We have a few thoughts on the Mark Lakers finance scandal, and all that has gone on in the past seven days or so.
* Before we let someone else's rendition be given any credence... let us first point to the Nebraska Democrats' blog, where they complain that Mark Lakers was going over and above on his finance report, because he was listing "pledges".
Just so that we are all clear, it is the fact that Lakers NEVER HAD THE PLEDGES that is the problem (and possibly, the crime) here. We don't know what the final call will be from the Nebraska Accountability and Disclosure Commission or the Attorney General's office -- but we won't be surprised a lick to find that NONE of the pledges were actually made.
* Where the hell did Anne Boyle, and now Chuck Hassebrook, come from on all of this? This hit the news almost a month ago, and they're just coming out of the woodwork now? Where were they when the story broke, and all of their fellow Dems were piling on Heineman and Bruning?
And why now?
Here's the funny thing. The NADC and Attorney General's office said, "There are serious problems on the filing, and these need to be investigated." So, they are (as far as we know). But no one that we know of on the Republican side (check us if we're wrong) called for Lakers to get out of the race.
But now Anne Boyle and Hassebrook think that Lakers doesn't meet their moral code? Based on what new information? On what conversations?
Or is this all some sort of sour grapes that her hubby got edged out of his swan song campaign? That he didn't get one last chance to "take one for the party"? That maybe someone else told Mikey to sit down, while another (newcomer!) strode to the podium?
Democrats, we're waiting to hear from you!
And Hassebrook? Nice that the OWH essentially called him out in their article, as having a past rivalry with Lakers.
Don't get us wrong: Lakers filing is a major F-up and could possibly be criminal.
But is it Anne Boyle's place to come out against him here? When she could have simply sat on her hands and made the same point?
Something else is going on here.
* And now on to the media coverage of "Lakers' Boyle".
So the OWH writes an Editorial on Saturday on "The importance of public trust."
In it they say, "If Boyle’s claims are correct, they would reflect a gross deficiency in Lakers’ judgment...Boyle’s claims raise a legitimate, serious concern."
If whose claims are what???
Anne Boyle's claims?
Uh, OWH, this is an investigation by the NADC and the Attorney General's office.
This isn't about Boyle or her claims that Lakers should be "disavowed", whatever the hell that means.
No one answers to Anne freaking Boyle. (And if Lakers caves to her, well, that's just pathetic.)
This is a potential criminal investigation. That started a month ago.
Do you read the papers?
* And finally on our old pal Don Walton of the LJS: We appreciate Don's perspective and analysis of all things political in the Cornhusker state...but...that last article on Lakers? Really?
It started as a review of the Anne Boyle dust-up, then turned into the Mark Lakers free-for-all potshots at the Governor.
So when the hell did Mark Lakers' political opinions about Dave Heineman have anything to do with Lakers making up hundreds of thousands of dollars in pledges and potentially breaking the law?
So if Lakers robs several downtown banks, does the jailhouse interview include his calls for Heineman to commit to three debates at the State Fair this fall?
Is this where we are in coverage of the "Lakers campaign"?
Because if so, we might have to suggest that Governor Dave open up some iguana fighting rings, so that he can get his opinions on economic development in the LJS.

We already know the opinions of Lakers and Heineman on "economic development." They are corporate shills. They believe that if they give enough tax subsidies and corporate welfare, they will create JOBS. It's the only way they know how to create JOBS.
Too bad neither knows how to sustain jobs in Nebraska...
The Boyles have a "moral code"??? That would be a real headline if it was true...which it isn't. That's pretty big news since they have both enriched themselves dince the 1960's off taxpayer money. Sounds more to me like somebody in the Lakers campaign, such as it is, said no to a request to spread some campaign spending around to long-time donors/friends.
FYI folks:
Blogger was down for quite a while last night. You may have been locked out of commenting (I could not access to put up a new post). Apparently fixed this morning.

Apparently some people are still having problems posting comments.

I will pray to the flying spaghetti monster (google it if you dont know what it is).
Political contributions are only legalized bribes.
Legalized by the politicians so they can get the money. Believe me, non one contributes $1,000+ to a candidate without wanting something back from the politician.
The difference between a politician and a statesman is that the politician thinks only to the next election while the statesman thinks to the next generation.
Well if your definitions hold true, SummerRain, then there are no statesmen!
Sweeper:
When it comes to Don Walton, you are getting bogged down in the details.
You know as well as I that Walton is Nebraska's own version of Helen Thomas. He hates all things conservative.
-Lincoln Reader
On that topic, I'll take translations of the first part of Don's column today.
SS, I really hope your calls for iguana fighting catch on. I think I've got a couple of winners: El Diablo and The Shiv.
From Walton's story: Lakers said the list includes "someone who wants to give some support at some point in our campaign."
Lakers went on to say that the list also included at least one Nebraskan, a brunette, and someone born in the month of July. "You will also see that someone on that list has the letter C somewhere in their name. These are just facts that are beyond debate. You should be asking Heineman why he is twisting these facts to cover up the real fact that he has no plan for Nebraska."
Walton didn't do Lakers any favors with the article. Lakers comes across as a world-class weasel.
First portion of the Walton column translated-- "Republicans-- abandon your principles and forget both the promises you made, and those to whom you made them." That's how the left defines "growth".
"Amen" to the comment above. Or does using "amen" qualify me as a hater in Don Walton's book. (Yes, Don, I listen to AM talk radio.)
Your medium is dead for a reason.
