would be standing shoulder to shoulder with President Obama and other progressives to make America the nation that they wanted in the first place.

I very much could see them being very liberal today and against the conservatives of today. No one will really no. But being a conservative today is nothing to be proud of when you see how many problems conservatives caused during their domination of America 2001-2009. The total collapse of our economic system. Two wars that have bleed us of blood and treasure. No regulation in the oil business that has caused that mess in the Gulf of Mexico. All of our current problems are the fault of conservatives. Now they want to have control of the government again and their answer to any problem we might have is NO! Well the American people will see through that. Maybe not the people of Nebraska. The loss of unemployment benefits for those long-term unemployed is a tremendous burden to the already over-burdened states. The Republicans pretend the unemployed would get jobs if they weren't 'spoiled' by continued unemployment checks. But we, in the real world, know there are no jobs, that people need their unemployment checks in order to feed and house their families and that the states will have to pick up the slack with increases in the welfare rolls.

The Republican Governors live in the real world know this too - but they are stuck in the Republican-bubble that 'deficits are bad and that deficits are what most Americans worry about'. That's not true, most Americans worry about jobs and feeding their families - deficit-worry is a made-up issue spread by the right-wing media and the Tea-Partiers.

I hope the voters pay the Republican party back in November for the mess they are creating by putting politics above the people - I'm beginning to think they want more unemployment because they think unemployed people are angry and vote Republican and they want the stimulus to fail even though it means our economy takes longer to recover. It's despicable and I wish I didn't believe it - because I like to have some faith in humanity - .But it is hard when I think of the answer I will get from the Republicans who post on this blog.

Obama has been trying to give States help But they always say No. Republicans block...filibuster and create a climate where 60 is the new majority when 51 is the real one...They are so hateful and greedy for power, they'd rather see everyone stay in dire need rather than help right where they are...since tomorrow is not promised. A republican would rather win the elections of 10 and 12 than see American heal up and get better if that meant Democrats got the credit.

and Julie - Scott Brown never voted on health care. Not once. If that's your throw away line for looking the other way again as the Republicans break your sacrosanct "you're with us 100% of the time or we're not with you at all" rules he's failed.

Ironically - if the Dems let Nelson speak at their convention they'll have the only pro-life speaker of the two parties. Julie you are an embarrassing political hack.

Ironically II: Didn't scott brown's campaign benefit from the work of trackers?? I think so. Maybe Sweeper will criticize his use of "stalkers" as part of the fawn-fest.

Oh and no jobs, you gotta be kidding. The papers are full of them, the govt is hiring like crazy, and Nebraska only has about 5% unemployment. There are lots of jobs. Of course you won't be able to pay for the 2nd car, the Iphone (oh and where the heck is the outlash at Apple, shouldn't they just give the phone away). It's crazy how some think they should be given everythin and not do something to get out of the hole they are in. Yet non english speaking people, who legally immigrate here, seem to be able to find work, and end up doing pretty well? Hmmmm, but so many in sect 8 housing just can't seem to make it.

Problem is the hand up from the government is more of a hand out, and robs people of their self worth.

Julie, you pointed out in a LJS article once that your a Republican and so are most of your NRTL members. That was when you went after any Democrat in the state if they decided to show any sign of support Ben Nelson, saying that your organization would consider never supporting another Democrat again.

But then Heiney decided to throw the unborn under the bus making prenatal care an immigration issue and some women were reported getting abortions because of the loss of prenatal care. You kept silent.

Now, a pro-choice Republican is coming to Nebraska to speak to the Republican party as their keynote speaker. You're claiming you can say nothing, but then shortly thereafter post that you have called on your supporters to call Johanns to vote against Kagan.

Tell me - if you can do that, why can't you put out a call to your same members in the same way to call on your party to withdraw their invitation of Scott Brown? And why couldn't bring yourself to ever criticize Heiney by name and directly for throwing unborn babies under the bus in the name of the scary illegal immigration boogieman?

Your excuses and your whining only shows you to be a complete hypocrite.

And yet the socialist's would have us believe they are firmly rooted in the same clay. An interesting dichotomy if there ever was one.

Bottom line is Ms Albin has a view on abortion and the opponents try to muddy the water with an absolute. Sorry to say the only absolute is you are going to perish. Other than that it's pretty much a crap shoot. Heck there are even those who don't pay income tax!

