In the Red

The Mark Lakers for Governor campaign filed their most recent campaign finance docs with the NADC.

It doesn't look good:
Receipts from Individuals: $3,115
Receipts from the rest: $12,700
Receipts taken off the books after the recent scandal: $137,000 (so far, anyway)
Total Cash on Hand: $3,291
Just to contrast, Governor Dave Heineman raised over $100,000 this quarter and has $1.5 million Cash on Hand.

It is not clear to us how much longer the Lakers campaign can go on like this.

***

Congressman Lee Terry's campaign has a new web video featuring 2008 opponent, and now Terry advisor Richard Carter.

As you can see below, Carter takes a turn at the white board to tutor ...Tom White on economics:

While not experts on math, we are pretty sure that number is huge.

***

We were recently pointed to a purported nasty bill making the rounds in the Senate these days.

The Carried Interest Tax Hike (HR 4213 Baucus/Levin Bill) is coming up for a vote in the next day or so.

Opponents say that a proposed 150% increase on certain capital gains could cause a massive meltdown and potential bailouts in the commercial real estate biz -- much like the bubble bursting in the home markets did.

The bill, supported by the likes of Iowa's Tom Harkin, currently is OPPOSED by both Mike Johanns and Ben Nelson.

Worth keeping your eye on.

***

Looks like New Yorker Bob Kerrey may skip out on the Motion Picture Association lobbying gig.

Word has it that while the MPAA would like Kerrey to step in and begin defending their nonsensical ratings system sometime soon, Kerrey is sort of stuck in his New School job.

That, and Kerrey apparently is holding out for a lobbying position that pays more.  The MPAA only pays a million a year.

Guy's gotta eat...

Good video--makes a very potent point. White is on the wrong side of those two major issues.

macdaddy said...

The video was pretty boring, but it might actually work. So many of the other videos out there on the subject are so well-done and slickly produced that people may be suspicious of them. Can't get more simple than than this. I say knock it down to 30 seconds and put it on TV, assuming that Tom White is still running.

Okay, so what if the REALLLL reason Bobby isn't taking the screen actors guild gig is because he is feeling compelled to rush back to Nebraska to save the "in the Nebs" from themselves?

I hope he doesn't try to rent in Fremont. Not real sure he is still a citizen of Nebraska and I'd really hate to see him detained at the border:)

That is one pitiful video. Is this what voters can look forward to in ...what's that word I'm looking for.....leadership?

That's why you leave advertising to the professionals.

Anonymous said...

I dunno--kind of interesting video with a simple message. The two trillion thing is something people will remember.

Anonymous said...

A few people who watched it started to chuckle as Carter wrote out the zeros--makes you visualize the $$$ amount involved here. Interesting.

Anonymous said...

lee terry voted for a lot of expensive things (ie tarp). we owe $130 trillion including unfunded liabilities. this is nothing.

Anonymous said...

The trouble with the video, besides looking like it is made for an entry in the kid's section of home moviemaking, is that it spends its time telling me how horrible Tom White is, whereas the curent Congressman has said little to zip about what he's done for over 10 years to improve my life. Oh! I'm sorry. He hasn't done much except garnered a large pension at my expense.

Anonymous said...

White...White...?

Nobody cares what you have to say Spicoli. what does White...White...? have to say for himself?

Anonymous said...

Anonymous @7:49--the election is about the differences between the two candidates. Personally, I think this sets it out pretty specifically--White supports the two programs ($2 tril). You asked what Terry's done--hey, voting against the $2 tril is a pretty good answer.

Anonymous said...

7:47--that's an astounding statement you make. Two trillion is "nothing"? What planet do you live on...

Anonymous said...

You think 2 tril isn't much--but then Carter writes it out. Makes the point very well.

Anonymous said...

That "Carried Interest" issue is a biggie. Who is gonnas invest in hedge funds if their profits are taxed at a higher rate than other capital gains? Talk about killing capital formation for things like construction projects that banks won't fund now.

Terry spoke on the House floor against that tax when they took up the bill. Good statement.

Anonymous said...

Too bad Richard Carter doesn't know the difference between one trillion two hundred billion and one trillion two hundred MILLION. Listen to the video again.

