Another statewide Dem

Fremont attorney and former Mutual of Omaha corporate counsel, Janet Stewart has said she'll enter the race for the Democrat nod for...Secretary of State.

Man, those Dems do NOT like the job John Gale has done. I mean who WOULDN'T want to go after that so and so Gale!

(Hmm? What?)

Anywho, you may remember that Stewart ran for the 1st Congressional District Democrat nomination back in 2004.
No?

Well, Matt Connealy beat her, and then Connealy got beat by Jeff Fortenberry in the general.

Back in 2004, Don Walton of the LJS described the 1971 UNO graduate Stewart as "the only pro-choice champion among the dozen congressional aspirants".

That should get Julie Schmit-Albin's dander up.

Oh, and Ms. Stewart also has a Twitter account.

Her handle is "Fremont Diva".

Because why wouldn't you want to elect a Secretary of State who describes herself thusly?

OK Dems, you've got Secretary of State covered. Who else do you got?

I'd love someone to tell me what the hell the abortion issue has to do with this race? It doesn't legislate. Oh, wait....that's right, people have to find any stupid reason to continue to support the people who will tell them what they want to hear, but never actually do anything at all about abortion.

Right Wing Professor said...

C'mon, Sweeper, you know Secretary of State has historically been a stepping stone to...hey, what IS Scott Moore doing these days, anyway?

Street Sweeper said...

Since you'd "love" it, I'll step up. This issues comes up all the time, and Julie Schmit-Albin usually weighs in.

Basically it comes down to this: Someone who can actually legislate on the abortion issue -- state Senator, Governor, Congressman, etc. -- usually has to start their political career SOMEWHERE. The more experience, the better chance that candidate has of advancing in office.

So that's why pro and anti-Abortion groups weigh in on the "weed commissioner" races. The "Weed Commissioner" runs on the weed record and gets elected state Senator. The state Senator gets elected Treasurer. The Treasurer gets elected Governor. The Governor gets elected Senator.

Would the Senator have made it that far w/o being elected Weed Commissioner? Maybe, maybe not.

But if so, the pro and anti abortion forces want the experienced person to also espouse the issues important to them as they climb the ladder.

Hope that helps you.

And DRIVE SAFELY THIS WEEKEND!

I think Julie and the other fringe nuts are hysterical. Being so focused on one issue that you bleed into all the races that have nothing to do with that one issue is pathetic and just plain sad. When you start fighting to ban IVF, protesting fertility clinics, and actually start punishing the candidates you support who don't do anything to push your one issue, maybe then some people will take you seriously. But you keep supporting the same people who never do anything when they are actually in a position to try to do something. The reason they don't is because your type is a guaranteed vote and easy to string along.

Secretary of State has nothing to do with abortion. Get a life.

Anon: 11:30 p.m. 10/31 said, "But you keep supporting the same people who never do anything when they are actually in a position to try to do something." Nebraska Right to Life doesn't just roll over if an elected official never "does" anything or votes against our position. Ask Jenny Robak, Curt Bromm and several others how it worked out for their political futures after they abandoned the pro-life position on aborted fetal tissue research and were no longer endorsed by NRL PAC in subsequent elections. Since you are not privy to the discussions we have had with elected officials while going through some legislative or administrative process, I don't know how you can conclude that we never hold anyone accountable. Read today's LJS article about the pro-life Regents being on the hot seat. Of course there are always lame ducks who go back on their word after they have had election help and when they no longer feel they have to be accountable. While acknowledging that they don't respond to constituent pressure, we can still publically out them for what they are and hope the folks that live near them never let them forget that they went back on their word. Yes, it's getting to the point that I think our PAC should seriously not endorse anyone other than incumbents who have proven their pro-life mettle with votes and actions. Then wait for the shrieks from sincere newbies who want to break into politics and have no record.

Brian T. Osborn said...