I don't remember whether Walton's column dealt with more than just Lakers -- I actually reveiwed what appeard to be a news article rather than an opinion column -- but here was my interpretation from a couple of days ago posted on the "Celtic vs. Lakers" thread:
And, today in the Lincoln Urinal Star, in a newsy-ish article (as opposed to one of those opinion pieces -- although, with this particular writer, it's difficult to see the difference) the inimitable Don Walton (you were guessing someone else?) presses Mark Lakers to come clean with his side of the story.
Among the lowlights:
-- Lakers accepts full responsibility for this, so he can't understand why Anne Boyle has her panties in such a bunch.
-- He's determined to push through this issue and go on with a campaign that "holds the Heineman administration accountable" whatever that means.
-- Yeah, there were a few mistakes. I'm new at this. It's to be expected.
-- It was just a rule interpretation. We actually did more than what was required of us in terms of reporting and that's what got us in trouble -- going the extra mile.
-- "The furor 'has taken some toll' in terms of the campaign" but it's a mere flesh wound.
-- The issue at times has "felt like an organized political attack" by the Heineman compaign. (How's that for accepting "full responsibility"?)
-- This is all just a diversion to draw attention away from the real problems, which are that the Heineman administration has Nebraska on the road to becoming the next Greece.
So, I guess that answers pretty much everything. Thanks, Don Walton, for that totally unbiased, non-agenda-driven, completely newsy-ish piece that clearly puts this entire issue to bed. The Lakers campaign thanks you very much for all your efforts at trying to save his sinking ship.

I was referencing the Don Walton's LJS column this morning on "growth".
Your $.02 on the hidden meaning, and to whom it applies.
Well...Now we know Sweeper's first name...
-Ed.
That's "MR. Ed." to you...
I feel that most people are missing the point. This isn't about Anne Boyle or the fact she hates Mark. The real problem is the pledges. If he did fake all the pledges, then there is a serious problem. That makes him a felon. It isn't about the Democratic division, it is about the integrity of ML as a candidate.
I don't believe for a second that the pledges were real. No way would a bunch of people come out an say.. "we didn't pledge to this guy, its fake." No one would do that unless it was TRUE. There is no reason to lie to the NADC about that. They have nothing to gain from it. There was no political agenda on JB's part. He was following the law, and ML broke the law in JB's eyes.
He has every right to investigate this matter, in fact he could indict with the evidence he has right now. He won't because he is a chicken, but he should do it.
Why not pile on Lakers. It is fun. We could make it into a drinking game. Anne Boyle is Irish, she would endorse that game.
Let's stop putting the blame on her, Chuck, JB and the Governor, and start putting it where it is due. ML is a liar and a bad candidate. Simple,
If the rest of the Republican party was smart, they would roll out the red carpet and ask him to resign on the grounds that he is a felon.
Isn't it to the Republicans advantage that Lakers NOT quit the race at this point? I mean, the Dems are lucky this came out when it did. They still have time to replace him with someone just as credible as a candidate but unsullied by these financial accusations.
Lakers won't get close to threatening Heineman. But if he did, Heineman could roll out all these spots about Lakers' campaign finance issues.
Here's the problem for Dems. Contested races = turnout. The fewer the contested issues, the lower the turnout. It is bad for Tom White if Lakers ends up being a blowout loser. It's bad for Ivy Spivy or whatever her name is if Lakers crashes and burns. That's why Dems nominate folks (or try to) for all the various offices. That's why they try to draft someone to be the sacrificial lamb to run against the Republican Gubernatorial nominee.
You gotta get out the vote. And ho-hum elections don't do that.
Sweeps, your guess is as good as mine. Very cryptic. Very ... odd. It's clearly intended for someone and the way it's worded you really can't tell if he means someone in office already or if he's talking about being wrong about Lakers but only wants to say so obliquely.
I was a bit puzzled by where Walton was going. The main thing I noticed was that there was a long string of one-sentence paragraphs, which indicates to me ol' Don had some real estate to fill and not a lot of ideas to fill it with. It's the journalistic equivalent of hamburger helper.
Those old hands in the fish-wrap trade learn some preety treecky stuff
But then the phrase 'personal growth' usually just makes me think of that thing on the side of John McCain's face.
Here's the deal. Criminal charges against Lakers are forthcoming. Bruning's wife used to work for Anne Boyle at the Public Service Commission. The Brunings and Boyles have a cordial relationship. Bruning clearly gave Boyle a heads up that Lakers may be facing felony charges. Anne Boyle is an honorable public servant and she's doing the NDP a favor.
The Boyle's never do anything unless it benefits them financially or their huge egos!
And now we know it's "Mr." Either that or the Sweeper has a transgender issue.
In regard to the subject...It's time for Bruning to either go after Lakers...of course the Dems will scream...or else he should get off the pot. Everybody...well most everybody...seems to know what has to be done...except Bruning. Maybe the AG job is one we don't need either. Just contract his work out to other landsharks...the ones that are hungry.
Annie...your first post nailed it...and to top it off Heineman has washed his hands of the going's on in Fremont.
OOitT,
Could be short for Edwina ("Turn to the right!")
-Ed.
Mr. Edwina???
Ah, what the hell.
Who is Mark Lakers?
Bruning should indict him in October.
Lakers is going to be on KFAB this morning at 08:20 to explain how all this is just a simple misunderstanding and not perjury.
Maybe the Boyle's and the Hassebrook's were in Boca with Tommie Boy?
Maybe Ol'Anne thought this would be a good op for the Boyle's to jump into the race through the backdoor after a Primary? They have a history of that type of stuff )see CC 6 race against Shelly Keil and Lee Terry in the early 90's).
Anne is a creature of habit. She always gets all hot and bothered about political newcomers going after high profile races without paying any dues. Maybe this is just another example of political studs getting kicked out of the Boyle Bed when they fail to satisfy Anne: Michael Scott (100% name ID); Jim Simon (100 % self fundable but failed to take care of one of the Boyle's); Jim Suttle (I know, a little throw up there).