I guess you get what you pay for, and Lee is paying for an "Economist" from Metro Community College.

Anonymous said...

he says billion

Competent Mathematician said...

he says 800 million, then writes .8
800 million is .8 billion, not trillion. if you go by the numbers he SAYS, not what is written down, you get .0008+1.0002= 1.1 trillion

quite the math lesson there, lee

Competent Mathematician said...

deepest apologies, i mistyped. it should be
1.001 trillion.

much better now

Jamie said...

he doesn't say any millions in there. let me lay it out in easier (and less ghetto) terms.

stimulus bill- 800,000,000,000
healthcare bill- 1,200,000,000,000
total- 2,000,000,000,000

is it oversimplified? yes. is it tongue in cheek? probably. but it does define differences i think will make the voters in ne2 appreciate terry a little more.

Nathan said...

Not that Lee is much better, but he might be the most boring speaker Ive ever heard.

Anonymous said...

White probably is having buyer's remorse right now. Jumping on the Obama bandwagon so quickly and totally last year is coming home to bite him now.

He should have Blue Dogged it--on both stimulus and healthcare but he didn't.

Anonymous said...

A little better lighting, a little better sound quality and they can make a series of these.

Carter should do another one--this time on the fact that the economy only grew 40,000 jobs last month.
Meanwhile, the 'stimulus' paid for 400,000 temp hires at the Census. When they go off the payroll later this summer, rut ro.

Two bar charts will work nice, Mr. Carter. Please proceed to production.

Did you really just bash an economist that also work for the Air Force?

And what is it that you actually do?

Anonymous said...

BTW, Lee Terry should save that Balanced Budget Amendment until next term when the Democrats are powerless. Passing it now would be a waste of time since Steny Hoyer announced this week that they will not be passing a budget this year.

Apparently, the Democrat Leadership in Washington prefers to bloat several Appropriation Bills outside of Budget and then shove an Omnibus Spending Bill (aka: everything PLUS the kitchen sink) down the throats of their Democrat Majority.

You see, if you have no budget, then you can spend freely and worry about it later. What a bunch of Dumb Asses, oops, I mean Dumb Donkeys.

Oh please, Oh please, Oh please make the next video be Carter taking roll in the class and asking if anyone has seen White and someone saying, yeah I saw him near the vending machines and Carter says, well go get him and then they return and Tom White says, "Hey, wait a minute, there's no birthday party for me here!"

Anonymous said...

Then Carter could do another one titled, "Mr. Carter, Will I Win This Election?"

In which once White bothers to actually appear in public and Carter asks him where he's been, White says, "I don't know." Using the "white board" again, Carter rights the words "I don't know" and announces that he will leave those words up the board for all to see giving full credit to Tom White. White replies, "All Right!" followed by a quick, "Righteous Dude!" with a fist bump to Carters upheld hand.

LOL, Spicoli references NEVER get old!

RWP I guess Obbama had the stones to fire McChrystal. And he fired a guy who supported him in politics. I guess Obama is one of those rare leaders who cares more about country then politics. You republicans could learn a lesson from Obama on Patriotism. Read the below.

General Stanley McChrystal banned Fox News from his headquarters, according to The Atlantic's Marc Ambinder.

Ambinder wrote Wednesday (via Michael Calderone) that McChrystal is a liberal, and added in the detail about Fox News to flesh out the point:

Even more about McChrystal: now it can be told. The story about him voting for Obama is not contrived. He is a political liberal. He is a social liberal. He banned Fox News from the television sets in his headquarters. Yes, really. This puts to rest another false rumor: that McChrystal deliberately precipitated his firing because he wants to run for President.

We have dug deeper and what we find is that Palin incurred these legal costs, most associated with Troopergate, all by herself. She had Van Flein paid for FOR FREE by the State of Alaska when the REPUBLICAN majority Legislative Council file the original ethics complaint. The Republican Majority LC that stood down the McCain machine and threw a vote of confidence for their Democrat investigator.
It was McCain/Palin that filed a separate ethics complaint with the Personnel Board, hoping for a more sympathetic result, which they got. Which is the only result EVER touted by the Palinbots.

The fact that the original Legislative Council (majority Republican) found Palin GUILTY of abuse of power, is never mentioned by Sarah's fans.