Anon 9:55,

That's what I've been doing for the past three years. But in a state like Nebraska, that is dominated by knee-jerk conservatism, I'd be remiss if I didn't pick on the majority. Sometimes that includes picking on my fellow Democrats and their propensity to support politicians, and policies, that are indistinguishable from the opposition.

Brian T. Osborn said...

The thing that gets me about "pro-lifers" is how many of them favor other policies that actually result in a greater body count. If you genuinely cared about the lives that you demonstrate so much concern for, you would want to ensure that not only are they born, but that their lives are worth living. But that might raise taxes!
Oh, the horror! Keeping all those kids alive, healthy, and educated will raise taxes! But damn you if you abort one, and no thanks, I don't want to adopt any!

Anonymous said...

I noticed once again that Julie skips over IVF. She never wants to touch that one. She knows if their group began to call for the ban of IVF they'd really lose big time. But you see, if you take the extreme positions that she does, that is the only logical thing to do. Oh, and Julie, your group does continue endorsing people who do absolutely nothing about the very issue you're focused on. You do it over and over again. When it comes to those Regents, until you start calling for the ban of IVF - the left overs are either tossed or the couple donates to research or rarely to snowflake adoptions - you're nothing but a bunch of hypocrits. Of course you never ever consider that using those embryos that are set for destruction anyway to instead do research that could result in saving the lives of millions of people who are actually already born and alive is far more prolife. But I guess you think once one is born, they should die from a horrible disease so that one set of cells is saved from being used to save that life. Yeah, that sure is prolife.

Anonymous said...

I always thought that women were free to govern their own bodies like say...men? Why don't the
"pro life" people see to it that the other part of the equation is addressed which would be the sperm donor and legislate their role in the process. Last time I checked it took two to tango.

Hey Julie, where for art thou?

Julie Schmit-Albin said...

Anons & BTO: Ever mindful of the fact that this is a political blog, I try to stick to that so as not to wear out my welcome. That said, National Right to Life has a policy position opposing creation of multiple numbers of embryos which results in the "left-over" embryo situation. Sorry if as one social reform movement we have to prioritize and can't cover every base you would like us to. Who knew in 1973 with the advent of Roe that we could come to where we are today; even discussing using "left-over" embryos for medical research and/or creating new embyros just to kill them. It seems a more convenient ploy to demand that the pro-life movement move into regulation of IVF clinics than discuss why science ought not to experiment on other members of the human family.

TO ALL:

As someone "in the know", Mark Fahleson did NOT dress his daughter as Jon Benet Ramsey for Halloween.

He has been known to refer to his little daughters, who like to do princess dress-up, as being like Jon Benet -- b/c of the "beauty queen" concept, not the dead child concept.

Frankly if you thought the latter, it may tell more about you, than him.

Carry on.

SS

Anonymous said...

I'm sorry, but I don't think it says anything bad about someone if they "thought the latter." Most rational people when they hear "Jon Benet" think of a murdered child who had been dressed up inappropriately as a beauty queen far too many times in her sad, young life.

I also have two young daughters who love to dress up and play princess, but I can't imagine EVER referring to them as Jon Benet. Ick.

Brian T. Osborn said...

Trish and I had a bevy of "princesses" and Miley Cyrus lookalikes that stopped by on Halloween and not even once did the thought of associating any of them with a murdered child cross my mind.

Thanks for the laugh, "Mrs. Smith". Your attempts at spinning that bovine fecal matter are hysterical. Fact is, Mark Fahleson is the Chair of the Republican Party. He uses his Twitter Account, which states who he is, to put out political messages to the masses that follow him. As a public figure, who makes public statements, he and those statements are open to scrutiny. He chose to use that same account to post a tweet where he calls one of his daughters "Jon Benet". He is now getting criticized for comparing one of his children, even suggesting they went out on Halloween dressed like a little girl that was horribly murdered and who's murder haunted this nation for years. It's completely disgusting and lacking in any real taste or tact. The fact you say that means people are going after his daughter indicates you have an inability to see reality. We're going after Fahleson. If he doesn't like being attacked for his dumb comments, he shouldn't comment, and maybe should consider getting rid of his twitter account. The nickname for his daughter is quite frankly none of your business, as would be the same for my son (if I had one). Nothing that should be of importance. Once again, focus on the issues, the real problems facing Americans. Let's talk about healthcare, national defense, immigration, the economy - things that affect the lives of Americans, NOT trivial, irrelevant-to-citizens information.

