The flag patch is symbolic of the men who used to march into battle with an actual flag. They would march steady and strong, and as a result the flag would blow behind them. On the arms of our soldiers, the flag faces as if being carried into battle, blowing behind them.

I've often wondered why we see the back of the flag on the arm patch? Why not with the stars and field of blue on the left?