They are like those people who sit and watch life go by, and complain all the while.

And of course they will howl like a scalded dogs.

Happy, you are exactly right. The people who are actually in charge of this country, Democrats all, are either letting big business run all over us Americans, bleeding us dry through mind-boggling deficit spending, presiding over the largest environmental disaster in the history of our great nation, or making us weaker abroad by bowing, sometimes literally, to dictators and terrorists. 60% of Americans think this country is on the wrong track after 17 months of The One plus large majorities in both houses of Congress. Instead, Democrats complain that republicans won't go along with their idiotic schemes. Obama was been a true O when it comes to leading (people are even longing for the days of Jimmy Carter) and the lefties on LS are pointing at...Sarah Palin.

I won't even bother cataloguing the Bush doctrines that Obama is continuing or expanding, e.g., summary execution by drone, Gitmo, warrantless wiretaps, that caused the Left to wet itself and start screeching uncontrollably, yet are purring like little kittens when it comes to The One. (You know, The One who was going to heal the planet). I realize you are stuck with Obama for almost 3 more years and you can't be happy about it, but just remember that the rest of us are stuck with him, too, and are probably more unhappy about it.

And yet you yourself don't have the stones to identify yourself. Sad.

Did you read the RS article? McChrystal (or more precisely his staff) pegged Obama as a disengaged dilettante. Since Obama is the most thin-skinned President in history, McChrystal had to go.

Let me say it right here, now. I support immediate, unconditional withdrawal from Afghanistan, not because it's a good idea, but because Obama is incapable of prosecuting the war successfully, and keeping our troops there for another 13 months will simply get more of them killed in an ultimately futile cause.

If we're lucky, when we leave, the druglords will take it over, rather than the jihadist nuts.

TedK said...

Yeah Truman was thin-skinned when he fired MacArthur. Your spin is obvious. If Obama hadn't fired him you'd be claiming he was indecisive and weak. You just can't have the insubordination coming from McChrystal in a civilian controlled armed forces.

Right Wing Professor said...

TedK:

I'm of the opinion McChrystal engineered his own firing, because he knew he had been placed in an untenable situation, fighting a war with insufficient forces, on an unrealistic timetable, and with Eikenberry and Holbrooke both actively trying to undermine what he was doing. He couldn't quit, but he could get himself fired.

He had Obama pretty well sussed out, it seems to me.

Let's remind ourselves that McChrystal was Obama's own hand-picked commander.

As for the firing of McArthur, the Joint Chiefs actually found him not guilty of insubordination, although they recommended his relief as a matter of military necessity.

But the more interesting point to be made about Palin is how toxic she's become among the broader electorate. In fact, buried in the internals of the new NBC/Wall Street Journal poll is an amusing number: A majority see a Palin endorsement as a clear negative.

The poll asked people how they'd respond if a Congressional candidate had various hypothetical attributes. Asked how they'd feel if a candidate were "endorsed by Sarah Palin," the response was....

Enthusiastic about this attribute 8

Comfortable with this attribute 17

Have some reservations about this attribute 15

Very uncomfortable with this attribute 37

So a majority, 52%, reacted negatively. And an astonishing 37 percent would be "very uncomfortable" about a Palin endorsement, more than four times the eight percent who would be "enthusiastic" about it.

Even better, there were only two attributes a candidate might have that were seen as worse than a Palin endorsement: Supporting Bush's economic policies; and supporting the elimination of various Federal agencies and/or Social Security.

Obviously those pointing to Palin's influence are only concerned with her impact among GOP primary voters. But the above finding is another mark of just how toxic Palin has become to the rest of the world -- and how out of sync with public opinion the media obsession with Palin's influence really is.

An impeccable source, that.

There's no doubt COIN is unpopular with the troops. That would not in itself make it a bad strategy, if it were married coherently to diplomatic and political action, properly supported with adequate manpower, and given time to work. It hasn't been, on any of these counts.

Whether a strategy that worked in Iraq is best for Afghanistan, a very different country, is another issue. And let's remember; this is Obama's chosen strategy, and McChrystal was Obama's commander. Those who think Obama was such a cool guy to fire him (and he had little choice) should remember Obama hired him, just 12 months ago. OK, that's not as bad as what Harvey Perlman did with Steve Pedersen, but it was still a pretty quick in-and-out.