In his quest to provide “real” history, to “real” Americans (not liberals, union members, Muslims, Democrats, gays), Glenn Beck has taken on board, as an adjunct “professor,” David Barton. Beck obviously considers Barton a credible historian; but he has also been described as a “Polemical historical revisionist.” Barton has been trying to push a very conservative version of evangelical Christianity into the Texas public school curriculum and based on the recent Texas Board of Education hearings, he appears to have achieved some success with their new plan to “rehabilitate” Commie hunter Republican Senator Joe McCarthy. His “skewed scholarship” has been embraced by the Christian right wing and now by Glenn Beck who, like Barton, wants God put back into the public schools – something made very difficult as a result of SCOTUS decisions reviled by Beck and Barton. But Barton is being given Beck’s “Imprimatur” and carte blanche to spread his bizarro world US "history" which is essentially the kind of dreck that was prevalent in the good old days of segregated schools and sanitized social studies curriculums brought to us by white Christians whose idealized vision of America is now being touted by Barton whose grasp of “facts” is questionable. But here’s the thing – is Barton using material from Wikipedia or is he writing it? Inquiring minds want to know.

This is the correct defination of the NAZI party. The Nazi Party is generally described as being at the extreme or far right of the left-right political axis.[ While the party incorporated elements from both left and right-wing politics, the Nazis formed most of their alliances on the right.[ On the Nolan Chart, the Nazi party would be described as politically extreme authoritarian, and economically centrist.

Anonymous said...

Tthe NAZIS party's last leader, Adolf Hitler, was appointed Chancellor of Germany by President Paul von Hindenburg in 1933. Hitler rapidly established a totalitarian regime known as the Third Reich.

Nazi ideology stressed the failures of communism, liberalism, and democracy. That does not sound very left wing to me. You have to check your facts. The NAZIS are right wing. Just because Glen Beck does not agree with the experts. does not mean he is right. i can'rt think of anything Glen Beck is right about. Any poltical science class in the world including UNL will teach that the NAZIS are right wing.

Anonymous said...

The Nolan Chart in its original form has two dimensions, with a horizontal x-axis labeled "economic freedom" and a vertical y-axis labeled "personal freedom". It resembles a square divided into four quadrants, with each sample in the population assigned to one of the quadrants:

Top left — the political Left. Favoring government that taxes more and spends more for programs such as welfare, healthcare, education, Social Security and funding for the arts and that encourages more restrictions of trade and business regulations (which David Nolan labeled "low economic freedom"), but supporting personal freedoms such as abortion, homosexuality and illegality of the draft (which he labeled "high personal freedom").
Bottom right — the political Right. Those supporting high economic freedom and low personal freedom. Those on the Right want lower taxes and fewer social programs but support regulation by the government of cultural issues and personal behavior such as abortion.
Top right — libertarianism. David Nolan's own ideology, corresponding with great freedom in both economic and social matters. Anarchism would be a more extreme form of ideology in this quadrant.
Bottom left — the antithesis of libertarianism. David Nolan originally termed this philosophy populism, but many later renditions of the chart have used the label statism, authoritarianism or totalitarianism instead. Communitarianism is also represented by this

I get sick of people saying that the tea party movement is racist, bigoted and anti-American. I am a young (under thirty) tea party attendee. It has its moments when the political rhetoric by the politicians is a little tiresome. (Particularly the party politicians, like Bruning), but that is true of any political group. However, the claims of racism are unfounded as are the claims of being unpatriotic. So we don't have a cohesive plan on what we want - So what? We are gathering to say we do not like what is going on now and to meet others that feel the same way. It's also a way of getting information on groups that support change, like Write Your Congressman, Americans for Prosperity, Nebraska Taxpayers for Freedom, etc. People who don't like us should attend. It's free, you can sit at the very back each a good burger and learn something or at least get factual ammunition from first hand accounts as opposed to made up information from ?

In addition, I think the Terry campaign was out of line at the last Tea Party. It is true they are being followed but so what? Terry's campaign manager does not need to be standing front and center holding a huge sign to block the cameras view. That was disgusting, but not assault, as he did not touch her as far as I could tell.

That is why so many people dislike FOX and right wing AM radio. They say what ever they feel like and they don't worry about fact checking or if it is correct.

Former KKK Grand Wizard David Duke a tea party supporter?
David Duke has released a video in support of the Tea Party. Does Duke's endorsement of this group mean they are racist? Will Tea Party organizers distance themselves from Duke?