Mark Lakers is just last in a long line of people failing the Boyle Litmus Test.
What inquiring minds want to know is where do Tom White and Ben Nelson stand on Mark Lakers presumption of innocence?
Since White and nelson seem to be sharing a brain on all things political lately, why have they both been so silent on this one?
Ben Nelson and Tom White are two of the biggest trial attorneys in the Nebraska Democratic party, yet, they have no opinion on Mark Lakers actions or their impact on the NDP? What do they think of Anne Boyle's behavior?
Come out, come out, wherever you are Tom White and E Ben. You can't keep hiding anymore.
Apparently he was a no-show. wow.
He must be scared....
If Lakers had had a staff person call up to cancel, that would be one thing. To just not show is the worst thing he could do--they are starting to ridicule him on the program now. wow
8:28--interesting point. You'd think they (Nelson, White) would either have issued some type of statement or have been asked about it by the media.
We're only talking about the leader of the NDP this year.
Who's more invisible--Mark Lakers or Tom White?
Blowing off KFAB--without the courtesy of any cancellation call prior--is one of the stupidest things a candidate could do in Omaha. Who advised that--Vile Kyle?
I can understand if Mark has thrown in the towel and will be getting out of the race. There's a way to exit gracefully, however. What he did this morning--stiffing the top-rated AM morning drive isn't smart and reflects badly on him and the NDP.
Lakers = AWOL
If the no-show wasn't the last nail in the campaign coffin, it was pretty close...then again, does Lakers have to report the nails or just the prospect of a potential donation of the nails...
What a doofus...that Lakers. You just don't pull that kind of stunt on the media--when will Rogers and the other NDP staff learn that...
Lakers no-show on KFAB may have had more to do with advice from counsel on not further complicating his already serious exposure to both civil and/or criminal penalties for his false campaign finance report. His staff was probably busy drafting a press release announcing his withdrawal from the campaign for issue later today.
Geo--you're right I bet.
Still, it just strikes me as the most bush league thing to leave KFAB holding the bag--no notice or call of cancellation.
Also, I bet alot of people tuned in to hear Lakers 'explanation' at 8:20.
Will he show at the Workshop?
They still are hyping a Sunday workshop in Lincoln, 1 pm-3 pm.
Will anyone attend...
Panel on campaign finance could draw one or two.
Put me down on the other side--I just think Lakers still has an obligation to stay in, fight the charges and allegations and clear his name. Otherwise, he'll go through life being known as the guy who got scared and was shamed out of the race.
If Lakers does bag it, what will be interesting is the fallout for NDP. I have been told they were heavily involved in Lakers race since he didn't have paid staff until recently. Will the allegations of fraud involve actions by Vic and Jim? Could be trouble.
Anon 11:23: somehow I think Lakers will survive. His millions will soften the blow.
Mac--you could be right. If so, then you have NDP's nominee who is totally damaged when it comes to any credibility. Every time he offers a proposal for 'change' or 'reform' on any issue, the reax will be "oh that's nice ... what's new on a possible indictment?"
Lakers is responsible for everything that happens at his campaign.
Can you imagine when he attacks DH on 'leadership' or 'effectivess' or 'integrity'? omg
It would be interesting to get feedback from people at the grassroots level of NDP re: Lakers scandal or indictment. BTO?
I hope they indict him. Lock up the criminal already. He wouldn't win the race anyway. Hope he looks good in orange and black!
Let's face it--NDP has two options.
1) Lakers stays in--badly damaged as he is.
2) Lakers bags it and NDP needs to get another candidate.
Either way, NDP is hurt--they go into the summer with a bad candidate or a replacement who will be perceived as a sacrificial lamb to the Republicans.
Here's another though--as bad as Lakers is, the replacement could end up a worse candidate...stranger things have happened.
What if they NDP is arranging or is in the process or arranging a hand picked candidate to ride in on a white horse to save the day!
If you were them, you would you be calling to be your savior?
KFAB--bet they start saying "he/she pulled a Lakers" ... next time there's a no show. It has gone now to the point of ridicule. Bet they talk about it more tomorrow morning. Time to tune in.
Then there's Becka... I have a hunch he'll comment on LNS
Lakers no show
anon@11:55
Why do you encourage him? I'm sick of all the blogs on here becoming about the nutcase from Holdrege. He's not going to comment on Lakers, he's just going to write about himself being a martyr for free speech and reform. It was funny at first when he was on the news but that was a year ago and it's getting very old and annoying.
"Silent Tom" and "No Show Lakers"
The team for NE... lol
A**H*** @ 1:04,
I certainly do seem to be an obsession with at least ONE of Sweeper's readers. Like to guess who that might be?
As for the Lakers controversy, my take on it is that there is an underlying story that will prove to be very interesting once the truth comes out, if it ever does. What we have seen, so far, is just smoke and mirrors.
Personally, I am glad to see that the AG and the NADC are doing their jobs, as they should be. If it were a Republican accused of doing this, would the NDP be as magnanimous with their hands-off attitude about it? I think not. My stance is, as always, what's good for the goose is good for the gander. I want my party to always do the right things, and when they don't, be willing to take the lumps for their bad behavior. Isn't that what the Republicans always do? ;-)
I think that's a very reasoned and appropriate approach, BTO. Anon 1:04 owes you an apology. Compare the two posts--obvious who the nut is...
How's everything at the Lakers campaign and NDP?
Hope all is well...
Don't quit! Hang in there, Mark--you can turn this around.
Anyone know if Lakers had any public appearances today? What's going on...