Forgetting the mess that he was left, including departments such as MMS which are staffed with Bushies who never met a regulation they liked. Do you really think it was possible to have replaced the personnel in these departments in one year? CBS had a story about Republican Jindal last night:
When CBS confronted Jindal about leaving so many guardsmen idle while oil is washing ashore, Jindal -- naturally -- blamed the Federal government, saying that he had requested deployment for the full 6,000, but that his request had been denied because "the Coast Guard and BP had to authorize individual tasks."

It turns out Jindal's response was a lie.

But Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, the national incident commander in charge of the government's response to the spill, said Jindal is just flat wrong.

"There is nothing standing in the governor's way from utilizing more National Guard troops," Allen said.

In fact, the Coast Guard says every request to use the National Guard has been approved, usually within a day. Now Jindal's office acknowledged to CBS News the governor has not specifically asked for more Guard troops to be deployed.

I love the left-wing religion that Obama's not responsible for anything. Fact is, he is reponsible for the response effort--and everyone--and I mean everyone in the press has said it has been chaos, with no one in charge. Example after example--fisherman try and put collection booms out, one fed agency says "ok" the other "no". The whole incident has shattered any claim the Dems have to competence--and polls show voters agree.

Have a great weekend--are you gonna watch the live feed of the leak? -Another 100,000 barrels are going out of the pipe every day...

Yep. 30 year general officer from a military family. It's completely implausible either that (1) he doesn't know what insubordination and proper military discipline are (2) is a political naif or (3) would let a Rolling Stone reporter talk on-the-record, off duty with his staff unless he knew the inevitable results.

Simplest explanation is suicide by feature reporter. Added bonus: attention drawn to the complete disarray in Afghan war policy.

This really is sounding like Vietnam. A marine base asked for permisison to shoot night illuminating cannisters to see who was shooting at them--central command said "no". That the cannisters could smash into houses and hurt people. Then they identified a house where they thought the shooting came from and asked the Afghani troops to investigate. They said "no"--they weren't going there. OK.

You guys ran for office and won, but now you can't be bothered to govern. Instead, you go for every dumbass idea the leadership puts up and have no desire to actually do what's best for the country. Seriously. We now have a healthcare reform bill and a financial reform bill that the people who sponsored them, by their own admission, do not know what's in them and what impact they could have on the country. When you drill down the specifics, it gets even worse for Two Trillion Tom. The 'stimulus' law was supposed to keep unemployment at 8%--it is now 9.7%. Some stimulus.

It has been a good deal if you are a temp hire at Census (400,000 jobs last month)but a bad deal if you want to work in the private sector. Only 40,000 real jobs were created.

Good job, TTT.

Anonymous said...

That is a very interesting point. Perhaps Prof. Carter can elaborate on this in the next video.

Anonymous said...

I read that the 'stimulus' law is actually $1 trillion when you take the base appropriation and add the interest costs involved (i.e. just adding it to the debt). Also, that the healthcare law's real cost is $2 trillion when all of the tax increases are counted as well as the fines imposed on individuals who fail to obtain the required insurance, or the fines employers pay when their employees get plans on the exchange. If this is so, isn't the difference between Terry and White really $3 trillion?

Palin has her faults, and I do not believe that being neighbors to Russia qualifies you to be an expert in foreign policy. "Steve Forbes is on the FreedomWorks board. As Krugman notes, their money comes from the Koch, Scaife, Bradley, Olin and other reliable funders of right wing infrastructure including Exxon Mobil."

"This fact that none of this would be possible without the open checkbooks of right wing billionaires and the lobbyists who love them is beyond the grasp of Glenn Reynolds"

"Before any media covering these events accept the idea that this is just a grass roots outpouring of populist sentiment, they ought to take a look behind the curtain -- where Dick Armey is laughing and counting his cash."

They act in cruel unAmerican ways:

Bud buys a clue ... Very good stuff. Your right many Democrats are rich and powerful. But the party does not favor the rich and the powerful. The GOP does that. Grand Old Petroleum. If that is what you believe in why are you complaining about it? You don't hear republicans complaining about tax breaks for the rich. That is the democrats. Yes I know they take all the risks these big time wheeler dealers. Labor had nothing to do with their success in any way did they?