Duke's endorsement does not in itself mean the Tea party movement is inherently racist. However it does represent the latest incidence of the extreme right attaching themselves to the movement. Whenever this is mentioned Tea Party leaders try to deny it or minimalize its importance. It makes one wonder when the Right will finally start to hold themselves to the same standards they do others when it comes to weeding out extremists within thier own midst.

It is also true that Duke was a Democrat, until 1988 when he left the Democratic Party and, like so many racist Southerners before him, was welcomed into the Republican Party with open arms. He never held any official position within the Democratic Party but has been an endorsed Republican candidate, a Republican member of the Louisiana House, and has been a local chairman of the Republican Party. He became a Republican for the simple reason that it was there he found the acceptance he had been denied in the Democratic Party.

But if you really want to add substance to the "tracker" topic, please be sure to include Lisa Hannah's latest failed attempt. She wrote a letter to the editor of the Kearney Hub, full of falsities and lies about Adrian Smith....a guy she obsessively tracks and stalks. Well, finally, the editor caught her in the lie, and wrote an editorial about it. Check it out for yourownselves. It is a magnificent example of Lisa's dirty work.

Ha Julie - Here's an idea for you.

your entire ludicrous argument on the health care abortion issue amounted to the comingling of funds - you objected to the seperate accounts for abortion coverage because it was all the same to you.

So why doesn't Nebraska Right to Life demand that any funds raised by the appearance of abortionist Scott Brown be donated to charity (maybe yours?)? after all. using your logic in opposing health care wouldn't any money from abortionist comingling with other republican money make all the money abortionist money?

If the NEGOP had any balls whatsoever they'd rescind the invitation to the socialist abortionist. If not we know they really don't stand for anything at all - if they welcome Scott Brown how do they oppose Ben Nelson?

And RWP - you're right I forgot about that meaningless vote. Next time I'll be more careful - brown hasn't cast a "meaningful" vote on health care - not one.

And anon 521: Obama was a private sector lawyer in Chicago and he's earned most of his money as an author. Can deficit dave write anything other than in crayon?

Oh RWP and others what's with mocking all the hard working shoe sales professionals out there - aren't we realAmericans too? sniff, sniff.

Hard-working shoe sales professional (my eye): Keep working your angles. The commingling of funds was not the sole reason we opposed Sen. Nelson's 11th-hour-rush-to-the-floor-with-Harry scheme. It was but one of six or seven egregious problems that needed to be fixed. I would link to National Right to Life's letter on that but since it's not allowed, feel free to refresh yourself over at NRLC. Moreover, he continued through with the farce after Stupak caved and they all walked happily off into the sunset with the Big O's worthless executive order. For folks who never met a pro-abortion elected official they didn't embrace, you're awfully exorcised over Scott Brown. Feel free to come and pose as pro-life Republicans outside the NEGOP gig. You will be outed if there are any true pro-life Republicans inside the venue who decide to object to Sen. Brown's invitation.

Give me Ron Paul or Sarah Palin, he can take his Playgirl/Infanticide ideas back to the east coast.

Man, you go away for a little R&R and the place just explodes. Where to begin.

First, Texas Annie, I am flabbergasted by your morals. You equate the mandated stoning death of a woman who was convicted of adultery to unintentional screw-ups at a state run long-term care facility? Seriously? I guess since Ms. Ashtiani was granted clemency, for now, the Iranian government is more just in your eyes. Wow.

Second, the assertion that vetoing LB1110 was not pro-life is ludicrous. By that reasoning, the government is responsible to make sure that nobody dies prematurely. I realize that is in keeping with the ideal of having an all-encompassing Nanny State, but everybody sees the kerfuffle for what it is: an attempt to put Nebraskans on the hook for the healthcare of people who are here illegally. And if they are opting for a $500 abortion because they can't afford $1000 of prenatal care, they have no business being parents. They have no clue what goes in to raising a child or how much it costs. Bottom line, though, nobody forced them to have an abortion.

Thirdly, for those of you who think commingling of funds is not an issue in Obamacare, are you worried where those billions of federal dollars paid to Planned Parenthood went? They went poof! Or they went for abortions. Or into somebody's large pockets. In any event, people who do abortions can't be trusted and Obamacare has tee'ed up these people to get billions more.

Fourth, maybe it's more than one person, but probably not, who keeps ragging on the Tea Party. Keep it up. Already Congressmen have been caught lying about the N word. You think an anonymous poster on here is going to be believed? Instead, you are just getting more people ticked off and motivated to vote Republican in November.