Anonymouse at 2:33.
You are a COWARD. Use your REAL NAME. Unless, of course, you're actually Brian T. Osborn using a sock puppet to try to make it look like someone agrees with him.
I'm sure it wasn't BTO. That's giving him way to much credit. He is not that smart. He is after all a Democrat and at best a traitor to his cloth.
Personally, I'm glad BTO posts here and I'd encourage him to keep it up.
This really does show a key difference between LS and Neg Nebr Net--they don't have much feedback or comments and don't welcome diversity. LS does.
Keep posting BTO!
Yeah BTO keep posting, cause we are all going to laugh at you anyway. You must think your such a honest human being, Funny how your own Party hates you and we have people cheer you on. You must be lonely on your little island.
I know you will make an anonymous comment so save it.
-VC
What's funny are the Dems who come here to trash other Dems, including BTO--who actually held a leadership position (county chair) with NDP. What have these other fools done...probably not much.
Yeah he held a position, just like many others, and then he fell from grace, not for speaking his mind, but for being a useless tool.
Maybe the fools like VC, Anon 4:14, TexasAgnes and Anon 4:33 will realize shilling for the NDP right now isn't the smartest move. Or, they could do it over at Neg Neb where there might be some takers.
How's your Gov. nominee's campaign going today?
Funny that the Dem. Gov. nominee's campaign might be nearing collapse--and with it the NDP's chances at wins this Nov.--but they spend time and effort attacking BTO. lol
Rather than attacking BTO, why aren't the activist Dems helping Lakers collect on the pledges. Better use of time?
Or given today's fubar, maybe they could volunteer to help Lakers w/media scheduling and prep.
Is Lakers' campaign on banker's hours now...called their HQ--no answer. I realize it's late...
One thing Lakers has done is elevate the issues of honesty, management skills and trust to the top of the dialogue this Nov. He loses on all three--these are important attributes that people care about.
Seriously, suppose ML attacks on something w/regard to Beatrice, for example.
Comeback is easy--ML can't properly manage and oversee his campaign's finance reports--why would anyone think he could truly manage and oversee multi-million dollar gov't agencies and programs...
He's dug himself into a pretty deep hole.
Never met BTO--but I bet he'd be able to fill out a campaign finance report honestly and accurately...
Sets him apart from the Dem fools posting here and those who work at NDP.
Look at Lakers' web page
He says he'll be a gov. "who brings sound decision-making" to the table.
Like he did on his campaign finance reports?
Sweeper, do you really expect to see fair reporting in the LJS, aka Liberal Journalistica Schiesspiel?
You have a good heart.
Thanks, One Out In The Third. I'm curious: what's your take on the upcoming Fremont vote?
Anonymous at 5:45 -- Do you think there is a legitimate attack with regard to Beatrice?
This is probably the lowest political game I've ever seen the Democrats play ever. They're trying to highlight the cuts Heineman made to Health and Human Services by manipulating a mentally ill man to carry out his descent into madness all over the political blogs. The Democrats can argue for more funds for mental health coverage for low income people without putting those people in our face. These are the kind of tactics people like PETA and Rev. Fred Phelps use. Democrats are manipulating and exploiting BTO to attack Heineman and score political points, how low can you go?
I think Texas Annie is a secret Tom Osborne plot to make Nebraskans determined to get the heck out of the Big 12.
A**H*** 10:54,
Good grief! You really need to get back on your AA meetings. Good night!
I don't mind BTO posting here, it improves the dialogue. I am getting pretty sick of the back and forth between BTO and the NDP leadership. That's getting old. If it doesn't really deal with the post by SS, then just get a meeting and have a fight, leave the rest of us out of your Family Feud.
You must see how foolish you sound after you click publish?
The bickering is ridiculous. But worse, it gets in the way of meaningful dialogue.
Does anyone up there have an opinion about Heineman's record on free market capitalism, or the Beatrice incidents, or, as One Out In The Third has considered, the Fremont response to illegal immigration?
Why will Right-to-Life and Tea Party Nebraskans vote for Heineman IF considering his record?
KFAB
They were joking this a.m. on the program.
Saddlymeyer said Lakers "blew KFAB off" yesterday but is "apparently forging ahead" with a meeting this weekend in Lincoln.
"Will he show up" Rose asked.
People are making fun of Lakers now...
TA--
Take something in NE that is a real issue or problem. Lakers then jumps on it with his 'proposal' for reform, change, better management/oversight etc.
This coming from the guy who filled out fraudulent finance reports and can't even oversee his own campaign.
It is a "do as I say not as I do" issue now. Destroys his credibility on everything. That's just my take.
The NDP state convention is coming up.
Will Lakers be a no show for that too?
Texas Annie--I don't really know the issue very well--I've seen your posts on Beatrice and realize you have alot of knowledge of it. Having said that, my answer would be "no". Lakers is now incapable of making the case for change/improvement/reform on anything. He can offer a 10-point plan for better management of Beatrice, and the response is simple:
"Oh, right. This is the guy who can't even manage his own campaign. How's he gonna manage something like Beatrice."
Anon 8:14--agree w/you partially. We know NDP is ticked at BTO--the solution isn't to send trolls here to attack him--let them do that at NNN where no one will read about it.
Let BTO post! NDP should buzz off here...
BTO = Beacon of Truth and Opportunity!
Can't wait to see what they say on KFAB tomorrow--this is gonna continue folks...
Off topic but witnessed an unpleasant situation this morning in the Lifetime Fitness Cafe. Someone just lost my vote this November.
Is Lakers staying in the bunker again today--even a mole comes out once in a while--when will ML...
OMG
Just saw the email from Lakers...