BDGC said...

Bud- your premise about Labor pretty much solidifies for me where you come from. Seems you believe without workers the busines owner wouldn't be in business. Yet there may be a flaw in that line of reasoning......

Workers are an input to the process just as the raw materials etc. The whole of the end product is produced to satiisfy a customer. Without a customer there is no demand, hence there is no need for the product. With many options in the market to provide the product, production becomes one area to gain advantage over competitors. If the labor costs are too high you lose business, read up on American Steel industry in the history books, so there is a delicate balance to be had. BUT at no time would a worker have a job without the owner, of course unless you work for the Government, again read up on American Steel industry.

So while you try to be sarcastic in your rebutal all you really do is show the depth of your disdain for the risk takers. You would put the group, in this case workers, in front of anything else.

It is kind of interesting how union's are such a small part of the work force anymore and truth be told if they didn't use ganster tactics they would all but be gone. See while they served a very useful purpose at one time they are now about as useful as teets on a boar hog. You may not realize it but there were laws passed which protect workers. I know your tired responses but give it a break, no system is perfect.

If all you can do is hurl old catch phrases and sarcasm in your posts, then it is no wonder why "labor" from your point of view is not adopted by the majority of workers. Seems pretty much a thing of the past.

The facts just don't support your way of thinking. Again Labor is an input, which when properly considered can render a business profitable, a complex thing to be sure. But Labor NEVER started a business, if they had they would then be owners......

oh and to the ANON 1044 who pretened to be a Republican...... spare all of us from you drivel. Honestly even Bud said some of the previous post's points were on target. So really?

"But nearly two months after the governor requested - and the Department of Defense approved the use of 6,000 Louisiana National Guard troops - only a fraction - 1,053 - have actually been deployed by Jindal to fight the spill.

As of today, the federal government has authorized a total of 17,500 National Guard troops across four Gulf states, all to be paid for by BP.

But CBS News has learned that in addition to Louisiana's 1,053 troops of 6,000, Alabama has deployed 432 troops of 3,000 available. Even fewer have been deployed in Florida - 97 troops out of 2,500 - and Mississippi - 58 troops out of 6,000."

hmmm. Looks like our governors down in the gulf, the lead cheerleaders in criticizing the president, have failed to deploy the federal respurces they claim they don't have. an example of their disdain and craven approach: MS Gov Haley Barbour, former RNC Chairman, was in DC attending a funraiser when the oil washed ashore in his state.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that Dems can't figure that out. You all tend to jump into things head first, intent on fixing the world's problems, and failing at all of it.

You got me, Shoey. My real name is Haley Barbour. If the governors of those states are not doing everything they can be doing, then they should get slammed just as bad as Obama. Have at it. Bobby Jindal was using his 1000 troops to build sand berms after waiting from Obama to gove him the go-ahead and not hearing back for 2 or 3 weeks. They were out there, taking initiative, then Obama told him to quit because the berms needed to be 2 miles out, not 1 mile out. They had to waste another week moving the equipment. That was how Obama dealt with the situation: telling them what not to do after they had already come up with solutions and got tired of waiting on him to give an answer.

I suppose that is a style of leadership, but it doesn't sound like an effective one for healing the planet. And remember, Obama is super smart, probably the smartest guy we've ever had in the White House. Just ask any of his suck-ups in the media. Surely he can do better than the brain-dead Republican governors of some back-water states.

This is getting too easy.

So now Obama's pick for the Supreme Court can't even figure out if the government has the power to tell us to eat vegetables. She argued already, before the Supreme Court no less, that a law banning books was OK because it wouldn't get enforced. Smartest President in the History of the United States picked her. Did you know he's a Nobel Prize winner? Editor of Harvard Law Review? Illinois State Senator? Former US Senator? And he ran a campaign for President? Did you know I just posted his entire resume?

Macdaddy, when you are trrying to slam Obama's resume in 2012 you'll also have to add POTUS for 4 years. I don't think the Thrila from Wasilla can touch that.

Hey did anybody see the story concerning Hearth Stone homes in the OWH today? I totally sympathize with the owner about negative fetal energy. It's very disruptive to a workplace.