Fifth, Senator Scott Brown coming to speak. What are you people worried about? The Dems keep saying Republicans need to make the tent bigger, and so we do and you're getting your panties in a wad? That's funny.

So this is all you've got? Nice try at trying to change the subject. The problem is that in November, the job market is going to still suck, we've almost doubled the national debt in 2 short years, Iran will be that much closer to a nuclear bomb while making Jimmy Carter look smart, people still won't like Obamacare, and the Gulf will still be highly polluted thanks to Obama pussy-footing around and following BP's lead (of course, since they gave him a million bucks, they should get something for their money). The Democrats are firmly in charge. They own this mess lock, stock, and barrel. You guys have lousy politicians in Congress and the White House and all your diversions can't change that.

I have been told it has general use arocss the internet, not just at this site. Do you know if that is true? I did use the 'Anonymous' choice once. It was an unsatisfactory experience for me. I like owning my ideas...

P.S. to Anonymous 7:24 ---Ron Paul and Sarah Palin, true Libertarian types (but with significantly pro-life ideology), would not be able to stomach the corporate welfare going on in Nebraska. Nebraskans not only subsidize the corporate tax burden, but they gift tax dollars to corporate enterprise as well! And in order to do so, without "raising taxes," they institutionally kill developmentally disabled Nebraskans. Am I lying?????

Anon 10:29: I assume that you are Texas Annie and that earlier you wrote: "I think the stoning was at least as egregious as YOUR eleven dead at Beatrice."

I think anyone would recognize that as moral equivalence. Now, if you truly believe that the state of Nebraska, on purpose and as a matter of policy, arranged for the deaths of the patients at Beatrice, then yes, I guess that would be as egregious as stoning someone for adultery, which is the current law in Iran. Good luck selling the idea that Heineman meant for the people at Beatrice to die, however.

Anonymous said...

Macdaddy, he didn't mean for them to die, he just didn't give a damn enough to prevent it. Nobody is calling Heineman a murderer, but negligent homicide might be more appropriate.

Anonymous said...

Bold Nebraska has Steve Achelpohl holding the reins. What a f-ing joke! A bad one at that.

Achelpohl commanded the NDP through the worst years of of the NDP's decline. What's he going to do, trh to bring back Barry Rubin to run the show? The NDP treasury hasn't enough money in it to attract him back, unless Sen. Nelson fills it full of corporate payola again.

TexasAnnie said...

Negligent homicide might be appropriate; I call it institutional killing. At any rate Heineman will not be held accountable because the vast majority of Nebraskans don't care about the developmentally disabled enough to hold their elected REPRESENTATIVES accountable. Like Macdaddy who has had many opportunities to write here about his regret for this social tragedy but chooses to characterize it as "unintentional screw-ups," and like Right Wing Professor who denies his collective responsibility for the "damn thing" and wants it privatized (sure, RWP, just as soon as we notice you working to privatize UNL!), folks in Nebraska have yet to remediate the Beatrice circumstance. Not even the Nebraska Right to Life!

Macdaddy: The phrase "at least as" does not mean "equivalent." But even if you had accurately portrayed what I wrote, you had no bearing for questioning my morals. Here's a primer for you: one's morals indicate whether one is true to one's ethic.

I see Senator Vitter a republican has become one of those kooks who does not think President Obama is citizen of the USA. Where do you guys get these idiots like him Palin, Limbaugh, Beck etc? When a Republican is duly elected, we liberals are expected to (and do) roll over and accept the election. But the last two Democrat presidents, Clinton and Obama, face legitimacy issues from the beginning from the right. They are the party of sore losers and sour grapes. Repubs: Get over it, move on. You lost in 2008. Look to 2012 and try to take it back legimately, and give up this playground whining of "he took my ball WAAAAAAH." Before the first African American president, none of the people cared about long form birth certificates and random school records. Now, these people want to go out of their way to prove that Obama's presidency is not valid. Well guess what, the American people elected him to office. We live in a democracy and Americans made a choice. These petty conspiracies mean nothing to this president and I hope he continues to ignore them. Now all you birthers quit whining and work on getting your candidate elected in 2012. You see that's how a democracy works. I didn't like Bush but I didn't try to prove he wasn't born here. I just went out of my way to make sure no one like Bush got a chance at the office again. Hope to do the same in 2012.

It is sad too to know he had such a strong mandate........ well at least somewhat of one. Tragic to have wasted it all so quickly.