Nothing but a rewrite of his f/r solicitations...nothing about the fraudulent finance reports or the acrimony that has broken out among NDP activists who want him to quit the race.
Smart move, Mark. Just ignore everything and it will go away...
While I don't agree with BTO on his political platform I do believe him to be a good person who adds to this board. Those of you taking hits at him recently seem pretty petty.
If your position can't take scrutiny then it's darn shallow. BTO put's his out there, with his name, and does a fairly good job supporting them. Again I don't support his many of the ideas he puts out but I RESPECT him for doing it and the manner in which he does.
I was going to go to this dinner meeting tonight, but I think I'll pull a Lakers.
To all the Republicans that would like to see me leave Leavenworth Street,
Let me explain something. My reasons for posting here on Leavenworth Street include:
• This blog is for "the talk of Nebraska politics." Sweeper has never claimed that it is exclusively for Republicans, Conservatives, Tea Partiers, or any other particular group. As a Nebraskan interested in "talking" about Nebraska politics, I prefer to post my opinions on a blog where I am welcomed by its owner, and I don't have to contend with the snide remarks, and hair-on-fire retorts, of the author of some pseudo-progressive blather-fest.
• It is one of the most widely read blogs in the state of Nebraska. Since I want my message to be spread to the maximum number of readers, in the shortest amount of time, I find Leavenworth Street to be the ideal forum. While it is true that I probably should start my own blog, and I may do that yet, it takes time for such a thing to develop readership. Many of the issues I choose to rant about are time sensitive.
• I believe each and every citizen has the right, even the duty, to express their own opinions freely, without having to first ask the "leadership" of their party or organization if what they post is consistent with current dogmas or approved by some elected official. Sweeper allows me that freedom.
To all the Democrats that would like to see me leave Leavenworth Street,
Grow up, then read the above.
BTO--put me down firmly as a Repub who wants you to keep posting!
I bet the comments critical of you that appear to be from Repubs are really authored by NDP people like Kyle, Hannah or Samp. That's how they work. Pure disinformation.
When BTO comes in here and blogs anonymously pretending to be a supporter of himself, I wonder if this is a symptom of his psyche slowly developing some sort of split personality disorder to go along with the litany of other psychological problems he faces.
This blog is most likely his only social outlet and it's scary to see him making up 'anonymous imaginary friends'. It is an especially troubling time for him now that he has been driven off his role as Phelps Co. Chair and he now holds no title in Democratic politics whatsoever.
OT: Does anyone else find it funny that Republican Senators want the government to bail out the Big XII?
LOLz.
Ummm, A**H*** @ 11:16,
Get your facts straight. I am a delegate to the 2010 NDP State Convention. That is the next to highest "title" you can have in the NDP, only rank-and-file Democrats have more authority.
When I became active in the NDP, everyone thought that Sen. Nelson was the highest ranking Democrat in the state. Fortunately, I have been able to educate SOME of them that, the more people you represent, the more people you work FOR. To those capable of understanding the language of the NDP C&B, it is apparent that the organizational chart is actually inverted from the way many believe. The State Chair is at the bottom of an inverted pyramid, not at the pinnacle.
As for posting anonymously, I will assume all the "characters" that use that title are one and the same, and it ain't me babe. As I said before, you need to go back to your AA meetings.
11:16 is a good example of disinformation and lies--probably by an NDP or Lakers staffer.
I posted in support of BTO and I am not BTO. There are a bunch of us here--we appeciate BTO's insight. Those that don't--well, go sell it to Neg Nebr Net.
BTO--11:16 needs other help too--in the mental health arena.
How's it going at the Lakers campaign today....
Is everyone happy...
Hummm? No title in Democratic politics whatsoever?
As a Democrat, I have to wonder if there is any difference between no title, and any title in the NDP. Either way your not very significant in Nebraska. It looks like all any title in the NDP is worth is an over rated ego boost.
The folks who hate BTO in the NDP are mostly a bunch of drones. BTO had the guts to call them out, and it was a blow to their egos. The NDP is run by a bunch of clowns who can't find any issues or candidates. If an issue jumped out at them, they'd all run in the opposite direction to avoid it. The NDP will never amount to anything as long as the leadership takes the position that their problem is people who point out that there is a problem.
The Republicans can lean back and put everything on automatic pilot. There's not much point in getting worked up to do battle with a group that thinks Vile Kyle & Lovely Lisa are the wave of the future. With a bunch of back benchers in the Legislature like Mello, Nordquist and White the future of the Democratic Party in Nebraska is securely headed for nowhere.
OT: Does anyone else find it funny that Republican Senators want the government to bail out the Big XII?
Cut them some slack. Kansas and Kansas State are two days away from a future in Conference USA. The prospect of playing annual matchups with East Carolina and Tulane would drive anyone to desperation.
Nyuk nyuk nyuk.
I'm ticked off at the Omaha World Herald. They interviewed me for their Big Ten story, but I was lumped in as one of 'several professors said'. Actually, I said the move would have a positive but probably rather small impact on academics, and was driven entirely by football, but that didn't fit in with the tale they wanted to tell.
Is No Show gonna show for anything today?
Nebraska is a grand place. It seems the only reason for the state to exist is to support a college football team. And who can doubt that the University long ago gave education the boot so that they could more properly function as a support network for a football team?
On the really, really important news story of the moment, the LJS is reporting there's a Regents' conference call today to discuss realignment. Since there are several of the Regents who can't resist talking to the press, we should know the whole story by this evening.
And I doubt Harvey would be telling the Regents a dang thing unless the deal were sealed.
A close inspection of Mark Lakers stand on issues, coupled with his passion for remaining in undisclosed locations, makes me wonder if he's been renting space in one of Dick Cheney's bunkers.