Brian T. Osborn said...

Mrs. Smith,

It is difficult to focus on the issues when the stench of the garbage is overwhelming. Maybe you should ask why it is that your heroes create so much of it for us to play in?

By the way, I found out about Fahleson's tweet on the Daily Kos, just like so many others did; so there you go for my end of the responsibility.

On to the important things. Other than a big "NO" to anything proposed by the Democrats, what exactly has your party been up to, other than creating garbage for us to play in?

Anonymous said...

Mrs. Smith, if you want to focus on the important issues so much, please tell your party leader to stop tweeting and facebooking in his official capacity on "trivial matters" such as this. He's a public figure now. If he doesn't want these things criticized -- DON'T PUT THEM OUT THERE. He can call his daughter Jon Benet all he wants -- in the privacy of his own home. Man, I feel sorry for his daughters if that is the case.

So tell us, Mrs. Smith, if it's none of our business, why did he post it on his NEGOP Tweet that goes out to everyone that follows it? You know, the one he uses to also post official NEGOP comments? Maybe you should direct your anger at him for being so stupid rather than at those who pointed out the stupidity of it. By continuing to defend him, you also keep the conversation going. Think about that.

As for what's "important", maybe the first place to start is to tell the Republicans your worship to stop lying (like Mike Johanns and Dave Heineman), stop obstructing without real solutions or alternatives (like Mikey and Davey), and start trying to work with those who may have differing ideas (like Nohanns and the Heiney).

Or maybe, RWP, it's pointing out how you and others are crying about how mean you think the Dems are being to your poor Chair, who opened mouth and inserted foot. Maybe it's you guys that are trying to shut down the oppositions statements by crying so much? Nice try. Got another excuse as to why Fahleson would call his daughter Jon Benet on this NEGOP Tweet account?

Funny what Ds will do when they have nothing going on.... said...

OMG - the point IS that he didn't dress his daughter up as Jon Benet!

defamation : communication to third parties of FALSE statements about a person that injure the reputation of or deter others from associating with that person

There will come a time when they will have messed with the wrong person. Of course, how else could they purport their agenda if it didn't involve lies and propoganda?!

With 12% of precincts reporting, McDonnell is creaming Deeds--McD is over 65%!

Now I know why the D's here want to talk about something else...

Anonymous said...

Funny.....so are you saying he calls his kids Cleopatra and Jon Benet all the time? It's not just coincidence that he'd do that on a Halloween tweet? What do you think about Fahleson calling his child that name?

And when you say the "wrong person", are you threatening people for criticizing your leader?

The Dems lost Virginia worse than they've ever lost Virginia. And New Jersey, where Obama spent the weekend campaigning (leaving our 65000 troops in Afghanistan to wait another week for reinforcements) went to Christie by a full four points. Looks like the magic is gone.

RWP - exit polls showed that 60% said their view on Obama had no affect on their view with 19% voting because they love him. They had about the same average of approval from those voters - about 60%. It's clear Corzine lost because they couldn't stand him. But I'm sure your paying attention to the solid NY 23rd, which for decades was Republican territory. But the extremists forced out the Republican for their teabagger, and he just conceded to the Democrat. Fascinating.

Oh, and your wrong that it's the worst loss in Virginia history. But nice try.

Exit polling also showed a big drop in voting from I's and first-time Obama voters. Bad news for D's in 2010.

Overall, a much better night for the Repubs.

If that's not the case, then we should be seeing D candidates riding the wave to jump right in to the race for Gov, LG, AG, Treas and Auditor...

Right Wing Professor said...