Oops Shoe, looks like the gig is up. My counterparts at Pennsylvania Federation for Life are hopping mad today to find that their Governor worked with the O" Administration to secure $160 million in federal funds under the new healthcare debacle to set up a high risk insurance program to cover any abortion which is legal in PA. In other words, PA, which brought us the PA Abortion Control Act in the 90's and has been in the forefront of protecting unborn children, will now have untold numbers of abortions paid for under the $5 billion high risk pool created by your buds in Congress and the Big O. So much for that "executive order" that was never implemented anyway.

Macdaddy at 8:44 a.m. --I just can't let your comment stand unmitigated. What the hell do you think the code word 'privative' means? Who is going to pay for all the 'community-based services' the Justice Department seeks? What facilities are extant? Any near the Northern Nebraska-Iowa border? (Google Goodwill, Sioux City.) Nebraskans have neglected the developmentally disabled for at least the last two decades and that's a fact. When my family was brought to Nebraska to pay taxes (you call it economic development) our daughter was four years old. When we left she was twenty. During every intervening year a 'waiting list for services' was maintained. It did dip down when Nelson was Governor: he had a law passed on his behalf whereby folks on waiting lists had to begin making payments for the privilege of remaining on the list! Do you suppose there is ever a waiting list for high school seniors to get into UNL? Many years while I lived in Nebraska, the state ranked in the top ten nationally, and one year it ranked third, in public expenditure for postsecondary education. Do you know what persons like my daughter typically do upon departure from Nebraska public schools? They stay home. All day. Every day. I'm talking about equitable treatment here, Macdaddy. Not special treatment, as anti-disability bigots usually characterize this issue.

And another point you made which needs clarification. Yes, the Unicameral did appropriate money in the Spring of 2009 to facilitate the Justice Department settlement. Then the Legislature took back $10 million of that appropriation during the November special session. And the independent audit you note was authored by "experts," hired by the state, to facilitate Medicaid recertification and get those federal dollars flowing again. I guess their "finding" better attest improvement at Beatrice, huh?

I found your last paragraph confusing. Let me be as emphatic as I can: Nebraskans grossly neglect the developmentally disabled! I can establish this opinion as fact, both by anecdote and state budget data. But curiously, you next mention a Texas law which has no bearing on what is taking place in Nebraska. I believe your syllogism is a non sequitur. Did you intend to insult me or my state? You should know that your medical liability laws are skewed up there also, before casting too many stones. I freely admit that Texans ARE NOT famous for compassion. But hey, I don't have an onerous, or any, state income tax liability here. Economic development, Texas-style, is not simply a shift of tax burden...

And finally, do you use the Google Account identity feature here at Leavenworth Street? If you have any advice for using that option will you kindly offer it free of insult?

Lay off the coffee, Annie.

Who is this abortionist that is giving money to the NEGOP?

Anonymous said...

Julie, you might attempt to play the helpless victim with comments like, "If I was still on Central Committee or going as a Delegate to the State GOP Convention I might band together with others to make a point about Sen. Brown."

Let's be honest, if you're sincerely leading Nebraska Right-to-Life because you care about the unborn then you'd protest Scott Brown's appearance at convention. You would be on the street corners of Fremont with signs about not killing the unborn. You would be telling your members to write and call Johanns, Terry, Heineman, Smith, Fortenberry, and state legislature candidates to demand they boycott convention. You'd lobby for an article in the Journal Star or World Herald about Republican politicians and their double standards. And you would threaten to withdraw any endorsement by Nebraska Right-to-Life for the rest of their careers if they stand on a stage with Scott Brown.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see this is the path that should be followed if you were fighting for the rights of the unborn.

The truth is simply that you are a political hack. You have done none of these things.

Nebraska Right-to-Life is a sham. Your organization is nothing more than a wing of the Republican Party and you might as well own up to it.

Shoe Salesman said...

Julie that is great news!

Maybe the health care bill - by providing needed services to women who need them - might do some good after all.

I'm sure you figured out I don't stand with NE Right to Hate on any issue. I'm glad the PA system is set up that way so great news.

But aha - the Jig is up! you still haven't answered sufficiently why ou've failed to hold anyone in NE GOP accountable for the abortionists appearance at their convention. Anonymous above spelled out what your usual tactics are and you are doing none of them. the jig us up once and for all that NE Right to Hate is nothing more than a front group for NEGOP.

By the way, what do you think Scott Brown thinks of the situation in PA? I'll tell you. He thinks its A-OK.