It seems the only reason for the state to exist is to support a college football team. And who can doubt that the University long ago gave education the boot so that they could more properly function as a support network for a football team?
I heard the Japanese had something to do with the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Baker's Dozen
Had to note that Vile's post about Lakers at NNN has garned all of 13 comments. Impressive.
If the terrorists were serious, they'd take out Memorial Stadium in Lincoln. It would cause the entire state of Nebraska to implode, and quite likely the entire country would be sucked into the earths core in the process.
So, which would get more coverage if they happened the same day...
Lakers pulls out of race for Governor or
Nebraska joins the Big X
In my opinion, one matters the other doesn't. I wonder how Happy Valley is in November...
I have to vote for Mark to stay in this thing! Don't give up the battle Mark--it is always darkest before dawn--and dawn may be a ways off but keep swinging!
Anon 12:44: Happy Valley won't be so happy in November. Unless you wear red.
I agree with you that one story matters and the other doesn't. The entirety of Lakers' campaign has been trivial. Political junkies are the only ones who care. If he drops out of the race, it will make his name recognition go up about 1 point from 10% to 11%.
I hope the comments about football being "important," are tongue-in-cheek. Football is certainly of no importance to me!
Anonymous at 9:13 and 9:21 --- Yes, I understand that Lakers is not considered suitable. I did not expect him to win even before the campaign reporting "scandal" erupted. My inquiry pertains to Heineman and HIS RECORD on free market capitalism, Beatrice, Fremont...
If you can't get Heineman to commit to Republican axioms now, how will you hold his feet to the fire after the election? There is a credibility gap between what Right-to-Life and Tea Party Nebraskans want (i.e. most Republicans), and what Heineman delivers.
Any Lakers or White sightings out there?
BTO - you're a delegate to the Dem's convention? Why don't you run for state chair? You've talked about it in the past.
Football is way more important than the Lakers campaign for Governor. It was a joke run to begin with and now the joke is over. Husker football does more to promote this state than any of the politicians in Lincoln and that includes Heineman.
Has anyone heard of a few more Dems coming out w/a call to ditch Lakers?
TA--excellent question--I don't think anyone can be 100% on tea party/libertarian and still win a statewide election. Maybe I'm wrong on that.
But most people perceive DH as being conservative--especially on fiscal issues.
I bet he wins at least 98% of the Repub vote this November and probably 35% of the Lakers vote.
As a member of the Democratic State Convention, I and some others plan to offer a motion to remove Mr. Lakers as our representative in the Governor's race.
I am completely ashamed to have him as my party's representative on a statewide ticket. If you lack integrity during a campaign, how can you deliver integrity as our state's top official.
I hope that others join us.
Not for nothing, but has anyone on Lakers campaign called KFAB to explain/apologize?
2:56--has Silent Tom taken a stand on this yet? Or, is he simply being Silent Tom on the issue...
A 2:06,
Why did I change my mind about running for State Chair? Upon further review, I thought, "It's like a dog chasing a car - what would I do with it if I caught it?"
Due to the always precarious financial condition of the NDP, all of the chief officers have pretty much funded their excursions to Washington, and elsewhere, out of their own pockets. That might explain why it is so rare to find a political party run by working class people.
I discussed that issue with another potential candidate for the job at an SCC meeting, and she agreed with me that the only way it would be feasible for someone, not independently wealthy, to hold the position would be to combine the Chair and Executive Director positions. I've heard that the State Chair was once a paid post. That was before Sen. Nelson owned the party.
As a Delegate to the NDP Convention, I would like to offer up BTO as the sacrificial lamb to run against Dave. That way he would just shut up.
I have never liked you and have had very limited interaction with you. the State Party hates you because you can never shut up for the greater good. You think you know everything that goes on, and yet you complain about everything and never once have tried to fix anything. You lost your chairmanship because people in your home county can't stand you.
Do us a favor and continue to post on LS, because for every post you make, 20 posts shoot up about hating you or liking you and it distracts the rest of the morons on LS and takes them off message.
*Not all on LS are morons, only those who continue to like or dislike BTO comments.
* While I myself have just done the same thing, I consider myself a moron for that, to which I apologize to the rest of you on this blog who think nothing of BTO.
3:51--thanks for your admission that you are, in fact, a 'moron'. We agree.
As a Repub, I personally think BTO has added quite a bit to the discusson here--particularly on the questionable financial actions of NDP insiders.
No wonder the attacks on him from NDP hacks and fools.
Keep it up, BTO! Look forward to your posts.
How's everything at the Lakers campaign? Did you have another 'productive' day...
Keep it up BTO!!!!!
Keep everyone on here talking about you and not about the real problems in Nebraska!
Great Job!!!
Thanks,
Your NDP Friend!!!
Have the discussion!
Good move that the NDP convention will discuss the Lakers scandal.
Obviously, that is what the news will cover--the party being ripped apart by dissent and allegations of crimes.
Above all, let's let the convention air the laundry out--it will make for a better NDP.
RE: Problem
Only problem is, the NDP candidate doesn't have a shred of credibility left if he ever wants to propose solutions to a problem.
The problem is the clown can't manage his own financial reports and campaign staff let alone billion dollar state programs.
That's the problem.
Lakers made a dumb rookie mistake, Nebraska will make a bigger mistake by electing DH for another term.
What is DH going to do when his stimulous money runs dry. the guy has NO plan for economic development... But man does he look good on TV acting like he does.
BTO proves once again to have no loyalty to anyone. That "potential candidate" obviously didn't want to bring their candidacy public but Brian threw this person under a bus by talking about it openly, just to be controversial and make it look like he knows something.