What people say to pollsters, particularly when there's a sensitive issue like race involved, and what they actually do, are often two different things. Obama's weekend campaigning for Corzine coincided with a drop in the polls for Corzine. I put more stock in that than expressed opinions.

Frankly, given Scozzafava's love for card check and other liberal leanings, I think conservatives are better off with a Democrat who knows that he needs to be the bluest of blue dogs to be reelected in 2010. And even then, he's going to be very vulnerable. Meanwhile, the GOP was taught a valuable lesson. The NRCC blew a million bucks on this race.

By the way, McDonald got 58.7% of the vote. Previous to that, the highest GOP vote percentage in the last 50 years was George Allen in 1993, who got 58.3%. And prior to 1960, Virginia wasn't votin' for no damn Republicans.

Corzine's sleaze ads--bringing up Christie's weight--hopefully played a good role in his defeat.

I visited the state Republican parties for the other 49 states and I've found that negop.org is the most slanderous and derogatory of them all. The "Report Tom White Hotline" sets a new standard of low even for the Republican party. It is a disgrace to all Nebraskans, not just Republicans.

Anonymous said...

Gee Phil. I totally believe that you spent the time to go to forty-nine Republican web pages.

Do tell the slander and derogatory-ness on the NEGOP pages too!

Please. Details.
We're waiting.

Hey Phil--why don't you go to the 49 state Democratic party web pages and see how they recruit candidates ... then write a report for Covalt, Rogers and Samp so they can learn how to do it too!

Phil Montag said...

You show me another state party, Democrat or Republican, who proudly displays a hotline to find the most personal dirt on a cadidate or their family. White's entire legislative history is public record, it's obvious that they're not interested in researching his public service but are looking for baseless personal accusations. I showed negop.org to my Republican friend in Illinois and he was shocked. "Report Tom White Hotline" is an all new low in Nebraska politics.

Anonymous said...

I'll one up you:
Show us where, "the most personal dirt on a cadidate or their family" is requested.

(Then again, since that is the standard Democrat m.o., I can see where you'd be confused...)

You're an idiot. negop.org has a "Report Tom White Hotline." There is no other state that has such a slanderous front page of their website.

Street Sweeper said...

We must have a different understanding of the word "slanderous".

Hey Phil--

Do any Dem party web sites ask people to email them stuff on Republican congressman? That's what NDP did re: Terry.

End of the week is coming--will 10.2% unemployment help you guys recruit candidates in NE?

What's up with White? said...

Phil: Where does the NEGOP ask for dirt on Tom's personal life? I bet it DOES ask for dirt on his FEC report.... like.... oh wait, he only spent $10,000 in the 3rd qtr of 2009? Now that seems a little strange since Mr Russell has been workin his taily off and White has been fundraising like a madman. And we all know that fundraising costs money. Only spend $10,000 in 3 months....hmmm.... maybe you're just afraid Mr. White has something to hide. Can't imagine what.

What's up with White? said...

and Phil: what about your recent cronies Fleming Kleeb and Daily Kos's recent lies about Fahleson? I bet you don't think defamation is slanderous, do you?

Phil Montag said...

I'm not really concerned about what Fahleson drunk-tweets, what people should worry about is the content of negop.org, that is what is truly disturbing.

Right now the GOP is experiencing a rift between 2 groups moving away from each other. The first is the teabaggers, the second are decent Americans that just don't believe in unnecessary government. It wasn't teabaggers that won the Governor's races in NJ and VA, it was 2 candidates running as moderates appealing to sensible voters. One look at negop.org and you can see that the Nebraska Republican Party has been hijacked by teabaggers.

Talk about canididate recruitment, I think it's funny that no serious challengers have stepped up to take on any of the State Senators in Lancaster County. Avery, Conrad, Mcgill, and Wallman will sail to re-election.

Gallup says...

Generic congressional ballot today:

Repub 48
Dem 44

Bye, Tom W. Hello GOP House majority...

Hey Phil--the week's wrapping up tomorrow--you clowns find a candidate for Gov, LT Gov, AG, Treas or Auditor yet?