Anonymous 7:21, don't consider me one of those "you people" who has astonished you! And I'm no Dem, either.

Let me state my concern in terms you might better understand: You people (Nebraskans) took developmentally disabled adults into state custody (representative democracy) and then (institutionally) killed them. Eleven of them. Count 'em. I'm thinking that's a state action worse than any individual choice to have an abortion. So you people (Nebraskans) are killers! If you don't agree with this opinion, say so! I'm wanting to know what you intend to do about your institutionalized adults in the future. Macdaddy? Shoe Salesman? They are your responsibility (representative government).

When Nebraska Right to Life makes national headlines touting it's anti-abortion bills passed in 2010, folks around the country googling about quality of life issues just have to wonder about the value of those eleven lives at Beatrice back in 2009. Refusing to address the issue, even as little as on a blog, and anonymously at that, indicates that those eleven lives had little to no value, that no lesson was learned, and that you people (Nebraskans) are unlikely to correct the tragic circumstances concerning your developmentally disabled adults in 2010 and beyond.

Did Nebraskans "fix" the Beatrice "deficiencies?" Well, yes, the Unicameral did in the Spring of 2009. But then the Unicameral took back $10 million of that "fix" in November of 2009.

Is Nathan's comment above the generally accepted truth? Because if money is the issue I've got some great ideas about how to shift public spending to Beatrice while not raising taxes. There's lots of spending going on at your state government that is not constitutionally required. For example, the hefty cost of your University system. Make your public post-secondary institutions self-sufficient. After all, the universities are there to serve Nebraskans' "best and brightest." You could shift all that spending to Nebraskans' "worst and weakest" without raising taxes and in keeping with the Nebraska Right to Life agenda. Then it will be believable when folks such as I, down here in Texas, read about your new anti-abortion laws and how wonderfully pro-life your governor is.

You've got some real problems with your state government. Why not address some of those instead of Obama bashing on and on and on...

Why won't Chad Wright answer whether or not he wears the traditional Latter Day Saints undergarments?

Texas Annie makes a good point. And, the state is paying corporations to abuse and neglect our seniors in nursing homes by paying them Medicare and Medicaid dollars with little to no oversight as to conditions or treatment. I saw first hand and screamed bloody murder. HHS's reply? "Why don't you move your father somewhere else?"

Politicians farm their vote when needed, but the ugly truth is seniors aren't valued once they become nonvoters due to health reasons and/or dementia.

All three branches of state government need to take a good hard look at corporately owned nursing homes as well as the Beatrice State Home. It's shameful.

Unfortunately, it's more fun to make smart ass remarks than to hold our elected representatives full accountable with our voice and vote.

Texas Annie: You know Neb Right to Life is a single issue organization and does not venture into areas that are addressed by advocacy groups working in those areas. I would submit that the tragic deaths of Beatrice clients were not acts of active euthanasia(where we venture). And dumping on Obama, the most pro-abortion, anti-life President in history, is entirely appropriate for those who consider themselves to be pro-life.

"...and dumping on Obama,"......

...."is entirely appropriate for those who consider themselves to be pro-life."

Like or not he's our nation's President and I'm not sure when being abrasive or disrespectful was being "pro life" if the term means to be in favor of....life.

Maybe in Julie's world

Julie Schmittt-Felon betrayed the unborn with her compacency with LB1110. It's strange to understand how someone like Ben Nelson supports a bill that extends healthcare to 47 million Americans and comes under fire from a burglar claiming to be the leader of the pro-life movement, while Heineman can deny healthcare to 15,000 Nebraska women and unborn, and gets the NERTL seal of approval.

It is not up to the public to decide what issues non profit organizations should take up.

As for the state "taking into custody". I am assuming that in some of those cases the families asked the state to take custody due to the expense of caring for them full time.

Don't act as if the state is "taking" anyone.

The rest is(of your accusations), to the best of my understanding from news reports, are currently undergoing changes.

Change doesn't happen over night and one person cannot micro manage the world. Patience is a virtue. The conditions for our publicly cared for mentally ill and brain injured did not get the way they were over night and, sadly, will not be fixed with a snap of anyone's fingers.