What's NE unemployment compared to other states...
4:56--shouldn't you be helping Lakers fix the fraudulent reports...
Or at least help the guy out and rebook him on KFAB...
lol
Taking bets on whether Lakers will pop up in public anywhere tomorrow...
Dumb and Dumber
Silent Tom and Fraudie Lakers holding a news conference...
The Dem state convention has the chance to set everything right--
They need to have a long discussion on the Lakers scandal and let alot of the delegates speak on it.
Who is Sgt at Arms... might be busy.
The NDP convention is a good opportunity for them to show the public what they stand for.
They'll get alot of coverage--go for it!
Lakers needs to raise his name ID.
Convention will help.
Discusison of the scandal and his fitness to continue as gov. candidate can help do that.
NDP, see, we're here to help ...
4:56--thanks for boosting up BTO. Feel free to post more attacks...
NDP layoffs
Predict NDP lays off everyone but Rogers this month... but he gets 30% pay cut.
Mark--it could be worse for you--read this:
The South Carolina Democratic Party is now trying to push Alvin Greene (D) -- their newly-minted Senate candidate who basically didn't campaign -- out of the race after it was revealed that he was "recently charged with disseminating, procuring or promoting obscenity after showing obscene photos to a University of South Carolina student."
pol wire 6/9
I gotta say, a delegate to the NDP convention is someone whom I listen to on the subject of morons...
...just as I'd listen to someone named Gotti on the subject of crime families.
Mark Lakers = Alvin Greene
Various Anonymice,
I would image the problems that plague the NDP are shared by the Republican Party in Nebraska. I can only speak for what I've seen of the NDP, someone else will have to speak about the sins (and the morons) on the other side of the aisle. RWP?
I think my case has more than been proven that, if you find yourself in opposition to the way the NDP is being run, the only response they have is S.T.F.U.!!! You get told to get in line, do as your told, and know your role. If you don't belong to the private clubs that meet in Lincoln and Omaha (and to a certain extent, Grand Island and Hastings) then nobody wants to hear anything you might have to say, unless of course it is to shout hosannahs to the edification of Sen. Nelson!
What the NDP needs is to be turned on its head, shaken vigorously, then set aright with an all new administration that is comprised completely of new people - people with fresh ideas - so yeah, Kyle, that leaves you out - and me as well. I guess you could say I am promoting a Democratic version of the Republicans' Tea Party. It needs not just to have a State Convention with the few little tweaks to an already dysfunctional Constitution; it needs to have a Constitutional Convention, one wherein a lot of people stand up, holler and shout, throw insults if necessary, but construct an NDP that can face the future with some hope of regaining ground. As it is, if all we accomplish is patching up the status quo, we'd might as well all go find something else to do with our time.
Both of my past experiences with State Conventions is that it is a circus, choreographed by a very small group of people, whose primary aim is to preserve the power of said same. The largest share of the time is wasted yammering on about a Platform that absolutely NONE of the candidates pays any attention to. Far too much of the time is spent on blowhard speakers that add nothing to what is already there. Most of what does happen is already decided before the convention even begins, unless there is a wholesale abandonment of the ship by the previous pack of rats. But, even then, one can never be too sure if they aren't still running the show from behind the curtain.
My first proposal will be one that makes the State Chair a full time, paid position, and eliminates the position of Executive Director. A party as far behind the eight ball as the NDP cannot afford anyone at the helm that is part time. And for GOD'S SAKE, let's not import another disaster like Barry Rubin, anyone in league with him, nor any of his protege's. We can't afford another hit like that.
OK. All of the Democratic butt kissers can now reply by calling me a "traitor," and my personal stalker can make another appearance deriding my mental state and making allegations from fictional Holdrege residents. Oh, by the way numb***s, I didn't run for the office of county chair, so it would have been extremely difficult for me to have lost the election. But don't let FACTS get in your way.
Never been to a GOP convention, BTO, so I can't help you. I have crashed a couple of GOP victory parties, though (and one Democrat one). When we passed the NCRI, our victory party at the Embassy Suites was right next to the GOP's. Theirs was bigger, and ours was pretty tense, since we were sweating out the Colorado initiative as well as our own, so I spent a lot of the time over with the Repubs. I discovered that if you wear a suit and tie, and say hello enthusiastically to the few people you do know, nobody will question your being there.
Right Wing Professor believes in something, why would he try to perform a lobotomy on the NEGOP like you have with your party?
It's unusual to see these posts from a medical standpoint. Usually when folks begin to lose it they slip into dementia quietly and alone, we are witnessing the eye of the storm, watching as BTO's mental state slips the surly bonds of reality day by day.
Ya know, A**H*** 7:01, a recent court case established the right of a person to subpoena the owners of websites like Blogger, Facebook, etc., to relinquish the identity or traceable computer information of dip**** anonymous slanderers like yourself. Keep it up bozo, and I may just have to kiss and make up with Vince Powers and let him handle a case against you. I understand he usually wins. And, I'd be willing to give him 100% of whatever we could squeeze out of you, just for the joy of doing it.
Brian, I have to admit I cannot think of a stranger "Plaintiff" is a slander, libel, or harassment case than you.
The problem that arises is if you went after this person attacking you, there is a mountain of evidence online going back years of you making much more libelous accusations, and dozens of witnesses that would testify to behavior of yours that would lead a reasonable person to conclude that someone calling into speculation that you are "crazy" wouldn't be committing libel.
Not that BTO cares (or should) what I think but I dont mind him posting here at all.
Brian, you are nothing if not persistent! Your sharp criticism of your local party leadership might, in fact, be a rejection of local political norms. Hear me out here. While I lived there (I was literally brought there to pay taxes under the original LB775) I was amazed that no matter how great the slight, Nebraskans expected a pleasant demeanor or otherwise unemotional decoram. And I do mean EXPECTED. Perhaps (and I'm just saying...) the NDP "told you to get in line, do as you're told" as you state above, BECAUSE Nebraska social and political norms prohibit and censor disagreement.
At any rate I recognize in you a free thinker and I look for your comments here. And I apologize in advance for stating so because someone is sure to denigrate you for having received this approval in a succeeding post. After today's reading of how -Anonymous- treats you, indeed, I wonder if I'm welcome here! Certainly I DISAGREE with the business-as-usual governmental style there. I find just as much fault with the Republicans (if not more, since they're in charge) than the Democrats. And I think freely enough to wonder out loud: will Heineman become the next governor because Nebraskans are generally too polite to promote someone better? Is voting for the lesser of two evils the best Nebraska can do?
Brian, in your third paragraph above, you made a reference to "Republicans' Tea Party." Is that literally what you meant? I did not realize that the Tea Party is Republican.
TexasAnnie--I'm a Republican, but am very glad you post here. Please continue to do so.
Also, please know that Dems like Kyle and Hannah have a habit of posting obnoxious comments that appear to be from the Republican side, although they're the ones that do it. Disinformation campaigns on their part.
Texas Annie,
Yeah, I'll admit I have all the social graces of a rabid buffalo in heat when dealing with anonymous attackers and well known charlatans. However, most who know me personally, actually can find me charming. I do NOT treat those that have EARNED my disrespect gracefully, as I see no future in it. It probably has to do with having lived amongst the Mafia in Sicily for twelve years. I HAD to bite my tongue and remain silent in the face of downright evil behavior ... or die. I swore, when I returned to the states that I would never be complacent in the face of corruption again. Perhaps I take it a little to far for the tender sensibilities of Nebraskans, but then again, I have been exposed to different cultures, and evidently, have assimilated some of their behaviors.
At the risk of alienating the few Nebraskans that CAN get along well with me, I find it a travesty that the average citizen of this state is more familiar with the roster of the Cornhusker football team than it is with the people that write the laws that control every moment of their lives. A good many of those that ARE familiar with them, in my opinion, are interested in buying their favors, or working for them. Either way, it involves the world's oldest profession. And to think that, because I refute both of those means of access to politics, I have become a rebellious outcast.
If there is ANY doubt that the Tea Party is run by the Republican Party, at least in this state, I suggest you look up an article that appeared in the Saturday, May 29 Kearney Hub. The headline is, Tea Party rally will be June 5 at Centennial Park. The article states that the event "is being organized by the Buffalo County Republican Women and Buffalo County Republican Party."
Actually, BTO didn't out any candidate by saying that someone he talked to wanted to make Chair a paid position. It's become widely known that Jane Kleeb wants just that, is pushing for it, and wants the job herself. Many have heard her say that publically. It's probably BTO's source. Of course, she'd have to give up her huge paychecks from the Sierra Club and her latest "job" in "the neb".
A 7:41,
As my good friend, and Gage County Democratic Chair, Tom Dorsch, once said, "I can't wait for the depositions to start flying."
Anyone that wants to accuse me of libel will have to prove that what I have said is a lie, which would very likely incriminate several very important people in this state. I don't believe they can, or I wouldn't have said it. As for my "crazy" behavior, please describe some of them, I am just as curious as everyone else as to what they might be. If you mean that by doing the unthinkable, shouting loudly that the King is Naked, as he parades by in his birthday suit, I stand bemusedly guilty.
Small world, BTO. I called Powers a few months back about an internet libel case, and he talked me out of it. I got the sense I knew more about the internet than he did, but he knew defamation law and Nebraska courtrooms.
A lawyer who will talk you out of paying him a fee is a lawyer who might be worth retaining.
RWP,
Vince is one of the best, but he doesn't much care for me. We've had a severe difference of opinion over what the meaning of the NDP's Platform stance on open meetings signifies. My position is of course, extremely liberal, Vince's ... not so much.
I used to go to lifetime quite a lot. I never saw a poll there. Who did you see and what did they do? Do dish! I'm always down for a good bit of juicy gossip :)
Sen Bachus is an idiot. He suggests "rescuing" Wall Street by piling onto BP. First of all, how is this germain to the question. Second, if BP is forking out cash for newly invented fines (after the fact, btw), then how the hell are they going to have the capital to actually give to the folks that have losses in the Gulf? And third, this is just a backdoor for him to continue to get more cash from the financial services industry that should hate him.
This is no different than Cap and Trade. Take money from BP as a punishment for having an explosion on one of their rigs, put it in a hat, and trade it for favors on Wall Street.
Frankly, I would prefer they knocked on the door of every single person on the sex offender registry and shake them down for $500 as an additional fine for whatever it was they did however long ago they did it. Then they could go to the local 3M plant and by more booms and give the rest to Kevin Costner and ask him if he will donate the use of his cool water cleaner that the government developed for him.
Isn't it funny to seee the big bad cyberbully BTO cowering in the corner crying for his lawyer?
A 10:01,
Not nearly as hilarious as your repeated attempts to be significant by cowering behind your mommy's skirts. You must have gotten beat up on the playground a lot when you were a toddler ... or are you still?
Brian thanks for sharing with us that you lived amongst the mafia in Sicily.
Have you ever in your life told people that you were once part of the mob, or have you ever claimed to have mob connections?
Wannabe Holdrege voter,
I refuse to answer based on my rights under the 5th amendment of the United States Constitution and my Miranda rights. ;-)
Nice try though, Hastings voter.
